I found a picture of my g.grandfather Johnny Jackson Steward "Pappy" born 1877 and my g.grandmother Sarah Savanna Jones Steward "Granny" on a search, found in 'The Gates Family Tree". It shocked me because I have this same photo. My grandfather was Walker Jackson Steward,pne of their sons. I was at "Pappy"'s funeral in a small country church in Maury County,TN est. 1961. Would you please give me any information that you have on him? I don't know his parents names.

Elaine...my Gates tree goes back to East Haddam. I'm descended from Daniel Gates (b. 13 Mar 1777) and whose father was Daniel Gates (b. 24 Sept 1738). My 1777 Daniel moved to the Erie NY area in the early 1800s and fathered Justus B. Gates and Ira Gates around 1808/9. The problem that I have is that "no where" can I find who/where his wife is. I'm kind of a novice at this, but I have most of the information from Justus on down to the present in a Family Tree Maker file. The big blank that I have is not knowing who is the mother of Justus and Ira (and of course, the wife of Daniel). Any suggestions? Richard Gates (richard_gates@sbcglobal.net)

Jack and Lucy Gates

I am looking for any information on Lucy(Davis) and Jack Gates. They may have resided in Louisana and Texas. They are my ggg grandparents. The only information I have is that Lucy's maiden name was Davis and she had a brother named Jess or Jesse Davis.

Jack and Lucy Gates had a dauther named Lucinda or Lucindy Gates. I am not sure if there were other children. Lucinda or Lucindy Gates married Frank Young. It clear that they lived in greenwood Lousiana in 1894. They had two son's that I am postive of Frank Young Jr born in 1894 and David Young born in 1897 whom was my grandfather.

This is an african american family. I am looking for any information on Jack and Lucy. IF there were other siblings etc.

I did check Robert Cady Gates' work and he has Clarissa as a daughter of Isaac Gates and Priscilla Bundy. I think it is more likely that she was a daughter of Isaac's 2nd wife Prudence French.

Clarissa: I have my Gates line documented back to
Stephen Gates who left Hingham, England in 1638 and
6 weeks later landed in Hingham, Massachusett. I have mosty the direct lineage and not to muchof the lateral lines but if I can help would be happy to do so. If you haven't contacted
Robert Gates and looked at his two volumes on "The Gates Families in America from the Colonial Period forward" I woul do so for he has thousands of Gstes's and their parentage.

Thanks for getting back to me and keep me in mind if you ever find Isaac's will--I would be curious about the names mentioned.

I have requested the DAR papers for Samuel Gates. Their records seem to merge the two Samuel Gates who were in NY state in the early 19th century. The papers list his death as 1813 in Perry NY but that may have been the Samuel who married Nancy Bertholf. The descendants listed by the DAR are 2 from Otego NY. I hope that when I get them, it will help give me a clue.

I actually haven't gotten Isaac's will yet-I put the Gates line on the back burner for a little while to work on other things. I haven't been able to find anything definite to substantiate Clarissa's placement in the family; the only source I saw that listed it was "The Shepard Families of New England." I looked for Samuel Gates, and other than the cemetery transcription, I haven't encountered him. There's an indication that he was a Revolutionary War veteran-may that avenue could yield some results?

A Charles S. Gates b. Ohio was living in Harrison, Jewell , Kansas in the 1880 census. He married a Ellen Tindall b. 3 Jan 1863 and died 6 Feb 1916. She was from England. Charles had a brother Samuel Gates b. 1855 also know as Bailey Gates.

There is a Claude Gates b. April 1887 in the 1900 census of Sheridan, Kansas.
His parents were Charles S. Gates b. Ohio and an Ellen born in England.

Charles may have had a brother Elmer Ellsworth Gates that was called Jesse E. Gates in his younger days.

Have you found anything on Isaac's will or proof of Clarissa's parentage? I am trying to track a Samuel Gates who was in Otego in 1811 and is buried in the Gates cemetery there, died in 1828 at age 75 along with his wife Sarah.

