Gatley Jr., Keith, both of Niagara Falls, Earl of Wheatfield, Mrs. Charles (Connie) Frantz, Mrs. Ronald (Fay) Robbins, both of the Town of Niagara, Mrs. Michael (Cynthia) Schavf of Wichita, Kan.; son of Mrs. Ruby Gatley of Niagara Falls; brother of Edwin of Ransomville, Clifford of Rochester, Jerome of Colorado, Mrs. Albert (Aleda) Behm of Utica, N.Y., Mrs. Phyllis Jeffery of Ransomville, Mrs. Robert (Lois) Molnar of Medina, Mrs. Timothy (Brenda) Wilson of Barker, Mrs. Zora Wvendsch of Buffalo, also survived by nine grandchildren and several nieces and nephews, brother of the late Miss Sylvia Gatley.
Funeral services will be held Thursday at 1 p.m. at the Rhoney Funeral Home, Inc., 5893 Hoover Rd., Sanborn with the Rev. Charles Hobbs officiating. Interment in White Chapel Memorial Park. The family will be present from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday. Members of the Wheatfield American Legion Post 1451 will conduct memorial services 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Hi:
On the Oneida County Genweb site there is a death notice from the 1989 Rome Sentinel for a son of Lena Gatley. Assuming it is the same Lena Gatley you mention, she seems to have married a man named Frederick Cardinal.
Not much help I know! Please let me know if you have any more info about this family... I am researching Veronica and your post is the first I have heard of her parents' names.

No Peter Gatley in the 1880 census but there is a couple Peter and Mary Gately in Massachusetts, however their kids have different names from the ones you put.

now a daddy of a seven month old son, named Chance. Sorry you could not find the 44/40, it's a relect. It was given to my dad, your grandfather, by a Texas Ranger many, many years ago. It's a gun you use to fan the action, as you have to cock it for every shot. It's somewhere in that basement, I bet. How's you mom? Hope she is well. Let's keep some dialogue going.\

Randy...See you are looking for geneology on our family. That's great! I have been too. Visit the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints Library in your area, and they will help you with tracing the Gatley name, free. I am beginning to search the Gatleys myself. At 75 now, I had better get busy. Say, your dad hid a 44/40 six shooter in his basement. One I had sent him to keep for a while. Did you ever find it?

I am looking for information about Ella Gatley. She was born in Apr 1886 in or around Utica, New York. I found her, her mother, and 3 brothers in the 1900 census, but no father. He mother is Mary (don't know maiden name) born in Nov 1856 in New York. Her brothers are William, Nov 1878, Bertrand, Feb 1881, and George, Mar 1883. William was born in Canada, but the other children were born in New York.

Any information or help would be great.

Your grandmother was correct. Ann Harding (Dorothy Walton Gatley) was my great aunt (my grandmother's sister). Her father was Gen. George Grant Gatley, and mother was Bessie Crabb. My gg-grandfather's father was Richard Kent Gatley married to Sarah Markham. I'd love to know more about the family! I have pictures of Richard Kent Gatley and Sarah.

I have contacted you before but had no reply. You state that Richard K Gatley and Sarah Markam went to the states from Wales and George was 4 years old. According to yor country census of 1870 George was born in Maine and his mother was born in America too. Do you know which is right. I am convinced George was born in Main because there is a record of his birth September 1868. Anything else you may know about Richard would be very welcome.

I am very interested in any information you may have about George G Gatleys parents. I am trying to find the connection to our family. As a child my mother always told us that Ann Harding was her half cousin or her mums cousin.

I have looked through the census lists in the UK and can't find a Richard Gatley born in 1837 as the American Census states. It also says that they arrived in Englan in 1849 where as you say it is 1840 when Richard was 3 years old. Is that family history because according to the census in 1870 his wife was born in America. I know you can't believe everything in those so I will try to trace Sarah Markham in the UK Census - that might be easier.

Let me know as much as you can - it would be good to find a true connection and then I could give you all the uk family history.

My grandmother Frances Gatley was born in Cheshire England. She always told us as children that her cousin was Ann Harding (Dorothy Walton Gatley) daughter of George G Gatley. I can't see any reason for there not being some truth in what she said but I can not find a true connection. George G Gatleys father was Richard K Gatley and his wife was Sarah. The census states that he was born in England and his mother was Mary H Gatley. Sarah was born in America. He married again in 1867 to May P. I need to know what Richard K Gatleys parents were called. Please help.

