Nathaniel Griffes Gates, b. 1820, NY

Nathaniel Griffes Gates married Susan E. Quackenbush and had children John A. and Hannah Gates. Nathaniel went by the name Griffes Gates until around 1840, at which time he was known as either Nathaniel G. or N.G. Gates.

Susan died in 1858 (Schenectady) and Nathaniel married Miss Harriet Parks. We don't know what happened to her, but by 1864, Nathaniel was living in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and married Harriet P. Sawyer.

Nathaniel's parents are Stephen & Johanna Gates. No maiden name. Johanna died in Schenectady, NY in 1850.

Does anyone have information on Nathaniel's parents? We think his mother was also known as Hannah (Lewis) Gates, but we cannot absolutely make the connection since we do not know her maiden name.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I am looking for information on Nathan (Nathaniel) Gates of East Haddam, CT. He was born in about 1770-1780 according to censuses. His wife was Mary Andrews.

They had a daughter named Charlotte Gates, who was born in Hartland, Hartford, CT. Charlotte married Isaac Doty.

I do know that Nathan's family later moved to Candor, Tioga, NY because he was listed in the censuses as later living there. He started off in East Haddam CT; went to Hartland, CT; and then Candor, NY.

Does anyone have a Nathan Gates similar to this one on there family tree? Any information on him or his parents would be greatly appreciated.

New Free Supplement to “Gates Families of America” books

Reference: “Records of the Gates Families of America from the Colonial Period to 1860”, Third Edition, Volumes I and II, published in 2000 by Robert Cady Gates.

I have recently completed a new edition of the supplement to this book which contains many new records that were not included in the previous supplement. During the past year I filed all new Gates family information which I received, and within the past several weeks, I have added this information to the earlier supplement. Those who received the earlier supplement may discard it as all of those records are either repeated or updated in the new edition.

I would be very pleased to send the new supplement via e-mail attachment, at no charge, to those who may be interested. The supplement may either be kept on file on your computer or printed and kept with the books.

If you are interested please contact me at robert.gates@verizon.net.
June 23, 1902 age 73 yrs 9 mos. 29 days farmer
dob August 24, 1828 pob NY
father's name : Oldham Gates b. NY
mother's name : Mehitable Hatfield b.
Hi I'm looking for any information regarding the Gates family in Australia. So far, I only know back to my great-great grandfather, Walter Charles Gates, b.20 Dec 1857 in Lancashire, England, d. 21 June 1937 New South Wales, Australia. He married a woman with the distinctive name of Peri-Merion (maybe Marion) Wallace. She was born in Quirindi, New South Wales.
Anything, however remote, would be appreciated.

Leonard Gates, Wilna, Jefferson Co, NY 1825-35

I am looking for any information regarding Leonard Gates who is in the NY state census for 1825 and 1835 in Wilna, Jefferson Co, NY. I believe there may be a connection between Leonard Gates and my 2nd great grandfather Nelson Gates Smith who was born nearby (possibly Watertown) c. 1816. Nelson Gates Smith named one of his sons Leonard Gates Smith, and I believe he also had a brother named Leonard. Nelson migrated to Chicago where he married in 1841, then Wisconsin in 1846, Minnesota in 1862, Iowa between 1870 and 1880

We will meet and eat at 1:00 at the Beech Shelter in Johnson County Park (old Camp Atterbury near Edinburgh, Indiana). There is a playground nearby for the children.

Hope all of you Gates descendents can join us.
Jeremiah Gates of Brooklyn Twp., Cuyahoga, Ohio +Thomas family

I am looking for a possible link between my family and the family of Jeremiah Gates or his wife Phoebe Deming, pioneers of Brooklyn Twp., Cuyahoga Co., Ohio (c.1816). 1860 census has my ancestors Albert Wyst (a recent dutch immigrant) and his wife Emilie (Charity Amelia Thomas) living with Jeremiah and Phoebe. Boarders were common in those times, true, but I don't think it an accident that the young couple ended up in Brooklyn. Albert Wyst/Vanderwyst would have barely been able to speak English, being in the country for less than a decade, but from a mere laborer in 1860, newly settled in the area (we have them in Pennsylvania in 1859), he somehow acquired the skilled trade of cooper in mid life and built up a considerable business in the Cleveland area, and still at Phoebe's death twenty years later they were living next door. This smacks of the support of an extended family network.
So I am looking for a marriage link between the Thomas family of Connecticut/New York/Pennsylvania and the Gates/Deming family prior to 1860. Charity's parents were Jairus Thomas (born Connecticut) and Cynthia A. Thomas (maiden name unknown, born New York, parents from Connecticut). Gilbert Thomas, Andrew Thomas and Henry Thomas were brothers/sons/cousins. Does anyone out there have any evidence that can support my theory of the Gates - Thomas connection?

Alex

My Gates line is progressing, but definately spanning out in Michigan. Because I don't have all the children named yet for the grandparent of my Adelbert Merril, I feel that there may be a connection or two out in the above Michigan counties that has not been able to trace from Michigan to NY.