I am trying to figure out if he is related to Clarissa Gates who married Benjamin Shepherd or to Isaac Gates, who was married to Priscilla Bundy, Benjamin Shepherd's aunt.

He came to Walsh County at age 17 years. he married Mary BRUCE, the daughter of Alexander and Flora Gillespie Bruce, Dec 15, 1897. Both Mr and Mrs Gates were members of the Presbyterian Church. Mr Gates was a Mason and she was an Eastern Star and Rebekah Lodge. They had two children:

Florence Gates married M. O. Johnson

They lived on a farm for the first 3 years after marrying and lived in park River the rest of their lives. There are two grandsons: Rossford Johnson and Clayton Gates.

Miss Ella Gates' farm in LaFargeville, NY

Any know where the old "Locust Hill Farm" on RD2 in La Fargeville, NY (Jefferson county) is/was? My great, great aunt Miss Ella Gates owned it at one time. She is listed in the 1918 Farm directory as owning 73 acres there. Just wondering if there are any bldgs still standing there or if anyone has an photos of it then and/or now.

Ray Norval Gates married my mother in 1962 in CA. This was his second marriage (?). My sister was born of this union in CA.

WEST LIBERTY, Iowa -- L. Claire Gates, 71, rural West Liberty, died Monday, June 14, 2004, at Mercy Hospital, Iowa City.

Memorial service at Barker Funeral Home, West Branch. The Rev. Scot Patrick will officiate.

Mr. Gates was born May 1, 1933, in Iowa City, the son of Ivan N. and Frieda Rehwoldt Gates.

He graduated from West Branch High School in 1951 and later attended Iowa State University where he was a member of the Alpha Gamma Rho fraternity. He then went on to work with his father in the dairy business at Shadyrest Jerseys Farm. He showed cattle for a number of years and had a national champion bull and cow during that period.

He was a member of the Iowa Jersey Cattle Club and the American Jersey Cattle Association and was active in the dairy shows at the Muscatine County Fair. He was an avid fan of NASCAR and the St. Louis Cardinals.

Survivors include two brothers, Gale Gates of Davenport and Ferral Gates of West Branch; a sister, Oneth Gates Lovetinsky of Kalona; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Visitation at the Henderson-Barker Funeral Home, West Branch.

Mrs. Gates was born July 18, 1936, in Iowa City, the daughter of Howard and Gladys Thompson Madsen. She married Gale Gates on Feb. 20, 1955.

She graduated from West Branch High School in 1954.

She had been the administrator for the Cookson Home, West Branch, for many years.

She was a member of the West Branch United Methodist Church and Centerdale Coffee Club.

She loved being involved with her children and grandchildren.

Survivors include three daughters, Scherie Gates, Linda Stoolman and husband, Kevin, and Cindy Kusick and husband, Mike, all of West Branch; a son, Dean Gates and wife, Mary, of Atalissa; two brothers, Sonny Madsen and wife, Ann, and Tom Madsen, all of Iowa City; two sisters, Jeanette Cummins of Iowa City and Elaine Ovson of Lake Wood, Colo.; and 10 grandchildren, Luke Jeffries and wife, Alison, Jacquie Jeffries, Curt Jeffries, Patrick Gates, Howie Gates, Katie Dauber and husband, Ryan, Rachel Stoolman, Becca Stoolman, Allison Kusick and Jessica Kusick.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a grandson, Chad Gates.

Hello. Mary Gray, granddaughter of Mary (Chilton) Winslow of the Mayflower, daughter of Mary (Winslow) Gray, never married/had issue (per Mayflower Society). Other reports note Thomas Hungerford married a Mary Graves (some assert Mary Green). Reporting of Mary Gray being married to Thomas Hungerford is a widespread error.

You don't give a time period or location. It appears that your Sara Gates and Charles Daily may be listed in Robert Gates' books. I found what may be them in Ohio. Be sure and check the listed references. You should be able to find the reference books mentioned using a Google search. If they are your family, you should get back a couple more generations.
