6. Furney F. Gatlin, born Aft. 1786 in NC. He was the son of 8. Stephen
Gatlin and 9. Mary
Harris.
Notes for
Furney F. Gatlin:
Given no other likely antecedents, I speculate that
Furney F. Gatlin
who appears in the Pulaski Co. GA tax rolls in 1816 in the same district as Stephen
Gatlin is another son of Stephen
Gatlin and Mary
Harris Gatlin. He also appears in the 1820 federal census for Pulaski Co., GA, under the name Farney T. Gatlin. I know nothing else about him except there is another
Furney F. Gatlin listed under the children of Thos. Mitchell
Gatlin and his wife/cousin Martha Winifred
Gatlin which makes it likely to my mind that the name belongs to this particular line stemming from Stephen and Mary
Harris Gatlin.
Since it is a custom among people of this period to name children after grandparents, I'm assuming that
Furney F. II was named after his maternal grandfather,
Furney F., and that
Furney F.I is the father of Martha Winifred
Gatlin and therefore the son of Stephen
Gatlin and Mary
Harris of Pulaski co., GA.
The older son in the family of Thos. Mitchell and Martha
Gatlin , Thomas
Hardy Gatlin, is named after his father and paternal grandfather, John
Hardy Gatlin. Since
Furney is such an unusual name in the
Gatlin line, I am assuming that
Furney F.I is the father of Martha Winifred
Gatlin. There is also the corroborating evidence of his proximity in Pulaski Co. to the Stephen
Gatlin family.

Gatlin of Pulaski Co., GA.

8. Stephen
Gatlin, born Aft. 1760 in NC; died Aft. 1823 in
GA. He was the son of 16. Captain Edward
Gatlin and 17. Elizabeth Johnson. He married 9. Mary
Harris 04 April 1786 in
Craven Co., NC.
9. Mary
Harris She was the daughter of 18. John
Harris and 19. Mary
Gatlin.
Notes for Stephen Gatlin:
I have ascribed three sons to Stephen
Gatlin and Mary
Harris of Greeneand Pulaski Counties,
GA, on the basis of circumstantial evidence. There is no contempporary documentation such as a will that names them. There is the will of Stephen
Harris, Mary's nephew, 1846 that names Mary as his heir. However, Mary is already deceased, and two of her grandchildren, Thomas Mitchell
Gatlin and Martha Winifred
Gatlin step forward to claim her portion.
It is a tradition among some of John
Hardy(Hardee) Gatlin's descendants that he is a son of Stephen and Mary
Harris Gatlin.
Researcher Eva Loe McDuffie who laid the foundations for
Gatlin research in this country claims that Edward
Gatlin was a son of Stephen and Mary
Harris Gatlin.
My identification of
Furney F. GAtlin as their son is really based on the two grandchildren who come forward to claim Mary
Harris Gatlin's portion in the Stephen
Harris estate settlement 1846. Thomas Mitchell
Gatlin is the son of John
Hardy Gatlin, which proves that John
Hardy is truly a son of Stephen and Mary. Martha Winifred
Gatlin is his 1st cousin who marries him in Bibb Co., GA ,in 1838.
They name one of their sons Thomas
Hardy after his father and two grandfathers. The second son is named
Furney F. The name is unusual enough in the
Gatlin line for it to warrant me to identify the first
Furney F. as the father of Martha Winifred and therefore the son of Stephen and Mary
Gatlin. The 1st
Furney F. is in the census and on the tax list of Pulaski Co., GA which gives further circumstantial evidence in this direction.

Gatlin and Margaret Walker:
Edward

Although I do not know another son of Stephen and Mary
Gatlin to whom I can attribute Martha Winifred
Gatlin, the fact that Martha Winifred marries Thos Mitchell
Gatlin in Bibb Co. makes me question this attribution. Usually marriages take place in the bride'shome county, and we have no evidence that Edward and Margaret ever lived in Bibb Co. although it is certainly possible they did.

Gatlin, born Bef. 1760 in
Craven Co., NC; died Aft. 1832 in GA; married Laney Worsley; born Aft. 1760 in NC .; died Aft. 1832 in
GA.
Notes for Shadrack Gatlin:
Shadrack may be the oldest of the children of Captain Edw. Gatlin and Eliz. Johnson of
Pitt Co., NC. He was of age along with his brother Levi when his dad's will was probated in 1781. Sue Guptill,a skilled researcher of
Craven Co., NC, and nearby co.'s speculates that he may be Eliz.'s child by a former marriage since there is some confusion in the will about his surname. However, it is the
Gatlin name which stuck.
I wonder if Shadrack is not also the father of Churchwell(Churchill)
Gatlin who marries Martha Patsey Moore in Greene Co. GA in 1802.
Church
Gatlin dies abt. 1816 leaving several children. Given the fact that any other attribution reg. Church's parentage seems questionable, his proximity to Shadrack in Greene Co. and his age
point towards the possibility of Shadrack and Laney Worsley being his parents. However, none of the names given to Church's and Martha"s children echoes the line of Capt. Edw. Gatlin/Eliz. Johnson, which opens up the possibility that Church may come from another branch of the family or simply be creative in the names he and Martha give their children.

