      <description>I do so wish I could help you.  I can only trace my own branch of the Gay family back to 1763 with any certainty - speculatively back to 1669 - and I know how frustrating it is not to be able to get any further.  Unfortunately, with no details of John Gay of Dedham to be found on any passenger list, no definite evidence on any marriage record and no details of his age or English origins in his will, it looks as if his English roots may have to remain 'unknown'.  A fair number of John Gays were born between 1600 and 1615 - in Plymouth, other parts of Devon, in Dorset, Somerset and Wiltshire.  It seems that one of them is most likely to have been John Gay of Dedham.  I think perhaps it is safer to bear the various theories in mind, but list them as strictly speculative for the time being - otherwise it can be so confusing for other people just starting out on tracing their family trees.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;However, if anyone can come up with an authentically sourced version, I should be delighted.  It's an intriguing mystery and it would be wonderful to be able to solve it.</description>

      <description>I too would be very interested to find sourced information about John Gay's English roots.   John Gay of Dedham is my 8th Great Grandfather.   My maternal grandmother was a Gay.  My line goes from John Gay of Dedham as follows, John Gay of Dedham, John Gay, John Gay, Hezekiah Gay, John Gay, John Gay, Martin Gay, Martin Richard Gay (who moved my direct line to Southeast Michigan), Franklin Gay, Martha Gay Groulx, Joyce Groulx Miller, myself.   From John Gay of Dedham through myself I have everything sourced either through church, cemetery or census records.   I have seen the lineage listed back in England but as it is never sourced I have not added it to my tree.    </description>

      <title>Thomas GAY and Anne PITT of Stroud</title>

      <description>I notice that a number of researchers have included the marriage of Thomas Gay and Anne Pitt (1764, Stroud) in their family trees - and the IGI actually has a submitted record that this Thomas Gay was the one christened in MARCH 1729 (1730), presumably the son of Nathaniel Gay and Martha (nee CANTON).  However, there is no source documentation given for this particular link of the two generations.  I have checked the 1764 marriage record for Thomas Gay and Anne Pitt and that does not record who Thomas's father was.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;I have also found another Thomas Gay [IGI] christened in Stroud 15 FEB 1739 (1740), father Thomas Gay.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Does anyone have original documentation to prove that the Thomas Gay who married Anne Pitt was definitely the one christened in 1730.  Couples often named children after a grandparent, but Thomas and Anne named their first son Henry - and I haven't been able to find any son Nathaniel or daughter Martha born to them - or in that particular line of the family thereafter.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;I should be very grateful if anyone can supply further information or thoughts on this.</description>

      <description>This caught my attention because my Maverick Ancestors arrived on this ship. The original passenger list is reported not to exist. Google, passenger list Mary &amp;amp; John , and you can find a number of reconstructed lists. I don't find a Gay on them. I have some Gay cousins from South Georgia but I haven't found any connections to earlier generations.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Jim Rodgers</description>

      <description>Is there a consensus as to the last name of John GAY's wife Joanna?  I have always seen it as either Baldwicke or Borden&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;I do not rely heavily on Millenium files since I have come across many that are incorrect.  I would love to see a marriage certificate and perhaps birth baptismals for these relations! Lol! That would just be fantastic but since there are so many discrepencies I see this as a fond wish and not reality! :)</description>

      <description>Hello Robert - thank you so much for sending in this information. Perhaps I didn't express my query very clearly.  I am really trying to discover John Gay's English origins before he left Plymouth and sailed to America - so when I said we could start with John Gay at the beginning of the 17th century - I was thinking that if we could discover reliable research about his origin, it might then be possible to work back and discover his English family roots.  I do not think we can assume that because he sailed from Plymouth that he was also born there - so I was hoping for some evidence of this.</description>

      <description>Thank you so much for this.  It is exactly the kind of more detailed, reliable information I've been hoping for.  So all we know so far about the John Gay who sailed from Plymouth and eventually settled in Dedham, Massachusetts is that he came from Devon, Dorset or Somerset - and I think this is very likely, because there was certainly a nucleus of families named Gay in each of these three counties at the start of the 17th century - and before that time.  But there are a number of John Gays born from 1600 onwards in Devon, Dorset and Somerset - so is it documented anywhere that he was the one born in 1615 in Plymouth, as many people interested in this family tree seem to suggest?  Is it recorded anywhere how old he was when he died?  That might give a rough clue to when he was born.</description>