My line, Adelbert Merril was born in Winfield, Herkimer,NY, his father, Robert was also born in Herkimer, NY. Robert's father, Elisha, was born in Preston, CT. Elisha had 8 children, possible 9, and I only have 4 verified with names. Elisha owned land in many counties in NY, including Herkimer, Montgomery, Onondaga, Oswego, Jefferson, and possibly Otsego.

If you think we might have a connection that far back, please let me know.

My line primarily stayed in Kent Co (Adelbert), but his children spread to St. Clair, Barry and Kalamazoo Counties. Grandchildren were in Allegan, Barry, Kalamazoo, Kent and St Clair. (Also still one son who disappeared out of state).

I have been given a number of old photographs with the challenge of identifying the people. I received them from a woman living in Fulton, South Dakota. These photos were all mixed together and could be from a number of families. The GATES line includes Zebedee born in Ohio in 1832 and married Elizabeth Glenn in Jones County Iowa in 1855. The couple had eight children, Joseph William (which would be the line of the photos), Margaret (Millard Thomas), Lydia (Fred Cole), Zebby Ann (Charles Munsinger), Mary Jane, Otis Wright, George Wilsey and Charles Oline.

Following several years in Iowa the family relocated to Smith County Kansas. Zebedee and Elizabeth later moved to Warrensburg, Missouri with the younger children. Zebedee died there in 1904. Elizabeth later relocated to Smith County Kansas where she died in 1916.

Any help on this family or photos would be appreciated.

Hi everyone,

I am trying to clarify the parentage of one Clarissa Gates, wife of Benjamin Shepard. In Gerald Faulkner Shepard's book, it is stated that she was the daughter of Isaac Gates and his wife, Priscilla Bundy. Unfortunately, she couldn't have been the daughter of Priscilla. Isaac was married twice, and this could account for the mistaken parentage. I am having trouble locating Isaac and am trying to see if he left a will that would clear up the problem. Does anyone have any information on this family, such as Isaac's location/approximate death date? I know he was in Ontario, Wayne County, New York.

Kate

Obit: Philetus W. Gates

THE OBITUARY RECORD
Chicago Daily Tribune (1872-1963); Dec. 4, 1888; ProQuest Historical Newspapers Chicago Tribune (1849-1986), pg. 5

The funeral of Philetus W. Gates will be held at 10 o’clock Wednesday morning at the Church of the Redeemer, Warren avenue and Robey street.

(Mr. Gates was born at Fener, Madison County, N. Y., Feb. 25, 1817, and learned the blacksmith trade. He came to Cook County in 1838, and took a contract to furnish ironwork for the Illinois & Michigan Canal. Finding the old process for cutting threads on bolts too slow he invented his celebrated screw-cutting die, which is now in universal use. This gave him his first start. In 1837 he was seemingly swamped, yet in a few years he had paid every dollar of his large indebtedness. He was always the essence of integrity. He inaugurated a plan in his workshops by which all his men could take stock in the concern. Many of the large number of men took advantage of the offer and put their earnings into stock, thus saving from $300 to $5,000. This stock for five years paid 20 per cent dividends; on the sixth year 60 per cent stock dividend and 10 per cent cash on the increased stock. Many of the lending foundrymen and machinists of this city got their first start from the money saved at that time. Mr. Gates’ brain was never idle. He had taken out about sixty patents, most of which are useful improvements. He was the first to send grist and saw mills to the then wild West. He was philanthropic in his nature, and always ready to help the needy. When it was worth something to the colored men to find a friend Mr. Gates never turned a cold shoulder to them, but hired them constantly, against the protests of his friends. For many years his head foreman in the pattern shop was a colored man. Mr. Gates died in the harness. He greatly desired to finish a new pulverizer. He had the drawings laid on his bed and worked on them constantly during his illness, but before he could finish his work he was called away.)

Note: Fenner is correct spelling. Wife is Abigail Emma Scoville
Robert Cady Gates books available online

If things have been slow this winter in your Gates line research, this might liven it up a bit.

If you have had an opportunity to use the Robert Cady Gates genealogy series on Gates family research, you know how valuable they can be.

Recently we have been in communication with Mr. Gates. So, here is the good news, he has been wanting to widen the distribution of his books, however, with over 1300 pages in three volumes, reprints have become too costly. Thus, we have teamed up with Robert and made them available on the Internet. Just go to our web site.

http://www.ourfamilyancestry.info

Click on "Histories" and you will find his three books listed along with updated information on the Stephen Gates's ancestors section of the 1898 book "Stephen Gates And His Descendants".

Many books on the internet are shown in such a way that they are hard to use without having to read the whole thing. We have done these in Adobe Acrobat .pdf files that you download. You can read them, search them, and print a copy for your own bookshelf if you wish. Books 1 and 3 are large so if you have a slow connection, expect it to take some time. However, it is worth the wait.