GA.

Pitt Co., NC, Levi
Gatlin is listed as having three sons and one daughter, all under 16 yrs.
Note: Gourt Martial Records for General George Washington's Continental Army ,Aug.15, 1778, show Lt. Levi

Notes for Barbara Worsley:
The Worsleys: Barbara, Laney, Dorcas , and Benjamin make their appearancein
Gatlin research through the will of Dorcas Worsley Chapman, Beaufort Co., NC 1822 and the estate settlement of Benjamin Worsley, 1832. These two documents establish the parentage of Dorcas
Gatlin who married her 1st cousin once removed, Major
Gatlin, in Greene Co., GA , 1808. They also make clear who the two brothers, Shadrach and Levi
Gatlin, oldest sons of Captain Edw. Gatlin and Eliz. Johnson ,
Pitt Co., NC, married.
The Worsleys named were all siblings. They appear to have come from
Pitt Co., NC. The probability is that they are descended from one of the three sons of Thomas Worsley Sr., Bath, NC. The sons were Thomas ,John, and Joseph, all born between 1715-1720 in the area of Bath, NC. My hypothesis is that they are the children of a grandson, John Worsley II b. aft.1735 who appears to be the John Worsley who shows up in
Pitt Co., NC by 1762.

Notes for John Gatlin:
My data on the children and marriage of John

More About John Gatlin:

Notes for Mary Unknown:
There is good reason to think that Mary Unknown may be Mary Mitchell. That she is Mary Reel has been discredited by researcher Sue Guptill who believes that Mary Reel was a child of twelve in 1739 when she was supposed to have married John
Gatlin, Jr.
Richard Caswell
Gatlin, son of John Slade
Gatlin, attests that his grandparents were John
Gatlin and Mary Mitchell. Sue Guptill thinks he skipped a generation and really meant his grgrandparents since it is proved his grandfather was Thomas
Gatlin of
Lenoir Co., son of John
Gatlin, Jr. further evidence is the naming of Richard Gatlin's younger sister, Mary Mitchell
Gatlin. In addition the name Mitchell recurs again and again in the Thomas
Gatlin line all the way to MS And TX. So far, no actual proof has been found.

