Not sure if this is the same person . I have a brick wall on my Great Grandfather . James Smith b 1825 d 1852 Gallatin Kentucky . He married Nancy McCoy and they had 3 children Sinia Smith , Zerilda Smith and my Great Grandfather James William Smith . i don't know if James had siblings or who his parents were. I have a couple of other relatives who are running into the brick wall with him as well. Nancy did remarry a Daniel Brown later in the same year that James died (1852) THey had 2 or 3 children as well. Funny thing also is 1860 census only shows children Nancy and Daniel had nothing on children Nancy and James had. My great grandfather James William SMith was not old enough to be on his own nor were his sisters. So it is a mystery why they can't be accounted for. Now I know my Great Grandfather James W. married Mary Catherine Day and they had 8 children one my grandfather Delno Emery Smith.

Re: Gassaways of Indiana, Illinois, Ohio and Virginia

I just discovered that I have a Ross County, Ohio Gassoway ancestor. Louisa Gassaway, born 1831, married to John W. Clymer in 1848 in the Ross Co. marriage records (which is how I found out about the Gassaway connection) is my gg grandmother. I've been buried under the bulk of material, trying to sort out the various families, and just saw your post from 6 years ago. If you are still reading this board and still interested in Gassaway genealogy, please email me at hgreely@stanford.edu.

Re: Gassaway, Tennessee photos

In The History of Cannon County:

WHEN GASSAWAY WAS YOUNG
Those settling along the valley in and around the present site of Gassaway were: Benjamin Gassaway, for whom the village was named. He was the father of James R. Gassaway, a Mexican War soldier and father of Hiram Gassaway, a progressive farmer of that neighborhood and for many years a member of the County Court. Benjamin was also the father of Charley Gassaway, the first merchant of the village of Gassaway. George Washington Grizzle, Daniel Grizzle, Ira Hollandsworth, Bill Powell, Clavin Smithson, a Mexican solder, John Jetton, grandfather of Bill Jetton and great grandfather of Sheelah Jetton, Madison Wilcher, Jesse McGee, Fountain Owen, Hugh Morris, Hiram Hale, John Melton, father of Luke and Joe; Arch Markum, Sam George, Henry Campbell, Newton Powell, Sutton Tassey, Ben Bullard (who lived to be 106 years old), Thomas POwell, Alexander Higgan, Sr., Jasper Bogle, (first Constable of that district), James Dodd, (the first Juror).

I am directly descended from Daniel Grizzle who supposedly settled in that area at the same time as Benjamin Gassaway. My understanding is that they came from North Carolina by way of Kentucky. I believe they were from the Nash County, NC area.

Rebecca was born 20 June 1812 or 13 in Kentucky. Here parents were Richard Gassaway and Catherine ?. Rebecca married Newton McManis on 26 June 1838. In 1850 she and Newton and Catherine Gassaway were living in Carroll Co. KY. Before 1880 Rebecca and Newton moved to Sumner Co. Kansas. Rebecca died there 29 Dec. 1884. Newton died in Sumner Co. KS 22 Jan. 1884.
I found a long list of Gassaway ancestors when I listed Newton's information at the LDS site familysearch.org. There is an ancestral file and the submitter's name. His information takes the Gassaways back to London in the 1600s. I have no documentation for anything other than Rebecca and Newton's dates.

Does anyone know the names of the parents of this Catherine "Kitty" Greenwood, or when she died?
John Gassaway born 1768 in Maryland, died 1826 in Shelby Co., KY, married Catherine "Kitty" Greenwood in Shelby Co., KY in 1805. On the 1850 census the widowed Catharine Gasway (incorrectly spelled) is living with the family of her daughter Rebecca and son-in-law Newton McMannis. Catharine was 67 then and listed as having been born in Virginia.
I have a Catherine Greenwood, born 1782 in Berkeley Co., Virginia (now West Virginia), whose father was in the Shelby Co., KY area by 1795 when he was on a tax list for land around Drennon Lick. He later moved to Indiana, first Monroe Co., and then Owen Co., where he died in 1842.
That Greenwood line is German, originally Grunewald, and lived in the part of Frederick Co., MD, that later became Carroll Co., MD.