I'm looking for information on Dora Gatley, born approximately 1877 in Rome, NY. She married Albert Calkins in approximately 1899 and had two children, one of whom died in 1902 and the other was born in 1903. Her parents were Peter and Margaret Gatley. She had siblings who were: John, Peter, Gertrude, Veronica, Ida, Anne, Lena and Bertha. Gertrude married Carlton Worlock and Veronica married James Coleman. Peter married Ruth and John married May. My GGGGrandmother was Susannah Gatley who was married to Jacob Kesner. Susannah was born in VA 1799 and died in Searcy Co. Ark. I don't have anthing else on Susannah. Is it the same family you have. Barbara Davis

I have a John Gatley Kesner in my family , he was my Great-great Grandfather. On John Gatley Kesner, I show that his folks wereJacob Kisner DOB1800in ky DOD1863 in Snowball,Searcy Co., AR. Mother Susannah Gatley DOB1799 in VA and DOD in Searcy Co. AR They were married in1821 in TN and had atleast 6 children. I also show that my Great-Grandmother was Mary Jane Page Kesner. Mary Jane's parents were Hosea A. Page and married Susan Dotson .Now it gets interesting. Susan parents were Dock Floyd Dotson and Polly Dawn Raincrow. My cousin can trace the Dotdon's back to England. Does this help any. Your grandfather and my grandfather were brothers. I remember Uncle Howard and Aunt Dot well. Howard's brother was Albert Stewart Gatley, who I am named after. Strangely enough, both Howard and Albert married women named Dorothy; both Howard and Albert were known as Bud; both Howard and Albert's wives were known as Dot. I lived with my grandfather for many years and Uncle Howard came to visit frequently. I am currently a lawyer in Key West, Florida. I have a sister and brother (Julie-teacher; John- nurse). My grandfather (G-Pa) had three daughters- Barbara who died as a child, Evelyn (currently living in Ft. Myers, Florida) and Martha (My mom, currently living in Sebring, FL). Our great grandfather was Albert Stewart Gatley who was a banker in Washington DC. He started working at the bank as a janitor and retired many years later as the bank President. His father came to America from England, but I don't know what year.Our Great Grandmother was Mable (last name unknown) and was born in Tenessee, with parents from Ohio. Is that enough for starters? Take my word for it the web sites about Gatley area are not worth the visit and u will learn little. If you can give me a real home address there is a "tithe" map circa 1841 but no mention of persons named gatley (its on my wall).

What i am about to say you may already be aware of but just in case here goes....

There is a problem when hunting english names down through the years, the slow intoduction of a standard dictionary, local dialect/accsent, and illiteracy, i.e. people wrote or had written for them what their name SOUNDED like, so perhaps your seach should expand into Gateley too ?which is an "up-market" variant of your surname. (pronounced in the u.k. as gate-lay).

This is a snag i ran into as my surname runs to the following
"whyte"
"waite"
"wyatt"
which all run on the same phonetic theme....please be warned.
But other than that like i said if you think you need any help at this end, give me a real address and i will send whatever i can by post.( i only have a basic p.c. set up and scanning ect is out of the question at present....having trouble convincing wife that such things are esantial) no charge, glad to be of any assistance.

It is sad to here that Gatley may soon be a memory due to the demands of the surrounding area(s).

Whilst I do not carry the surname "gatley" I am living in the said area, if you require any info on the local area let me know, there is v little about this obscure little suburb of stockport/cheadle on the net I know because i have looked. You may find that it will soon be gone altogether swallowed up modern demands on living space.

I think if you are trying to make an ancestor seach the net is probably still your best bet.

Hello all. Randy Gatley from Milwaukie, Oregon (Portland area). I have lived in Mil. since birth (1963). My father is Howard Albert Gatley the 2nd/his brother is George Gatley from Yuma, Arizona. Their father,Howard Albert Gatley the 1st, was a retired Boy Scouts of America Staff member from Wisconson...beyond that, I know our decendants came from the town of Gatley in England.
Would love to hear from anyone with historical info. concerning my family line or someone who shares the same interests with the town of Gatley...would love to visit there some day!

There are two court orders in the Charles City County Virginia Court Orders 1687-1695 edited by Weisiger that state that Jno. Crew, married Sarah, orphan of Nicholas Gattley, etc. These two people chose a guardian named Maj. Jno Stith so they both were underage, I assume. They were asking for Sarah's share of her father's estate from the estate of Jno Smith who Sarah's mother married. Sarah Gattley Smith was the administrix of Nicholas Gattley's estate. The court did order that Sarah Gattley Crew receive 4605 pounds of tobacco from the estate of John Smith.

I am interested in John Smith. Can anyone tell me about him?
Was this the same John Smith who was the father of Obadiah and Mary Smith?

