Gawels in Amsterdam, NY

John Gawel born in 1906 in Amsterdam, NY to Frank Gawel and Katinzyna Sszegok. Rumor has it they soon returned to Poland and John came back by 1930 and married Stella Illnicki. The family does seem to disappear from US records until John appears in the 1930 census with Stella. There are other Gawels living in Amsterdam from the early 1900s until at least the 1920s but not sure of the connection. Does anyone know much about this family? Thanks.

John later changes name to Gavel

Jozef would not have been a close relative of mine, we came from Widelka which is near your town. I found a record showing that Jozef Gawel, age 35 years, came to the US on February 19, 1912 from Krezczkova, Austria. It gave his brother's name as Wojciech. Based on the name of his town this would seem to be your grandfather. I found two men who could have been Jozef one lived in Connecticut and the other in Cleveland, Ohio. If you would like I can look further and see what more I can find. If your mother or any of her brothers or sisters were born after 1912 then this Jozef would not be the right one. Some times the old records were wrong or misread and you just cannot trace people.

Have you been able to locate church records or census records for Widelka? My g-g-great-grandfather, Michal SUSEK, was born there in 1837. He was illegitimate, and his mother was Katarzyna Susek, also born in Widelka (year unknown). Michal was later married (to Hedvig ZUBER in 1867) and lived in Kupno, and I've been very successful tracing the line from that point forward. But I have had no success with Widelka.

Your best bet would be to get the church records for Kolbuszawa/Widelka through the nearest Family History Center. They microfilmed records of that era (up to the 1850's). The records are in Latin mostly but are fairly easy to figure out. There are other routes to get to the records (they exist today) but for the dates you are looking for, the LDS FHC is the cheapest and possibly faster way to access them.

Widelka had 300 households with about 20 of them being Gawels. I guess that in small farming communities the smaller bloodlines run out of males and go away while the larger ones just grow....

It would be easier if we took this offline that way I don't have to retype a lot of information that I otherwise could just mail you. Click on my name and email me your address. You need to do a couple of things. First come up with some goals for your research - "I want to know everything I can find out" could cost you hundreds of dollars and not make you happy. I think it's best to do as much US research as is reasonable before trying to do research in Poland. You should be able to find Blaze's WWI draft registration card and quite a bit of other info that is relatively low cost. There were three versions of the card I believe and one has closest relative in country of immigration so if your lucky you might find out a name and even an address in Palikowka. In the meanwhile I'll scout around for more info on my own. Blaze's daughter Mary was born in the US Feb 1900, do you know who her Godparents were? Back then they often were relatives. Like I said, need to define what you want to know; Blaze's parents names, his brothers and sisters, his Gawel ancestor's as far back as you can go (1800 is often the limit as records started to be required around that time). For the draft registration we'll need to find an address - maybe we can find him in the 1920 census.

Hi John, I don't have Blazej's naturalization papers yet. I do have his Alien Registration Form. According to the form he was born July 13, 1861 in Palikowka, Poland. He entered New York on the SS Lahn on May 16th 1895. He responded to question regarding ever served in military by saying "yes" Infantry from 1882 -1885. He first applied for citizenship in 1923 and states that the papers were lost. He completed another Alien Registration Form in November, 1940.

The form also indicates that he was a member of the Polish National Alliance from 1916 at least until the date he re-submitted the Alien Registration in 1940. His name on the Alien Registration Form is listed as Blazej Albert Gawel.

Hope you can figure something out with this information. As you can tell, I have hit a dead end. Thanks again for taking the time to do this.

Anne

Ann, During WWI Poles served in four Armies; Austro-Hungarian, German, Russian and Haller's or the Polish Army In France which was recruited from Polish immigrants to the US. You should have a couple of things I don't have information-wise with Blazej's naturalization papers. If he came to the US before 1914 he would probably have served in Haller's Army (see the PGSA website for more info/data) - I checked but didn't find him there but I could have missed him. If he came after 1918 he could have served in the Polish Army (they fought a major war with Russia in 1920) but since you said that "there was no Poland then" maybe he served before WWI in the Austrian/German/Russian army during peacetime. But unlike WWI when Polish regiments were grouped together into Legions, the Polish regiments just came from predominently Polish areas and serving in one wouldn't have been serving in a Polish Army. To sort out this confusion can you state what his papers say about when he came to the US, when he applied for citizenship, when it was granted, where they say he came from and what monarch he foreswore allegience to?

Couldn't help but join this conversation regarding Gawels Up for Grabs.

Hoping you have come across Blaze Gawel (b - 1860 (?), d - 1945) Blaze resided in Chicago, Illinois. He married Aniela Pachorek (b - 1865?; d -1933) Some of their children are:
Catherine, Antoinette, Anna, Mary, Frank, John.

I am trying to find Blaze's place of birth and his parents.

Let me know if you have stumbled across him. Thanks.

