Hello,

I am interested in any information you may have on Bertha GAUTHER. She is thought to be of Native American decent and is listed on the Ancestry.com message board for Braxton Co., WV (dated 2 Feb 2007). The following is information I have gathered to date:

It seems that Betha had a son, George W. WOLVERTON, with Joab Jacob WOLVERTON-5 (Joel William-4, Daniel-3, Daniel-2, Charles-1) of Hampshire Co., WVA. Census records from 1850, 1870, and 1880 all give the birth year for George W. WOLVERTON as 1822/23.

This would mean that George was born before Joab Jacob married Catherine BARTLETT in Preston Co., WV, in 1825. The 1830 census for Hampshire Co., (W)VA, lists a male ages 5-10 in the family of Joab WOLVERTON. This would be George, the child from his earlier marriage or relationship with Bertha GAUTHER. Most of this information can be found on pp.400-401 of Macdonald's "The Woolverton Family".

1860 Sandrun P.O. Webster Co., WV Census places George W. WOOLVERTON (extra O added on census) on the Thomas MILLER farm in Braxton, (W)VA. George was working as a farm hand when he met Rebecca Jane ARTHUR, also listed on the MILLER farm in this census. George and Rebecca had two children together, Mary A. Wolverton ARTHUR (born 1861/1862 Braxton, WVA) and Robert M. ARTHUR (born 1863/64). George was still married to Zelda DENNISON of Harrison Co, WVA. at this time. Marriage records show that George and Zelda were married in 1848. No record of their divorce has been found.

Wolverton researcher, Macdonald assumes that George died before 1860 because he is not recorded with his wife, Zelda (DENNISON) WOLVERTON, and children in 1860 Harrison Co.,(W)VA census. George is not recorded in the 1860 Harrison Co census with his wife because he is recorded in the 1860 census of Webster Co., WV, on the MILLER farm with Rebecca ARTHUR. No record of his death has been found.

Military records show that George W. WOLVERTON enlisted in the Civil War in 1862 and mustered out in 1865. Additionally, George W. WOLVERTON can be found in 1870 in Fort Lick, Webster Co., WV, and in 1880 in Holly, Braxton Co., WV. In the Veterans Census of June 1890 he is still living in Holly District, Flatwoods, Braxton Co., WVA

George married Julia HAMRICK in 1868 in Webster Co., WVA and had 9 children with her. Julia ran into trouble when she claimed George's Civil War pension because there was no record of his divorce from Zelda DENNISON. Evidently he was still married to her.

I would love to know if George's mother was Berth GAUTHER and whether or not she was of Native American decent. If she was George’s mother then she would be my ancestor through George Wolverton and Rebecca Arthur. Any information would be greatly appreciated!!

I am doing reasearch on the Larche side and hit a wall. the death certificate for Godfrey(one variation on his name) Born abt 1861 and died 1933. His wife was Mary Patry, and his parents were Joseph Larche and Marie Valiquette. Is there any connection to elise??

The information I have is Phillepe Gauthier in 1648 married Marie of Wisconsin a savage and their legitment children were Baptized at Mackinack,Island, MI I visited there in May and was told the records are in the Church on the island and I was to early to take a boat to the island.There is the Indian in the family.

Hmmm... Interesting. My family decends from "French" Canadians, and I have heard that in our history one of the family was married to an Indian woman. My aunt even has a few pictures in the family photo collection that make me wonder about this. The picturs are a mystery to everyone in the family nothing written on them etc. Please do let me know if you find anything on this book. To date we only have our family traced back to Peter Gauthier 1843 -1898. He was married to Elenor Gooler sp?

Hello Marie- I received a probate letter from the BIA last week regarding my grandmother, Marcella Guibord and it start my girls and I into some family research and we came upon your messages on this board. Marcella is my grandmother by marriage so I'll give you the family run down as I know it. My mother-in-law was LaVonne (Guibord) Barber, I was married to her son Rusty Spencer. In one of your messages you mentioned having lunch with Ted Gokey, he's Marcella's brother. My youngest daughter, Katherine aka Gadene was named after their mother Catherine Gokey. Yes, I know we spell Gadene's given name incorrectly, there was a lot of confusion regarding the spelling at the time!

In the letter we received from probate it lists the name Gitchi-Ikwe which I also so in one of your messages. We've done just a little searching on this name so far and thought you'd be the best place to start. Would this be Katie's mother?

Thanks for your help! I'm pretty sure we probably know one another, my parents are Tom & Charlotte Poss, they owned Sweden's.

I am looking for information on Louise specifically. She was my great-great grandmother. I have found her death record - died 9 feb 1925 in Maniwaki (attached to her in my family tree) and a residence record - census of 1851 (attached) and also their marriage in Papineauville 15 Nov 1858 - pgs 88&89 of 234 - Drouin - Papineauville - which I could not attach(as it doesn't seem to be a record due to its illegiblity).
I have two questions: Is anyone aware of the place of her birth? And my mother and grandmother have both told me that Louise was of aboriginal ancestry but none of the records that I have read confirm this. I would love to know where my aboriginal traits come from. Thanks for any help!!!

