Nancy Gatewood born c.1760 d.1786 married William Taylor of Fredericksburg in 1783. William b.1759 d.1809. Does anyone know the identity of Nancy's parents? Could they have been John Gatewood born c.1735 d.1814/1815 and his wife Betty? John and Betty were also the parents of Dudley Gatewood who married Temperance Worsham. Thanks. - Anne

Cecil Maxey Gatewood was my uncle.He was born February 07, 1905 His parents were John Calvin Gatewood b& Ella Margaret Coleman Gatewood.
Cecil disappeared and I do not have a death date or place.
When I last saw him I was a lad of about eight years old. I never
knew his family. Very disappointing to me. I wasraised by his mother for several years and he
visited us infrequently.

Our line runs back to John & Amy Gatewood.

Growing up my father was often invited to the DeWitt Family reunions. Also, my siblings and I were frequently told of our relative Charles Gatewood and how he was cheated out of the credit due him. My father's name is Ted Gatewood. I have been told that his father was John Gatewood. Further, my dad told me that his mother was a Dewitt. I know of four of his siblings. Any possibility of helping me find out what is true and what is not?

Looking for information on Eugene Bias Gatewood from Bath county Va. Brother of VMI cadet Andrew C. L. Gatewood who located in Pocahontas county, WV following the Civil War. A.C.L. Gatewood is famous for his letters at the beginning of the war while at VMI. I suspect Bias may have also lived in Pocahontas or Randolph county WV also. I have a CDV of him that came from a Randolph county album. Was Bias a Confederate soldier also?

I am trying to follow a very sketchy lead to get us past a road-block on our Gatewood ancestors. It's odd that Freeman Gatewood and Stephen Gatewood (brothers) were born in York County, VA in the early 1800s, yet there is no evidence of any Gatewoods in that area at that time (that I can find -- someone please feel free to prove me wrong). I have two separate records of a marriage that took place in Henrico Co, NC between Elizabeth Freeman (daughter of Isham Freeman) and William Gatewood Allen in 1792. I can find nothing in the way of census records, birth records of children or anything else pertaining to this couple. I did find a few notices of an Isham Freeman purchasing land along the Beaver Dam Creek in Virginia (which is York County), but I'm not sure if it's Elizabeth's father. I also found York County tax records for a William Allen in 1800, but I can't tell if that's the same William Allen whose "middle name" is Gatewood and who married Elizabeth Freeman. Anyone with info regarding Henrico County, NC or York County, VA or any information on those people mentioned, please contact me. I'm trying to determine if that couple is in any way related to our missing Freeman/Stephen Gatewood ancestors (thinking that perhaps they changed their surname). Thanks!

I am attempting to do research on my father's family. His father's name was Dewitt Gatewood and his mother was Martha Eleanor Martin. My father's name was George Cornelius Gatewood. I was told he was named for his grandfathers and his maternal grandfather was George Washington Martin so I presume his fraternal grandfather was Cornelius Gatewood. He was born in Temple, Texas in 1911. I have not been able to start the thread for our family, can you help.

My great-great-great grandmother was Fannie Gatewood, from Caroline County, Virginia, I believe. She married Barbee Spindle. I was told that she claimed to be a direct descendant of Thomas Jefferson. I believe her father was Ruben Gatewood and her mother was Mary? Burke. I have not been able to find any documentation to support her claim to Jefferson descent. do you know anything about any of this?

James married Rebecca M White, daughter of Isaac S White and Mary C, on 10 Nov 1880 in Pittsylvania County, Virginia. Rebecca was born 9 Apr 1857 in Virginia. She died 31 Oct 1911 in Pittsylvania County, Virginia and was buried in Chatham Cemetery. They had the following children:

Iam trying to find out information about my mothers side of the family. Rebecca Gaus was my grandmother. She was married to Carl Gatewood. Sandy (my mom) is the daughter of Rebecca Gaus & Carl Gatewood. I believe there were a few other siblings which a couple of names were Dixie & Butch. My mother Sandy Gatewood Crane & my father Harley Crane died in a trailor fire in 1976 Zanesville, Ohio. Iam the youngest of their 3 children. Iam trying to find relatives of my mother. Sandy Gatewood Crane died along with her husband my father Harley Crane in a trailor fire in 1976 Zanesville, Ohio. Iam the youngest of their 3 children. I know that Sandys mother was Rebecca Gaus & her fathers name was Carl Gatewood. I believe she had a few siblings & a couple of names were Dixie & Butch. Any information would be appreciated! I don't know too much, but Thomas Dunn (who married Jane Gatewood, as you stated) was closely associated with John Brown (apparently the John Brown who married Mary Kidd in Essex Co., VA by 1785 and who left an estate inventory in Essex in 1824....but I could not find a will for this John Brown). It appears that the 125 acres on Hoskins Creek that John Brown bought from Silas Mercer Noel in 1813 MIGHT have been the same 125 acres that Thomas Dunn's estate (apparently) sold to Samuel Crittenden. There is a 17 Aug 1820 deed of trust between John Brown (party of the first part) and George Wright (party of the second part), and Winnter Bray and Jane Dunn (widow of Thomas Dunn...so Thomas must have died by 1820) were the party of the third part (they provided the bond for this deed of trust). Maybe Jane (Gatewood) Dunn became the owner of the 125 acres of land at some point, IF the above deed of trust was pertaining to that land....but that is just a guess.

In 1827, a Christopher Brown became the guardian of a Kemp Gatewood in Essex Co., VA (and a Burnett/Barnett/Barrett Brown was also mentioned...he may have put up the bond or he may have just been a witness). No one seems to know who this Kemp Gatewood was (and an earlier man...born about 1780...named William Kemp Gatewood apparently did not have a son named Kemp....but Kemp Gatewood was most certainly out of one of William Kemp Gatewood's relatives). I do not know the name of the wife of Christopher Brown, but Christopher was a likely grandson of the above-mentioned John Brown who had married Mary Kidd (per a lot of Brown family research that I have done). In 1840, the above Christopher Brown appeared on the "next-door" Middlesex Co., VA census, and Barnett/Burnett/Barrett Brown appeared on the 1840 Essex Co., VA census. I don't know if Kemp Gatewood was living in one of those two Brown homes, or if Kemp Gatewood was out on his own by then. I note from census indexes that there were six Gatewood households in Essex in 1850, and there was one Gatewood household in Middlesex Co., VA in 1850. I don't have the actual censuses themselves, so I don't know if any of these Gatewoods included Kemp Gatewood.

In addition to the above, a Francis Nalle married a Gatewood woman in the 1700s, as I recall. Francis Nalle was a son of a John Nalle who had married a Mary Brown. Per my research, it strongly appears that this Mary Brown was from the same overall Brown family as the Browns mentioned above (this Browwn family has been traced back to a Francis Brown "I" who died in Essex Co., VA in 1691/1692). Wish I knew more.

Malcolm Monroe Gatewood b. 20 Jan 1915, d. 24 Feb 1982, m. Wilma Miller. They had two daughters, Charlotte and Jeanette.

Wilma re-married my father,Maxwell Duncan, several years later and moved to Tucson Arizona, where they both died in 1999.

Charlotte died several years ago. Jeanette has two daughters and lives in Tucson. We communicate regularly.

Jeanette is seeking information on her father's family. Her father's father was Daniel E. Gatewood, his wife was Charlotte Monroe.

We are thinking of taking a Geneaolgy Vacation to Virginia from Memphis, Tennessee this summer and are desparately trying to focus our research on something concrete.
Cemeteries, Land Purchases, etc.
Here is my take on things:
I really find it interesting that William Gatewood Allen and Elizabeth Freeman might have simply gone with "Gatewood" and moved from Essex Co, etc Virginia to the south part of the state and then into North Carolina.We know they met up with the Noblins in North Carolina, right?
Guilford, Rockingham, and Caswell Counties seem to have a treasure trove of Gatewoods, but related to our line? who knows...maybe.
The Freeman has just got to be in this line. I even thought Lucy might be a surname and not a given name.
Guide me so that we don't waste too much time, energy, and money.
We are searching for where the Mystery Gatewood and wife Lucy lived. There is just no way the children would all move off to TN, AL, MS etc. with Mother Lucy alive.