If you have any problems with it, let us know.
My James Gates b. 13 Mar 1790 Chesterfield,Va was supposedly raised as an orphan, ran away to KY, married Margaret McMichael and settled in Clermont,OH. He named his first daughter Sarah Bass Angelina Gates. There was a marriage in Chesterfield,Va of a James Gates and Sarah Bass. Logic tells me that my James Gates could be from this union, but I have not been able to find any more information.

Ancestry of George Gates b. 1634

I am wondering if there is any new information on George's ancestry beyond what Robert Cady Gates came up with in his 2002 book, "George Gates of E. Haddam, CT…" Robert states, "While an authentic ancestry of George Gates has not been found, it is known that families with the surname Gates were prevalent in Essex County, England, with a rather large concentration in Chelmsford."

I know there is speculation and guesswork, but I am looking for an authenticated place of birth and ancestry in England. Has anyone come up with anything?

Larry Bell

Rebecca Wartman (Wartmen) Gates

Rev. Edward Josiah "Eddie" Gates, Methodist minister in the Hillsborough and Manatee Counties was a brother to my great grandfather Dr Hubbard Gates. My cousin recently sent me his obituary. It stated his first wife Rebecca Wartman died after a very short time after they where married. I did not know about her and am not able to locate her on line. Does anyone know of this union or can find their marriage certificate and or her death certificate around 1900 or 1901 in either Hillsborough or Manatee Counties. He married two other women after this marriage and Fannie Hays Gates and Rev Gates are buried in Manasota Memorial Cemetery. I could not find a grave for his third wife, Ettie Haskell Gates. She may have been buried in Hillsborough County. If anyone has any links to her and her children or know where she is buried I would appreciate the help! Thanks!!

Is there someone out there doing Gates research who has any information on Simon Gates (b. 1770-1775 d. 1826-1829)? He is my 3rd great grandfather. My theory is that both Catherine Moulton Munger and Simon lost their spouses in Clark Co, OH and they then married there on 8 Feb 1820. (Have not located his first wife's name nor a grave site yet). Both had children and as far as I know they had only one son, Merrill Gates, born in 1821. Catherine and three of her Munger children and Merrill emigrated to Kosciusko Co.,IN after Simon's death around 1826-1829 in Union County, OH.

Would deeply appreciate any help that can be provided and will share any information I might have gathered over the years.

Sarah Sally Gates married Daniel Lillard in Mercer Co Ky in 1801. Daniel Lillard died Mercer Co. Ky about 1810/1811 I am searching for the family after his death. I believe she remarried to James Cloyd but have not been able to find the information. I find their daughter Elizabeth (Betsey) Lillard being married to Chesley G. Dickerson 19 Jan 1826 in Campbell Co. Ky consent by Stepfather James Cloyd. Witnessed by Sally Cloyd. Chesley and Betsy are in Sangamon, Co. Illinois in 1830 and 1840 census. She dies abt 1846 in Sangamon Illinois. Sarah also has a son Daniel Lillard (my GG grandfather) born about 1810 who marries Sarah Stone in Johnson Co. Illinois in 1847. I found a pedgriee on Sarah which shows death date of 1843 Kenton Co Missouri, but I believe it to be Ky as there is no Kenton Co Mo. Any information on the marriage date and location to James Cloyd and death information on Sarah Sally (Gates, Lillard) Cloyd would be appreciated!
I also would be very interested to determine who her parents are??

Don Wilson

dfmkwilson@yahoo.com
I am trying to locate information on the following families. I believe the Gates family is originally from Buffalo, NY or Painesville, OH areas. Specifically I'm trying to locate information on Justin and his brother James Gates who migrated to San Francisco sometime during the Gold Rush era. Or it was possibly even their parents or other relative who migrated. I'm not sure. Would like any information regarding my g-grandmother. Her was named Bertha G. Ferrar (Farrar/Farrer). I know that she was born in Kentucky 1874. Her father's name was Ferrar, first name unknown and her mother was a Gilmore from Bangor Maine. Also trying to locate information on the Fassett and Hedden families from San Francisco and Alameda. All information I have regarding these families is sketchy at best. Thank you for any help that maybe offered.

I have an original carte de visite photograph of “Harriet Bigelow Gates Goodwill”, which I’d like to get back to descendants or family members. Photo was taken in about 1870, in Fitchburg (Worcester Co.) MA.

I found Harriet in the 1870 census for Petersham (Worcester Co.), as wife of Samuel Harrison Gates (verified by OWT for son Gilbert Harrison Gates, her son), who lived with them, age 3. Harriet was age 34. In 1880 census, Harriet was age 44, living with son Gilbert H., age 14 in Barre (Worcester Co.). By 1900, she was Hattie G. Goodwill, living in Worcester, wife of Edgar B. Goodwill. I also have two photos of Gilbert Harrison Gates, taken 1885 and 1888.

Get back to me at margerice@prodigy.net if you are related to Harriet Bigelow Gates Goodwill.