Gatling, born 1642 in Nansemond, Virginia; died WFT
Est. 1683-1733 in
Virginia. He was the son of 512. John
Gatling and 513. Anne Berville Reed.
Notes for William Gatling:
Book 7. p. 40. To William Olds and William
Gatlin, 650 acres in Nansemond County, at an oak of Kingsdale Swamp to William Collin's line and the line of Thomas Downs for the transportation of 13 persons. July, 1680.
Book 7, p. 90 to William
Gatlin, 280 acres in Nansemond County, on his own line and the line of Cornsoloe and William Collin’s line, for the transportation of 6 persons. 23 April 1681.
John and William
Gatlin sold their land to Col. John Bridgers before 1683. In "William and Mary Magazine ". Vol. 7. p. 243, is a will of Col. John Bridgers, 18 October 1683-86 "To my son, Samuel Bridgers, the plantation bought by me of John and William
Gatlin where John Cook now lives.
William
Gatlin was witness to deed of John
Gatlin in N. C. in 1683. Deed filed at
Chowan County, N.C. , proof that William
Gatlin went to
Chowan County, N. C.
Among the early
North Carolina records is a deed recorded in Deed Book W, p. 282,
Chowan County.
North Carolina. "Jacob Odam of
Chowan County for 106 lbs of tar at Collin's landing in
Virginia (Nansemond) by William
Gatlin, a certain tract of land at a marked tree in Mill's Swamp on Beaver Dam Branch, extending to Collins corner tree: then to the line of Moses Odam then to Moses Hare, etc., said land granted by patent to Jacob Odam on 13 August 1714," Test: Samuel Herring, Charles Mores and William
Gatlin. Recorded 25 August 1733
(N.C. History & Gen. Reg. Book 1. p . 109)
The following records indicate that William
Gatlin, son of John
Gatlin the emigrant had two sons, namely:
3. III (1) William
Gatlin. Jr. . born circa 1678 in
Virginia. Died
North Carolina (See Later).
4. III (2) Edward
Gatlin II, born circa 1680 in
Virginia. Died 1727,
Craven Co. , N.C., in the Precinct of Bath.
Bertie County formed from Chowan Co., in 1722.
The earliest Gatlins in
North Carolina came in from
Virginia. In the Land Grant Office, Richmond,
Virginia, Book 5 p. 59, is a grant of land 250 acres on the North side of Warrisquick River to John
Gatlin, the said land being formerly granted to John Bridgers, This Grant is dated August 21st, 1653. In Grant Book 8, p, 252, dated 1680, William
Gatlin and William Oldis were given a grant of land together.
In the
North Carolina History and General Register, p. 195, Book 2. is a petition for protection against the Indians, signed by Edward
Gatlin. This petition is undated. In 1713, William
Gatlin was a witness to a deed in
Chowan County,
North Carolina, and in the year 1747. a road was made from his house. On the 22nd of June 1722, John
Gatlin conveyed to John Edwards, 258 acres of land on Morratuck, South side of Welsh River - Book 2, p. 145. On 25 October 1733 in
Chowan County,
North Carolina, Deed Book W, p. 282, Jacob Odam conveyed land to William
Gatling and the conveyance was witnessed by Samuel Herring and William W. Gatling.
This William
Gatling is apparently the
Gatlin who married Charity Goodman, and whose will appears in Gates County, dated 1788 (N. C. History and General Reg.). His children were: sons, John, William, Edward and George, his grandsons, Edward, son of John, and Miles, son of John.
Book 1. page 221 Edward
Gatlin to Charles Stevens for 18 pounds 100 acres of land in a tract granted to Richard Braswell on 29 November, 1706. Deed registered 25 --- 1745.
Book 1. P. 278 John
Gatlin to Edward
Gatlin for 5 pounds, 30 acres
of land on the South side of Meherrin River, Deed Reg. 24 - 1740.
Book 1, p. 449 Deed dated 28 November 1750 for a conveyance of land between William
Gatland (?) of Bertie and John Ozburn of Brunswick. County,
Virginia, for 50 pounds, this land consisting of 50 acres. Test: Benjamin Hill, William Baker and Henry Stevens.
Deed Book 1, p. 87. Benjamin Hill. Attorney for David Vincent of Bertie, conveys to William
Gatlin of Bertie Etc. , deed registered 26 October 1743. Witnesses: Edward
Gatling, William Taylor and William Bynard.
In 1713, William
Gatlin was a witness to a deed in
Chowan County. N. C., and in the year 1747. a road was made from his house. John
Gatlin of Nuse conveyed to John Edwards, 258 acres of land on Morratuck, South side of Welsh River - Book 2. p. 145.
On 25 October 1733 in
Chowan County,
North Carolina, Deed Book W, p. 282, Jacob Odam conveyed land to William
Gatling and the conveyance was witnessed by Samuel Herring and William W. Gatling.
Mill's Swamp is in what is now Gates County,
North Carolina, according to the N.C. History & Gen. Reg. , Book 1, p. 106-116. Beaver Dam Swamp was at or near the Gates County line on Warwick Swamp. (N. C. History & Gen. Reg., Book 1, p. 6, and Book 2, p. 284).
William
Gatlin II, who bought the land of Jacob Odam is evidently the son of William who received the grant of land on the William Collin’s line in
Virginia in 1680. He apparently had a son, William III, born by 1702, died in Gates County. in 1788, married Charity, the granddaughter of Henry Goodman. William
Gatlin II must have had 2 sons, John, born by 1710 (3) Edward, born by 1706, both died before the 1790 census. John, Edward and William
Gatlin (
Gatling) were conveying land in Northampton County,
North Carolina as early as 1740.
There are basically two branches of the
Gatlin(g) family descending from William
Gatlin(g) b. 1640. By 1683, the family was purchasing land in Chowan Co., NC. William
Gatling I died abt. 1700. His older son William II b. 1674/80 remained in the area of the Chowan River. He founded the line of Gatlings whose descendants inhabit Chowan, Bertie, Hertford, Gates, Northampton Counties and other adjacent counties in the general area.
William II had a brother named Edward b. 1674/80 who was in the Bath Precinct of NC by 1703 and later settled along the Neuse River in
Craven Co. upstream from New Bern, NC. Edward was later a Justice of the Peace in
Craven Co.
A
Craven Co. genealogist named Ralph Mann, now deceased, reported in the early 1980's that he thought Edward to be the first sheriff of
Craven Co. That statement cannot verified. Edward is the founder of the
Craven Co. line of Gatlins. As in the Chowan River area, this
Gatlin line spread to adjoining counties such as Lenoir, Pitt, Dobbs, Beaufort and others. Many moved south and west following the American Revolution.
The Chowan River Gatlings prefer on the whole to favor the spelling of the name that includes the final "g' while the Gatlins of the
Craven Co. branch tend to drop the final "g.