Check out Caldwell CO., KY for Jemima Gately, widow of John Gately (via Henry Co., TN, Caswell Co, NC) John was apparently the son of William Gateley of Caswell Co, NC (will probabed there). Jemima and John had children that crossed over into IL, other names were Heneritta Gateley that married a Kesner, Susanna Gateley, brother John Gateley, etc. According to another researcher there is a document in a history book in Green Co, MO that lists the children of John and Jemima..... I have no proof myself, but if you are interested I can put you in touch with the other researcher.

Sorry, but my name is Gateley - if you will do some research in England, you will find that in the Domesday Book, there was a place called Gatelea in Nolfolk (still there, but now spelled Gateley) and in later history, the name originated there - then spread westward in England and changed spellings from Gateley to Gately to Gatley. The name was also spelled Gaitley in the early history of the US. Here in the US you will find that most named Gateley are Protestant and those named Gately are usually Catholic.
My particular branch spells their name Gateley, but we do have one branch that has dropped the last "e" and go by Gately.
I claim all spellings - but sometimes cannot place the Gately's or Gatley's in my family tree.

I just found out that I am a Gatley (sudden discovery of a stepfather in the line). Anyway, I found Charles C. Gatley born Sept 5, 1874 in Delaware. His father was Thomas CW Gatley (also seen as Gattley). He was born in England in 1841. Thomas' wife and Charles' mother was Annie J Bromehead born in England in 1843. They were married in Philadelphia on May 21, 1872. Their first daughter was born in 1872. Her name was Martha S. Gatley born in Camden, NJ 1872. In 1880 you seen them as Gattley. Her other siblings were Charley (yours) and Sarah born in 1877 in Delaware. You said they were 1/2 sibs, but I didn't see that. What was your source? I also have other information if you want to email me at jslongordo@earthlink.net. I have a million questions, since I have been researching Roselle's for years and now they are of no relevance to me.

The above were 2 of 13 children of John & Sarah Gatley.
Both were born in Stockport 1814 and 1816 respectively.
Both brothers were assistant constables in Stalybridge during 1830's. John went on to become Deputy Constable of Hyde from 1835-1839. He died in January 1844 but not in this country.
Richard was involved in burgarlies in Stalybridge area with a family called Swan and was tried in Salford in 1844. He was aquitted but then he disappears. He did not die in this country nor his wife Ellen.
Can anyone help with any details about either of these two brothers?

Looking for any gatley with loved ones buried at Calvary. Seems that there must be Gatley still alive that I am related to . Thier is a Timothy Gatley, Catherine Gatley, Harriett Cunningham and several other buried in my GG grandfather grave. I know that Catherine Gatley was married to Timothy and Harriett was Catherine sister(they are my great aunts).
Very upsetting to know that Catherine Gatley was buried there on Dec 18 1989, and I do not know who holds the deed. I would like to meet this person since we must be related and they also would be related to Catherine ETC>
Please email me if you see a connection to the following surnames buried in this plot # N range 2 section 40 graves 3/4. Surnames are WALSH GATLEY CUNNINGHAM KELLY
The headstone is big but does not list all these names. I got the information from the office, however they can not release the person name that now owns the deed. What a shame.

This is in response to your message concerning Samuel Joseph GATLEY which was posted by my Brother James P. Gatley sometime ago. I am interested in your relationship to our family (is it your step father in the line? or whose?) Also fascinated by your interest in the Roselle tree. There is a definite link between the two. Martha Gatley, my grandfather's older sister was housekeeper in the John Roselle home in the 1900 census. There was also a four year old boarder named Herbert Gatley, born in 1896, living with them. Years later in 1936, when a Herbert Roselle applied for Social Security at the age of 40, he listed his mother's maiden name as Martha Gatley and his father's name as William Roselle. We gather that this William was the son of John. When the two might have married or when he adopted little Herbert we do not know. We have information of the descendants of Herbert, which you probably have also since you have done research.

I was wondering if you have any infor. on LUCRETIA GATELY b. 1803 North Carolina d. 1888 and buried in SOUTH LINE COUNTY CEMETARY, JACKSON CO., IL.
She married WILLIAM "BILLY" THETFORD in May of 1820 in MADISON CO., TN.
Her children were: John R. Thetford b. 1825
Henry Thetford b. 1828
Anderson Thetford b. 1832
She was evidently divorced (or at least seperated and not living with) later in life.

hi D, browsing myself and noted Warrington link. My grandmother was Eliza Gatley born in 1897 in Warrington and her father i believe was Hamlet Jackson Gatley her mother's maiden name was Arnlod. Associations with Gatley farm have been muted by my mother any connection? Eliza's siblings were Maggie, Bessie, Auther, Harry, Ethel and Annie.