Ruby Stokes Gatewood, 88, of Rector died Saturday, April 14, 2001, at Heritage Nursing Home in Kennett.
She was born Nov. 9, 1912, in Rector to the late Alfred Marion and Stella Stokes.

She was a homemaker, a member of the Fifth and Pine Church of Christ, the Eastern Star and the Clay County Extension Homemakers Club.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Oran Gatewood; two brothers, Ed and Edgar Stokes, and one sister, Bertha Cook.

She is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Martha Kay and Donald Ward of Kennett; one sister, Eva Graham Frets of Rector; two grandchildren, Jeffrey Ward and Melanie Gardner, and one great-grandchild, Ethan Thomas Gardner.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, April 17, at Mitchell Funeral Home Chapel in Rector with C. Ray Miller and Ken Roden officiating. Burial was in Woodland Heights Cemetery in Rector with Mitchell Funeral Home of Rector in charge of arrangements.

Pallbearers were Bill Copeland, Weldin Wimberley, Richard Simmons, Reuben Seay, Lynn Wimberley and Bill Benson.

The family asks that memorials be made to the Fifth and Pine Church of Christ bus fund or the Paragould Children's Home. Selma M. Gatewood

Selma M. Gatewood, 92, of Flint, Mich., a native of Rector, died Thursday, April 5, 2001, at McLaren Regional Medical Center in Flint.
Mrs. Gatewood was born Sept. 11, 1908, in Rector to the late Charles and Rosa Johnson and had been a resident of the Flint area since 1939. She was employed by The Fair Store and J.C. Penney for many years.

Survivors include friend and companion, John Shiraef of Flint; two daughters, Kathryn and husband John Ayres of Lapeer, Mich., and Rosemary and husband Stanley Conrad of Montrose, Mich.; daughter-in-law, Beatrice Gatewood; seven grandchildren; eight great-granchildren; friend and caregiver, Elaine Bielski of Flint; sister-in-law, Hazel Johnson of Flint; family member, Dr. Janice Gatewood, and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ardus, in 1967; son, Bobby Gatewood, in 1996; granddaughter, Barbara Gatewood, in 2000; brother, John Johnson, and sisters, Irene Caldwell, Ethel Hargraves and Mary Highfill.

Funeral services were at 1 p.m. Monday, April 9, at Swartz Funeral Home in Flint with Rev. Maurice V. Anderson officiating. Burial was in Evergreen Cemetery.

The only bit of information I have on your query regarding Greenwood Gatewood and Rebecca Hensley is the following, but I hope it offers some clues for you in your search:

GREENWOOD GATEWOOD, son of NICHOLAS GATEWOOD and wife SALLIE, was born March 9, 1847 in Tennessee. He died April 30, 1885 and was buried in the Gatewood Cemetery in Hardeman County.
He married REBECCA A. HENSLEY on March 2, 1871 in Hardeman County, Tennessee. Rebecca was born circa 1857 in Tennessee, and died on December 11, 1910. She is buried in the Gatewood cemetery.

GREENOOD, called "GREEN" was the 7th of 9 children born to Nicholas and Sallie Gatewood. His siblings were:

1 WILLIAM M. GATEWOOD, born 1836, married MARTHA EMILY SIMS.

2 PETER M. GATEWOOD, born 1837.

3 AMANDA JANE GATEWOOD, born 1839, died about 1920, married GEORGE L. BURNETT

4 MARGARET GATEWOOD ( called "Buck") born abotu 1840, died 1929. Married W.P. BURNETT

Charles & Dewitt's paternal grandmother was Susannah McKay who is a great-granddaughter of Moses McKay (youngest son of Robert Mackay Sr.). I'm descended from Moses's brother Robert Jr.

Lt. Charles Bare Gatewood is a descendant of Robert Mackay Sr., a Quaker Pioneer settler in what is now Warren County, VA. He descends through his youngest son Moses McKay who settled on a tract of land in Shenandoah County which is where Charles was born.

Charles's grandmother was Susannah McKay (John Gatewood's mother).

I too would like to track down any descendants of Charles's two children. I have both books written about him which I've advertised on our family website (http://www.robertmackayclan.com)

J.G. Gatewood appeared in the 1900 census with out his wife. It is believed Sarah died cira 1899.