We know Marguertie Gauthier was born in or around 1849 somewhere in St. Lawrence County, NY----we have never found when & where she married John Baptize Tougas----the lived in or around Burke, Belmont, Chateaugay, NY & had 12 children. Interesting. My grandfathers name was Zephirin Gauthier, we knew him as Zephir, and my grandmother was Philomene Landry. They lived in Corbeil on a large farm when my grandmother was alive, but she died of tuberculosis when my father was nine or 10 years old, just before Christmas day. They had a lot of children together. I do not know who Zephirin's family members were, but Philomene Landry had a brother that was a tailor in North Bay, Ontario where my grandfather moved a while after he remarried.
Zephirin's first family consisted of Aurele Gauthier who lived in Kapuskasing for a while then moved to North Bay and owned a grocery/corner store, Dorilla Gauthier (my father) who lives in North Bay, moved there a few years after he was married (carpenter, land owner), Victor Gauthier (outlaw), Marguerite Gauthier (Beaudoin)Ottawa (vet's assistant, dog breeder), Antoinnette Gauthier (Tony) St. Germain, Toronto (antique dealer), Elzear Gauthier of Corbeil/Astorville (farmer), Marie Gauthier married a Boudreau (no comment), one sister that died on New Years at age 16 of tuberculosis same year as her mom Philomene, Cecile Gauthier Leblond lived in North Bay, Ontario, Lorraise Gauthier Beaulieu lived in North Bay moved to Perth, Ontario (social worker/child caretaker/adopted a number of children). In the second family a son was born Andre Gauthier of North Bay, Ontario (CNR or ONR employee.

My dad was named after his father's father or grandfather I can't remember which, but I recall him saying that he carried the names of his father, grandfather, brother and so on as so many French people do. It keeps track of lineage. Hope this helps.

I guess Philomene is a common name as this particular Philomene Landry was my father's mother and my grand-mother. As I mentioned they lived in Corbeil, Ontario, although her brother lived in North Bay, Ontario and was a taylor by trade.

Il semble que cet ancêtre avait une très bonne relation avec le seigneur

Joly de Lotbinière. Il avait deux terres acquises, l'une dans la seigneurie du
Platon à Ste-Croix et l'autre dans la seigneurie de Lotbinière. Les deux
terres se touchaient et était contigues à la terre de Étienne Denevers,
localisée dans la seigneurie du Platon. Plus tard, cette terre et l'autre terre
de Jacques Gauthier au Platon, ont appartenues à François Gauthier, le
fils de Jacques Gauthier. Les numéros des seigneurie sont différents des

I have Antoine Gauthier (born 11 May 1798), married to Scholastique Euchariste Calixine (born 1796) on 14 Feb 1820 in Baie du Febvre, QC Canada. They had 14 children. One of these was Victor Albert Gauthier (changed to Goochey on emigrating to the US), born 19 Feb 1827 in Hatley, QC, Canada and died 13 Jul 1907 in Indiahoma, OK. He married De'Lima Eleanor Grandmont (born 21 Oct 1832) on 2 Jul 1849. Victor and De'Lima are my 2nd. Great Grandparents. I have data on all of their children, here are some names: Joseph, Mary, Louis, Suzanne, Amelia, Augustus, Lucy, John, Agnes, Ida. Let me know if this helps.

I am interested in this also as the Gonthier/Gauthier comes up in my Ancestry .
My gg grandmother was Catherine Gonthier my ggg grandfather was Magloire Gonthier. Then his father was spelt as Jean Bte. Gauthier then his father Louis Gauthier and his father Jean Bte. Gauthier.
I am not sure which is the correct spelling.
Anyone out there with matching info please answer this.

You can get leonel gauthier obit by going pvillage on you computer that gets you into pennington county historical Soc. For 2 dollars you can purchase his obit. Also claude or Claudemire was born about 1908 If he was born in Minnesota you sould be able to find that on Mn . Historical Soc. births site.

It's been so long since your post! Hope I can lead you in a good direction if you are still looking. This is also my line and it crosses over the line of Robert Caron & Marie Crevet but not the same.
Etiene Caron dit Gauthier: from the Genealogie des Caron d'Amerique web site lists Etienne as married to Angele Chamous St-Per. 28 Jul 1800
It lists Nicolas Caron as his father and Madeline Champoux as mother. Problem with Nicolas is that he also uses Louis as a first name. So keep that in mind. Also found are two other sons: Francois who married Marie Bergeron and Louis married Euphrosine Prince. There may be other children I have not located yet.
I too am from Etienne, but through his son Paul. Paul married Lucie Bobineau. Children Zoel, Aurelie, Philomene & Severe. I am through Zoel.