I don't have Mary, but I have Erastus B. b May 29, 1849, Charles b. Aug. 29, 1851, Clara Ann b. Oct. 18, 1853. I don't have birthplaces, yet on these people. I also have an Unknown Gassaway who married Lucretia Leonard Barnett b, in Ohio June 7, 1830. I am unsure if the "Leonard" is a name given at birth or if she had a previous marriage. Still searching for that fact. I suspect it is a previous marriage. Do any of these names ring a bell?

Jennifer KIRK Jones

Geisweid-Geiseway-Gassaway?

(also same posted at board "Gasaway")
For a long time I believed Gassway was an English (language) corruption of the German name Geisweid - there are areas in the Siegerland (east of Koeln, north of Siegen) where my family was corrupted to Geiswey for centuries. In the Netherlands, abt. the 1730's the spelling Geiseweyt is known. And then it is a small step to Gasaway.

What I found in overseas records:
a. Isaiah Casaway was listed in the assessment list of Bethel Twp., Lancaster Co., PA, in 1751. He is probably identical with Isaiah Guschweyd, in Williamsburg (= now Jonestown) 1740.
b. Patrick Caseway and Mary Craig had a child Jean bapt. in Albany, NY, 30 JAN 1757, witnesses: John Graham, William Hanna, Mary Chase, Matty Grain AL). This was the only time that this name was found in the area 1683-1809.

Leo Gijswijt, Postbus 25056, 3001 HB Rotterdam, Netherlands
I have a family Bible for Julia Lott Brewer. She was the daughter of Robert and Nancy J. Lott. The family was from Ross County, Ohio. Julia Lott married James Brewer (listed on the same page in the census of 1880) Jan 1, 1885. Julie was still living in Scioto County on Eastern Ave. in 1930. Information in the Bible details Julia and James' family. The Bible and the Brewer family do not connect to my tree. I would like to get the Bible to a family member of Julia or James. Contact me direct if you are interested.

I have a William Gassaway "lost " in Arkansas. But it seems to me that every third male Gassaway was named William. But let me start at the begining. The Father was named William W. Gassaway, b abt 1802 in Pickens South Carolina. He married Cosby Curtis and they had three children, one named William D., before Cosby died. He then married Ludina Jane McWhorter and they had Six sons and five daughters, born in S.C. and in Blount County,Alabama. One of those sons they also named William, b. about 1856 in Alabama. William W. and his second family as well as a daughter Elizabeth, from the first family were living in Blount County, Alabama in 1860. Before the 1870 census both families had moved to Arkansas. Elizabeth had married Thomas Alexander Nix in Pickens, South Carolina before moving West, that is my interest in the Gassaway family. The Nix branch ended up in Conway County, Arkansas. The Gassaways in several other counties in the NW quarter of the state. The second son William could be a candidate for your William but he would have been in his late teens when he married if we all have our dates correct. If any of this fits contact me and we will explore the details.

Elizabeth Gassaway,

Can anyone identify the Elizabeth Gassaway that I have found in the 1880 Pickens County, Alabama Census?
-----------------------------------------------------------
You are here: Search > Census > U.S. Census > 1880 United States Federal Census > Alabama > Pickens > Other Townships > District 102, image 30? of 44., Residence 87, family 87,

Gassaway, Elizabeth,W, F, 48 Tenant,
, Al***,(maybe Alice), W, F, 19, daughter, Tenant,
, Hennetia?, (faint and poor handwriting), 17, daughter, Tenant.
------------------------------------------------------------
This section of West Centeral Alabama was rich Cotton plantations prior to the War, but I am not sure about living conditions as a tenant, widow with two teen age daughters after the war.

The Elizabeth Gassaway that I am looking for married Thomas Alexander Nix in Pickens, South Carolina 24 May 1849. Her parents were William W. Gassaway and Cosby Curtis. Cosby died and William Married a second time. Between 1849 and 1852 the second Gassaway family and several Nix families moved to Blount County, Alabama. I lost contact with both families after the 1860 census, but found them in Arkansas in 1870. William Alexander Nix died in the war, leaving Elizabeth as a widow, with three sons that I know of. I know nothing about the two daughters. This Elizabeth's age matches my records, the birth place of her parents matches, and it is possible that the two daughters could have been born after I lost contact and prior the death of her husband. It is also very possible that the plantation owner was a family accquatiance because many of them moved from South Carolina. They even named the new county, Pickens Alabama. BUT I HAVE NO PROOF. Does any one know her to be some other Elizabeth Gassaway?
