NEWARK: Florence G. Oprea passed on to her eternal rest on Wednesday, November 10, 2010 at the Autumn Healthcare Centre, Newark, Ohio (Licking County).

She was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on October 7, 1910.
As an infant, she was taken to live with her grandparents in Secocis, Romania.
At age 12, she returned to live with her family in Erie, Pennsylvania, where she became the caretaker of five siblings.
When she was 17, she married John Oprea from Romania and settled in Akron, Ohio, where he was employed at the Firestone Tire and Rubber Company for 42 years. They had two children, John Oprea, Jr. and Anna Eleanor.

Florence loved attending the Romanian Baptist Church where she was very active for many years.

When her husband died in 1975, she moved to Florida where she lived until 2009.

In July of 2009, her daughter, Eleanor, brought her to Newark, Ohio to live at Autumn Healthcare Center. Florence's greatest joy through the years was to watch her children and grandchildren achieve "The American Dream."

On October 9, a 100th birthday celebration was held at Autumn Healthcare Center to honor Florence.
She was surrounded by family and friends who came to celebrate her life. She determined long ago that she would make every effort to reach 100 years! She received a lovely certificate from President and Mrs. Obama and a letter of congratulations from Willard Scott.

Florence is survived by her daughter, Eleanor "Ellie" Unger of Newark, Ohio; grandsons, Rick (Karin), Todd (Celia) and Brian; two great-granddaughters, India Eleanor and Evangeline "Petal"; and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Lena and Steven Gaspar; husband, John Oprea; son, John, Jr.; brothers, Walter, Moses, Frank and Louis; her sister, Viola; and son-in-law, Rich Unger.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Central Ohio, PO Box 430, Newark, OH 43058, The Dawes Arboretum, 7770 Jacksontown Road SE, Newark, OH 43055

Ellie will greet friends at the Reddington Village Clubhouse, Taylor Lane, Newark, Ohio on Sunday, November 14, from 4-6 p.m.
