Did you hear of this event - this past June 26, 2009 weekend. I was not able to attend. Next year it's scheduled in Chicago. Please contact me. Thx.

Rebecca J. Gatling was the widow of Thomas Barnes Gatling of Jackson (District 9 in the 1860 census), Northampton County, North Carolina. She had a daughter named Rebecca M. Peebles who married a John Turner (J.T.) Peebles on Dec. 2, 1856. Rebecca J. Gatling lived with her daughter and son-in-law in 1860. You can find them listed in the 1860 Census records under District 9 in Northampton County, NC under the initials: R J Gatling, R M Peebles, J T Peebles, etc. You can also find Rebecca J. Gatling in the 1850 census for Northampton County. Hope this helps!

Well, my Dads family is from Ahoskie, NC. His name is Chester Gatling and his parents are named Tommie and Thelma (Outlaw) Gatling. I've always been told that we were decendants of the Richard J Gatling (inventor of the Gatling gun), but I have not found any proof of that. I believe that the real story is that my great grandfather used to be a slave of the Gatling's and when slavery was abolished, he took the Gatling last name.

Hi--I have a question about Richard Jordan Gatling and his wife. I'm told that my grandmother is a descendants of them, but I have not been able to confirm that. I do have ancestors from North Carolina that I am currently researching, but I don't have much of anything in the way of location/information/etc. I have two surnames: Garret (or Garrett) and Austin. Is there a published list of descendants for Richard and Jemima Gatling? Maybe I could compare that way.

I was trying to get more information from my grandmother but their phone cut out because of the hurricane. I do know that the papers to the Gatling Gun are still in the family and that William T. Jr. has them. I will try to find out more information, which shouldnt be hard to do because William Jr. Knows almost everything there is to know about the Gatlings.

I am African-American and am looking for information on any Gates Co. Gatlings (AA or otherwise). My great-grandfather was born there on Feb. 6, 1906, his name was Burden Reverend Gatling. I believe his father's name was Jerry. He married a Sarah Cherry from Bertie County, NC and they eventually settled in Portsmouth, VA. They had five children together, Burden R. Gatling Jr. (Junior), Margaret, Maggie, Dorothy, and Rudolph. I am the granddaughter of Maggie Passmore nee Gatling.

Re: Gatlin and Gatling and other spellings of our surnames

Mary, this gives me some insight as to ways of finding my Gatlin(g)s. Unfortunately, "my" James Gatlin married the granddaughter of a Gardner, the family of whom had changed the spelling from GARNER........ James and Elizabeth Gatlin were born in NC, went to TN and then to AR. They were in TN in 1843 according to the will of Elizabeth's grandfather James Gardner. They were in Arkansas and had 4 sons in 1850, born in TN, and their name was spelled Gatlin. There is nothing in any further census on them. It's possible the spelling had been changed thereafter. Anyone with info on James Gatlin(g) and Elizabeth Latham, sons Jackson-Francis- Andrew- William?

My search has come to a stop.... my father: James Wayne Gatling; g-father: William Allen Gatling; g-g-father: John Alexander Gatling and that is all I know. I know at some point they left NC and moved to Arkansas. I was told I am part of the Briggs Gatling family, but I am not sure. I know that there is also a connection to Sloan, my aunts are members of the DAR. If anyone has any information please let me know. shanagatling@yahoo.com

Claudia,

I have a very large Gatlin/Gatling database and would be interested in contacting William T. Gatling, Jr. so that I can expand it and make more connections among the Chowan River Gatlings(I use this term to describe all the descendants of William Gatling II b. 1674/80 who is presumably the primary ancestor of the Gatlings in the various counties clustered around the Chowan River of the NE corner of NC.

I am descended from the Craven Co., NC group who seem better researched than the Chowan River Gatlings.

Richard Briggs Gatlings settled in AR; he's a first cousin of Richard Jordan Gatling and founded big line out this way. I live in OK.

Larry Benton Gatlin
