Welcome cousin. I suppose you know the Capt. Charles's parents were Martha M.Farris and james Gatliff. Looks like the Farris family stayed around the Gatliffs. Do you have a copy of the story about the kidnapping of Capt Charles's family? If you do not, give me your e-mail and I will send it to you. pat B.

Thanks for the reply Samantha. No, I don't know W.D. Jr. There is/was another GATLIFF family in the Conway AR area, but I never found a close family connection to them and I just looked in the phone book and they are no longer there.

If you would like to compare notes you may contact me direct at jorgegrande@comcast.net I have traced my line back to Wales in the 1600s. They came from Wales through England, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Kentucky, Texas (there's still a large group of them there), then into Arkansas in the mid to late 1800s. George

Hi Samantha. I was Web surfing and accidentally found your July 2008 message. Are you still out there? Are you in the UK? I'm in the USA. I'm not interested in a reunion but thought I would tell you that there many, many of us around the world. When I first started my GATLIFF genealogy research I too thought we were few and far between, but I found cousins by the dozens! If you are interested, I would be happy to correspond with you. You may contact me direct at jorgegrande@comcast.net George Gatliff - Arkansas - USA

Just read your post on 7 July 2008 re Moses, son of Aaron, son of Capt. Charles Gatliff. I also descend from Charles Gatliff, but wanted to let you know that I just found your Milton Gatliff on the 1850 census in Rusk Co., TX, 19 Nov, p. 298: Milton Gatliff, 30, farmer, b: Ky, wife Sarelda, 25, b: KY, sons William, 7 b: KY, Aaron, 5, b: KY, Jane, dau, 2, b: TX and Elizabeth, dau, 1, b: TX. Apparently they moved from KY to TX about 1847 or 1849. Glad to exchange info. lynda@ectisp.net Have GEDCOM with Gatliff info will share if you want it.

I have gathered info over the years from many many people.
Below is a copy of a letter that was sent to me about the Gatliff family taken during the war. Capt. Charles was not with the family when his wife and children were taken to Canada:
This is a letter written by Adelaide Berry Duncan of Sept 11, 1893 to her son George:
Dear George.
Your papa's grandfather and grandmother, John and Nellie Duncan, and my grandfather and grandmother Frank and Sally Berry, moved from Virginia during the Revolutionary War to Kentucky. I don'tknow just where, but it was somewhere in the best part of the state. There was quite a little colony of them but I don't know the names of any except these two families. They took up claims of land and complied with what was necessary to secure their claimsl I don't know what it was, nor how long they had been there till they were compelled to move for safety to a fort or block-house, where they were taken by British officers and soldiers who had Indians with them to whom the British gave all their household goods except two suits of clothes and two blankets to each man and the same to each woman.
The Indians would toss the pillows in the air after they had ripped the ticking to make the feathers fly in the wind, and how they would laugh. They wanted the cloth but not the feathers. They then started their march to Detroit, where they stayed awhile, and then on to Montreal, where they stayed till peace was declared. They were liberated, to get back the best they could. There was one family along who had a young woman-a daughter who cmplained of a toothache for some weeks, when someone examind her mouth and found a cancer had eaten through her cheek, all but the skin. She died soon after and the officers only allowed them to stop long enough to pile up a few rocks on her body. Charles Gatliff was her father's name. He came back to Kentucky and I saw him after he was eighty years of age. I also saw his sons: Moses, Aaron, Riece, Jim and Cornelious I also saw two of his daughters: Betsey Martin and Sally Faris. I suppose Joe remembers having seen one of his grandsons, Charles Gatliff, who moved to Missouri a short time before we left Iowa for Princeton. His wife was papa's cousin, Polly Early and your uncle, Harvey Green Duncan, married their daughter Lillian."
"I don't know whether the Gatliff family moved from Virginia or Tennessee to Kentucky, or not. I only know that they were together in their captivity." Pat
I had a genealogist do some research for me and she found court records that proved that Moses was the son of Aaron, Charles's son. It also named the other children of Aaron. I did not gather information on Moses's brothers and sisters. Did you know that Charles's mother and wife are both patriots of the American Revolution? Christina, Charles's wife was a prisoner of war.
I heard that she was taken by Indians for the English and taken north maybe to the Ohio area. Can not remember how they got away. I did not know about his mother. What did she do? I have a copy of a book by Ruth Hart on the Gatliff family, that has helped me quite a bit. Moses had a brother Milton born about 1826. He is my 2nd ggrandfather. There is very little info on him. I have been able to find his marriage then his son (Aaron Sylvester) is living with Betsy Cravens Gatliff at age 7 in the 1850 census. Do you have anything on him?
Who did you use for your research?

Hi Jill: It is strictly "out-house rumor". Some Gatliffs say that after the Revolutionary War, some of our clan stayed in this country and others, who were loyal to the king, returned to England. Those who stayed here dropped the "e" from their name to distance themselves from the "loyalist". I still occasionally see the "e" here in the U.S. I personally think it is only an interesting story. This is no help, only something else for your file!
