Hello, I just read, with great interest, your original post which mentioned the surnames of Gay and Keefe.
We are trying to solve a mystery concerning these surnames:
Patrick Gay, son of James and Judith (Hanlon) Gay from Mullingar, Westmeath, Ireland married a Catherine Kelly also from Westmeath, in 1853.
They came to the U.S. in 1853. and had a son Thomas Gay in 1857 in Chicago. The mother Catherine (Kelly) Gay died in 1861 in Cairo, Alexander County, IL and the father Patrick Gay enlisted in the Union Army and was killed at the battle of Fort Donelson.
Their son Thomas was left in the care of a Philip and Catherine (Ross) Keefe in Chicago. They later obtained official guardianship of Thomas, and moved to Oconto, Wis.
Our mystery is the connection between the Keefe and Gay family. Why the Keefes had custody of Thomas Gay. Can you shed any light on the Keefe/Gay connection?