Anne

There are Gawels found pretty much from the southwest to the southeast but mine are so far all just north of Rzescow except for Marcin who went off to war with the Soviet Polish Army, married a Ukranian widow with a daughter and settled near Dresden, then East Germany, after the war. He gifted the farm to his 20-some year younger brother and was lost touch with after 1947 or so.

I see Rzeszow. Kroscienko is to the left of there, on the river boarder under Now Sacz. I am now looking for a city Kocur? or something close to that. This is my next city to search where they moved from around 1840. Have you found your gavel's anywhere else in Poland? Patricia

Naturally I couldn't find Kroscienko on the map but based on the index it should be near Rzescow. Widleka is just north of Rzescow in county Kolbuszawa near the town of that name.

Haven't talked to you in a while. Glad you have plenty of Gavels to give out. Would like to give away some myself. Was wondering where Widelka is located. Have found my Gawel's in Kroscienko, Poland around 1850 and then moved to Lesnica, Slovakia (changed to Gavel in the move) They listed immigrating from Lukavicz, Hungary. Lived in the US Pittsburgh,PA ; Baltimore, MD; Ohio. We will connect yet. GA peach, Patricia

Palikowka is east of Rzescow and my ancestor's village was Widelka near Przewrotne and Dolna Kolbuszawa which is a bit further to the north of Rzescow but definetly is the vicinity. Since the civil and church archives are at Rzescow it sounds like she could help me also. I've pretty much used up my allowance for February but I'll contact her next month. If you run across an Agnieszka Gawel born 1859 do let me know. She married my great grandfather Gregorz Gawel. Despite the same last name she was said not to be related which probably means she was a distant cousin from a village a bit further away than Przewrotne/Kolbuszawa which was home to other Gawels.

He landed in Chicago about 1898 or 99 but in 1903 was lured with a "free" homestead grants to settled in the western Canadian plains, near Weyburn. No mention of his brother John going with him so I think he stayed in Chicago. My Grandfather came to America and recieved his citizenship in 1941. He is now 94 and his memory isn't very good. Trying to find as much from him as I can but not getting much from him. All his brothers are dead he is the only one left from that side except maybe some cousins but don't know them. Will you beable to help me? I'm running into blocks. I did look up the Ellis island and found a Jakob Gawel arriving there in 1899 at age 19. Sounds like my GGrandfather but not sure.
I have written to a Polish born cousin working in the US, Stachnik is her married name several times (in Polish even), sent her all I had on the family and asked easy questions like what was her father's first name and got no answer. In my case, since I'm a retired US military officer I had a cousin seriously ask me if I was American Intelligence. Why they would be interested in the name of the tailor that Sophie Gawel married around the time of WWI escapes me but reflects just what you said about suspision. I visited Poland in 1988 but could not ask about family. It was hard enough for me to do since I was on active duty and did have access to classified material. So the suspicion was on both sides. If you figure out a way to send money and get up the courage to ask a cousin - post a message. We can probably get several people interested in researching the church records if we can figure out the details. I know that US dollars aren't worth what they used to be in Poland but surely they have some value.

You are right. Widelka was a very small place when they all immigrated. Now it is a little town. My grandfather on my mothers side was Ploch and they are many of them in Widelka. The part of Widelka called Przekupne. I went there to visit the whole family in late 70's. One of my sisters in law is Buczek and her father was born in Przewrotne. Going to church records would be the best. My cousin told me the book pages were thin and full of hand writen records. The cemetery would be a little more difficult. I wish I can get someone from my cousins to help me get the records. I know the church expects a fee for their records. So far I have not written to anyone about it because they will find it kind of silly.

I wish I knew how you could help! I wish I could help you, the Przybylo's do not appear in any of my Gawel family trees but they certainly lived in my birthplace of Sayreville, New Jersey. I have found that usually where Gawels from Widelka settled in the US you found Buczeks, Smyrskis, Weglowskis, Selwas, Plochs, Chemuras had traveled there with them. Widelka cannot be such a large place that these people weren't somehow related. I understand that there is a cemetery in Widelka and one in Kolbuszawa, are they small enough that a person could walk through and copy down the names and dates from the headstones? My grandparents had no headstone until many years after they died, I wonder if a lot of graves are unmarked? I continue to be puzzled by my relatives talking about neighbors with our surname (even my great grandmother's maiden name was the same as her husband's) that "weren't related". Frustrating....

The church will not cooperate very much. My cousins from San Diego visited Widelka last July and got their fathers and mothers records from the priest. Those included the names of their parent which we never knew. My dad is their fathers yougest brother. Until now no one was interested in this stuff. In Poland they are little suspicious why anyone would want to know. 50 years of comunizm will do it to you. They are not aware of the geneology craze. My maiden name was Przybylo.Good luck. If I can be of help let me know. I speak and write polish fluently
