I apologize but the town in Tx was La La Feria, Tx. The home site in Mississippi was Prairie, Tx. and I think that is what confused me. However Aberdeen, Ms is where the family leaves notes. Cousins have been there but I have not. Hope this helps others.
Scarlett

My grandfather was Clinton Gillespie Gathings, who was mayor of Lexington, Tenn. Another brother was mayor of LaPrairie, Texas and yet another brother was mayor of Aberdeen, Miss. My cousin, Ezekial Candler Gathings, was a congressman from Ark. My greatgrandfather was Sampson Gathings of Miss. and his two brothers, Col James Jackson Gathings and Philip Gathings moved to Texas and founded Covington, Texas, named after James wife, Martha Covington Gathings. The family originally came from North Carolina and there is family still there. I have been told at the library in Aberdeen, Miss there is a box where Gathings kin can leave messages. I am happy to answer any questions I can and learn more as well.

Although I have one Gathings (GATHENS) in Decatur Co. TN, I haven't actively pursued. Suspect they were from Anson Co. NC, but pure speculation.

I know there was a C.G. GATHINGS in Lexington, Henderson Co. TN. He was former mayor of Lexington.

I thought you might be interested in the below. Maybe a lead.

C.G. GATHINGS, railroad agent, was called to his boyhood home at PRAIRIE, MISS., on account of illness of one of his children, who, with MRS. GATHINGS, was spending the summer in Mississippi. MR. GATHINGS was afterward Mayor of Lexington more than one term and brought the first automobile to Lexington, a Marathon, we believe MR. GATHINGS is now railroad agent at WHEATLEY, ARK.

SOURCE: "The Lexington Progress" newspaper, Lexington, Henderson Co. TN, 2 AUG 1935 column by W.V. Barry editor, in book "W. V. Barry's Lexington Progress 1884-1946", edited by Brenda Kirk Fiddler, Editor, Lexington, TN, 1995

Further from that same book, W.V. Barry writing about the Tennessee Midland Railroad
The third and present agent, MR. C.G. GATHINGS was already an N-C man, coming to LEXINGTON from the smaller place of OAKLAND. MR. GATHINGS came to Lexington in 1896......

column goes on, paraphasing, MR. GATHINGS has served three times as Mayor.

Don't know location of OAKLAND, possibly in TN.

Hope this helps you. Linda
Re: Gathings before America

I have just started to search the Gathings family and this my first site and chat room. I was born and raised in Wadesboro, NC (Anson County). My father was Charles Joseph Gathings, son of Charles Joshua Gathings. My father was one of six children born to Charlres Joshua and Eunice Rose. My grandmother (Eunice) was a Rose from highlands of Scotland. Her family owned the property where they settled. They lived on Magnolia Avenue...so named for the Magnolias my grandfather planted up and down both sides of the street. It came off of Rose Terrace which was the main drag on Rose Hill. The Rose ancestry home, Kilravoc Castle near Inverness, Scotland web site is: www.Kilravockcastle.com.

My father's brother was named John Edgar Gathings. He served in WWII and later was the Postmaster in Wadesboro. He had one child, a son, named John Gable. My uncle died a couple of years ago. Gable is single and still resides in Wadesboro. He is the end of our "line", though there are many other Gathings in Wadesboro who are kin.

My grandfather died before I was born, so I know nothing about him . Unfortunately, the Rose clan is well documented but the Gathings family (at least for my immediate family) was not researched. The other Gathings, still in Anson County and surrounding area, may have delved into it more. I remember hearing that they came from England and that there is a street in London called Gathings Street.

I remember we had an uncle "Jack" in town that we used to get together with when I was very young. I'm guessing he may have been my grandfather's brother. As you probably know, Jack is a nickname for John.

Where do you fall into this picture?

My mother-in-law had in her possession at the time of her death a memorial card that was put out on the occasion of the death of E.W. Gathings at Covington, TX on Dec. 4, 1893. On the back of this card is an obit for him from the local newspaper. Says he was married to Miss Ada O. King of Weatherford, TX. Does not list any other survivors.

As far as I know there is no connection from my husband's family to the Gathings family. My husband's family were the Hasty family, Cooper family and Smith family of Hill and Johnson Co., TX. Know Hastys came from Tennessee and Coopers were from Mississippi. Smiths were from Greenville, TX but don't know from where before that.

If anyone is interested I will be glad to post the entire obit as it appears on the back of the black memorial card with gold lettering.

V.

The obit for E.W. Gathings reads as follows:

GATHINGS--E.W. Gathings was born April 17, 1859, and died just before 7 o'clock p.m., December 4, 1893, at his home in Covington, Texas. He was married to Miss Ada O. King, of Weatherford, Texas, October 11, 1882. He joined the M.E. Church, South, in the spring of 1885, at Weatherford, Texas. His wife was a member of this Church before their marriage. He was a farmer and stockraiser and succeeded, for he possessed a fine brain for a business man. In his last days he talked to his wife and told her that he was prepared to go, and was resigned to the will of God. No one has ever passed from this community whose death caused more sorrow, or elicited more sympathy. The power of God is alone able to give comfort, and to his power and his love we commend the grief-stricken family. Their family circle has been sadly broken, but it will be made whole again.

Signed by: J.M. Rogers
Covington, Texas

Elizabeth Gathings...1823...Chatham County North Carolina

Chatham County, NC. marriage records shows Elijah Hickman married Elizabeth Gothings July 22, 1823. I believe Elizabeth's last name is mis-spelled. I think it is probably Gathings since the surname Gothings do not appear anywhere else. Elizabeth probably died before 1830 because it appears that Elijah Hickman remarried in 1830 ( also in Chatham Co. )
Does anyone have any information on Elizabeth Gathings?

I'm looking for the parents of Mary Gathings 12/6/1787 +1/17/1859 in Anson County, NC.
I've found that they had a daughter born 1828 or 1830 (depending on which census you look at), who was born Chatham co. NC and moved to IN later on. Mary Polly Hickman

Does anyone have any information on the Gathings Family?
My grandfather was born Eddie Gathings in Greenville, MS in 1923. His last name was changed due to a clerical error to Gaston in 1950s, after moving to Gary, IN. His parents were named John Wesley and Alto (Anderson) Gathings. I need any information available, I would really appreciate it.
