I am looking for ancestry for Josephine Gavel. She was my husband's great grandmother. She married George DeRenne and moved to Massachusetts at some point.
I believe George DeRenne was also born in NS to George Henry DeRenne who was born in France & Mary Suzanne DeLong (DuLong) b. France.
I believe she is the daughter of Bud Gavel and Annie Andrews? Assuming that is correct, I know little else about the Gavels from Nova Scotia. Any help would be very much appreciated!

I just saw your posting and the replies. Since it was from 2000 I am not sure if you still check this site...but my grandfather was a Thomas Leo (or Leo Thomas) Gavel and my grandmother was Ruth Gavel. They were from the States, but it is my understanding that my grandfather's family was from Canada. I haven't been able to find a lot of information on them...do anything of these names sound familiar at all?

Born July 23, 1910, in Quinan, he was a son of the late Elisha and Evalina (Hurlburt) Gavel. He was a former police officer in Yarmouth and Chief of Police in Shelburne. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge. Surviving are his wife, Beulah Gavel, Shelburne; daughters, Doris Mersey, Oshawa, Ont.; Joan Bain (Kenneth), Hebron, Yarmouth Co.; Donna Lancaster (Terry), Yellowknife, NWT; sons, Clifford (Linda), Yarmouth; Harry, Dartmouth; Robert (Debbie), Yarmouth; Timothy (Darlene), Mill Village, Queens Co.; sisters, Verna Naylor, Biddiford, Me.; Doris Hamilton, Marmora, Ont.; 23 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; four great great-grandchildren. John Conn in Gavelton

I recently discovered a John Conn living in Gavelton in the 1901 and 1911 census. I believe he was my gg-grandfather. He was a miner, of Scotch origin and Presbyterian. He had a family in Springhill, NS and was a coal miner there in 1881. Was there gold mining in the Gavelton area?

I believe he may be s/o George Fraser Gavel 1825-1894, who is s/o John Gavel and Lydia Barrows, George Gavel and Rebecca Fraser, John Wesley and Sarah Gavel. This is 2nd hand info.

I had a great-uncle named John Gawel whose wife's name was Anna. I do not know her maiden name.

My great uncle lived in Chicago, Illinois. His brothers and sisters were Catherine, Frank, Antionette, Anna.

His parents were Blazej Gawel and Aniela Pachorek.

If my memory is correct, haven't we had some contact in the past? Forgive me for having such a poor memory; it must be a family thing.I know I've archived corresponfence between us; I'm sure of it.

John did, in fact, marry Eva. Their son Charles came from a previous relationship. Catherine, Anne, Gertrude, Stella and Steve are reported to have a variety of different fathers, while John and Eva were married. The other children, Margaret and her brother George are reported to be the children of both John and Eva.
All of the children had either moved out or were removed from the home when Margaret was twelve. She was sent to the Truro School for Girls. She was a wild, uneducated back-woods kind of girl. She had difficulties fitting in. Sent out on her own at sixteen and pregnant, she went to the Home of the Guardian Angel to give birth to my sister Sue; we're reunited. She's fifty and living in Winnipeg. I was concieved on her eighteenth birthday and born, prematurely, seven months later. Margaret moved away to BC about five months later and is still there.

I grew up in foster care in Nova Scotia and now live in BC.By Margaret's choice, we have no contact. I want to build the family up in size and she wants to ignore me and for me to leave things alone. She fears the reaction of others regarging her colorful past; she's now turning sixty-six! I'm fourty eight.

I attended the 1987 reunion in Nova Scotia. I'm part of the California Gavels. My grandfather was George, My father was Kenneth Neil Gavel. I'm currently in Lancaster, CA. I have three younger sisters - Susan in West Hills, CA, Judith in Portland, OR & Mary Patricia in Pasadena, CA where our grandparents lived.
