THIS IS EVERYTHING I HAVE FOUND OUT SO FAR ABOUT THIS ANCESTOR. I CANNOT FIND OUT ANYTHING ABOUT HIS ORIGINS BEFORE 1868.
His name is Clement Guttro(Gautreux) He was born circa 1851. He enlisted in the Union Army as a private on August 21st, 1864. He was in company C of the 10th regiment of Heavy Artillery Colored; commanded by Captain Albert Loring during the war of 1861-1865 (Civil War). In November of 1864 he received a wound on his right hand and stayed at a Fort Livingston hospital for 2 months. He was honorably discharged as a Corporal at Baton Rouge on February 22, 1867. In military papers in 1891 he was described as 40 years old, 5 feet 6 inches tall, yellow complexion, black hair and eyes. The family has in their possession a marriage license for Clement and Ellen Davis(presumably 1st wife) dated 10-19-1868. In the 1870 census of Orleans Parish—he is listed with a wife named Ellen and a daughter named Anna. He married Lucy Bolden on July 10th, 1890 in St. James Parish by Revered B. Washington. They together had 3 children—Leaner (b. 11-11-1890) Clement, Jr. (b. 1-18-1893) and Israel (b. 2-22-1897). Signatures for Clement on both marriage licenses in Orleans and St. James Parishes match. Family history knew him to be a preacher, but there was never any written record of this. The family now has possession of a marriage license that is signed by “Rev. Clement Guttro”. In pension affidavits St. James Parish Clerk of Court, E. J. Laiche, vouches for Clem’s marriage and states for the record that Clement is a preacher. His widow Lucy Bolden Guttro states in military documents that he died of rheumatism contracted during his time in the service. We have no clear records of his death. We have his signature on a military document dated 8-2-1898. His widow applies for his pension in 1899. The census of 1900 shows his widow and children living with his in-laws. PLEASE RESPOND IF YOU KNOW ANY INFORMATION OR HAVE ANY LEADS FOR ME. THANKS THANKS THANKS THANKS THANKS THANKS