The
Gatlin Family
Virginia and
North CarolinaAccording to English and Welch surnames by Bardsley the name of Catlin - Gatlin - Gatling have the same origin.
The Crest as given by Fairbairn is a Lions head erased and collored and lined - Plate 7 - Crest 10.
I. Emigrant John
Gatlin born about 1616, died after 1698. This John
Gatlin is the first of the
Gatlin name to appear in
Virginia in the land grant office. He evidently settled about 1636 in Nansemond County and Isle of Wight County,
Virginia.
In Cavaliers and Pioneers of
Virginia (By N. M. Nugent) p. 116 Vol. I. is the record of a patent to Delamunday with the following statements, "Lawson assignment to Delamunday who states his land was bought of John
Gatlin". "William Dawson, planter of Isle of Wight, assigned the above patent to said
Gatling of the same County 2 May 1637. "
In the same book, p. 47, John Bridges, 250 acres in Warrisquick County. 13 September 1636, joining to the North side of his former land, abutting the Northwest side of Warrisquick River and into the woods Northwest by North, 50 acres for his per adv. Note: 12 August 1663, this patent was made over in John
Gatlin, his name.
In patent Book 6, p. 40 for period 1666-1679, John
Gatlin 450 acres in Nansemond County on a marsh of Chuckatuck Creek over against Mage Dawson's land and lying along Gibson's line for transportation of nine persons.
Patent Book 6, p. 460. To John
Gatlin 250 acres in Nansemond County, this land formerly granted to John Bridgers and lately found to Elizabeth, his mother, 28 October 1672.
From Seventh Century Isle of Wight County,
Virginia, page 147, dated Nov. 10, 1676 - "Received letter from Governor per Colonel Morrison and sent a proclamation to Nansemond County,
Virginia, on the 15th. Sent Proclamation to Isle of Wight County. The gentleman from Accomac desired men. On the 16th sent Mr. Kearney to speak with Mr. Gatlin (John
Gatlin - only
Gatlin old enough) and a yawl to meet him at Nansemond. 21st - Mr. Kearney came and desired we should not attack at Nansemond. Mr. Kearney and Mr. Gatlin went at night to fetch Colonel Dews home," Also see pages 580 - 659 - 681.
(These were happenings during Bacons Rebellion - said to be forerunner to the American Revolution)
John
Gatlin had a son William. This notation from William and Mary Magazine, Vol. 7, page 243 in the Will of Colonel John Bridgers Oct. 18, 1683 - "To my son Samuel Bridgers, the plantation bought by me of John and William
Gatlin where John Cook now lives. "
John
Gatlin went to
North Carolina by 1683. From N. C. Historical and Genealogical Register - Vol. I-IV. page 613 filed at Edonton. North Carolina:
Joseph Chew and wife Elizabeth deed to John
Gatlin land on west side of Richa Hock Creek, March 15, 1683. Test Thomas Cullen, Jr. and William
Gatlin. 1698 John
Gatlin 200 acres of land for transporting 4 persons to
Virginia. This land lying in Nansemond County, Va. near Mr. Walter Beasley.
From another Gatlin/Gatling/Gatland Researcher...
John came originally in July 1635 on the Ship Assurance de Loc. He bought land and later sold it and we believe he then returned to
England and married there. We think he returned to the Americas before 12 August 1663. He bought land from John Bridges on 22 Oct l666 in Nansemond County. No return of his wife is indicated leading us to think that she was deceased. Followup probably should be done in the area of
Sussex where her family was located.

Notes for
Gerard Gatland:
Notes from the research of Larry B. Gatlin :
The
Gatland family has been around the area of Cuckfield,
Sussex,
England since the late 1200's according to a researcher who has contacts in the area. In 1990, Larry consulted a genealogical research firm in Canterbury, Kent,
England ,called Achievements LTD. The researcher, Mr. Andrew Ross, said that believed the name to refer to people who live in "gated or enclosed land", indicating agrarian origins for the name He said the name may have other origins but he felt this was the most likely.
Land in
England was not much fenced or enclosed until after the Norman Conquest of 1066. Another interpretation of the name may refer to people who live near enclosed land, a location which may have been unusual enough to raise comment and to become a way of identifying a family.
Mr. Ross the researcher also stated that the name is mainly found in the southeastern sector of
England, spreading from the north midlands county of Stafford southeastward through Nottinghamshire,Norfolk, Suffolk, into the home counties around London. It's hard to say where the name originated, possibly in several locations at once when the ordinary classes of the English began to take surnames because of population growth and for easier identification of individuals.
Some modern researchers believe the name originates in County
Sussex south of London in the environs of the village of Cuckfield. Certainly it has been associated with the area since the late 13th century.
The spelling
Gatlin or
Gatling does not find its way into written records in
England until the early 1700's. Probably the name came to be spelled the way it was pronounced, sometimes dropping the final "d" in a more relaxed pronunciation, or adding the "g" where local dialect tends to add a "g" to a soft "n" ending as in county Staffordshire. The colloquial spelling of the name seems to have caught on in VA earlier than in
England.