John Gay emigrated to America About 1650.  He settled first at Watertown, and was a Grantee in the Great Dividends and in the Beaver Brock plowlands, owning altogether forty acres.  He was admitted freeman Mar. 6, 1635.  With others of Watertown he was one of the founders of the plantation at Dedham, his name appearing on the petition for incorporation Sept. 6, 1636, and among the original proprietors of lands.   He was one of the selectmen, 1654.  He died March 4, 1688.  Joanna, his wife, died Aug. 14, 1691.  She is said in family tradition to have been Widow Baldwicke before her marriage to John Gay.  His will in the Suffolk records, dated Dec. 18, 1686, was proven Dec. 17, 1689, his wife Joanna and son John being the executors.  His estate was valued in the inventory at 91 lbs. 5s. 8d.  His children were: &lt;br&gt;   2.   i.     Samuel b. March 10, 1639 d. April 15, 1718&lt;br&gt;         ii.    Hezekiah b. July 3, 1640 d. Nov. 28, 1669.&lt;br&gt;   3.   iii.   Nathaniel b.       <description>Thank you dragonlady for your support - I think you and I are definitely on the same wave length here.  Perhaps we need to start with the John Gay who sailed from Plymouth to Massachusetts.  There seem to be a fair number of theories as to exactly when he was born.  Does anyone interested in this tree have proof that was he definitely born in Plymouth?  He may have sailed from Plymouth - but does it necessarily follow that he was born there?  Please can anyone provide documentation that verifies this for me? </description>

      <description>Am researching Christopher Gay, b. 24Jun 1839 in Wayne Co., OH.  He married Mary KERR 15 Nov 1859 in Crawford Co., OH, had at least one child (James Q. GAY), and then married Margaret Cooper HIBPSHMAN (HIBSEHMAN) 6 Feb 1868 in Crawford Co., OH.  I am particularly trying to find ancestry info on Margaret Cooper HIBPSHMAN (but also ancestry info on Christopher GAY.)  Margaret is the ggggrandmother of our son-in-law.  Two of the HIBPSHMAN boys were raised in the GAY household in KS as step-sons.  John Henry HIBPSHMAN, b.1865-1867 in IN was one of the boys from Margaret's earlier marriage, and he is the gggrandfather of our son-in-law.  Can you help me?&lt;br&gt;Thanx.</description>

      <description>&lt;br&gt;It could be that Delia Gay was Eva Cordelia Gay who was born in 1861 in Randolph County, Alabama and died in 1887. She married  a Ben or Benjamin Daniel, who could be the Isham B. Daniel you mentioned.  They had one child, Homer Harmon Daniel, born in 1886 and died in 1956 in Birmingham, Alabama.  &lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Eva Cordelia Gay's parents were Harmon Reynolds Gay and Sarah America Heflin. They lived in Randolph county, Alabama and in Stamford, Jones County, Texas in later years.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Does this sound like the Delia Gay who married Isham B. Daniel that you are asking about? &lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;</description>

      <description>&lt;br&gt;The Carrie E. Gay who was in Troup county, Georgia from 1870 census to 1900, was actually Carrie (Caroline) E. WARE who first was married to William Poythress in 1856 in Troup Co. Georgia, then after he died she married John T. GAY in  about 1862.  Carrie had a daughter with Wm. Poythress and also had a daughter with John T. Gay, named Eugenia W. Gay who married a Mr. NIX.  &lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Both Carrie E. and her daughter Eugenia were active in the United Daughters of the Confederacy from 1897 until their deaths.  Carrie was one of the first Presidents of the local UDC chapter in Troup Co. Georgia.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;I don't know about the Delia Gay who married Isham B. Daniel, and don't have a clue who her parents were. What is the approx. date of birth of your Delia Gay?  It looks from the census's that Isham B. Daniel was born ca 1863. &lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;I have a Delilah Jane Gay who married Joshua Screws and they lived in Coweta and Heard counties in Georgia, but Delilah was born in 1823 and she died in 1901 in Cullman county, Alabama.  She married Joshua Screws on July 18, 1839 in Coweta county, Georgia. She did not remarry after Joshua Screws died.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;If you can tell me the approx. year and place (state) that your Delia Gay was born, I can see if I have anything in my files.       <description>Hi  Marksbury is a village not far WSW of the city of Bath in Somerset.  It's a fair distance from Barnstaple - and a very long way from Suffolk, where the descendants of Nycolas Gay and Isabel Tuvie/Garland are reported to have been born/married. After a lot of research, I'm afraid I am really having difficulties linking together the separate generations of the John Gay of Dedham family tree as it now stands - though I agree that the individual pieces of information are all on the IGI as reported.  So if anyone can offer further enlightenment (and evidence) as to how they all fit together, I should be very grateful. </description>

What is the evidence that Richard Gay, born in Barnstaple was a son of Nycholas Gay and Isabel Tuvie Garland who married in Marksbury, near Bath?  According to the Marksbury Parish Records, a Nycholas Gay and Isabel Tuvie were married there in 1595, not 1559, so Richard Gay born in 1560 could not have been their son.</description>

      <description>Thanks for your reply.  Unfortunately the new link you have given doesn't seem to connect me to anything except this thread of messages.  I am sure that Linda Gay Taylor/Hunter was a thorough and excellent researcher with a personal interest  in and knowledge of this branch of the Gay family - but someone researching in the 20th century cannot be an original source for something that happened in the 16th century. However, if she discovered that Richard Gay, born 1560 was the son of Nycolas Gay and Isabel Tuvie/Garland who married in 1595 in Marksbury near Bath, then her records should cite some original document that is evidence of this.  Her other information about John Gay's family may well be accurate - and I think that Richard was very likely the son of a Nycolas Gay - but the Marksbury marriage record seems to suggest that his mother cannot have been Isabel Tuvie/Garland.  If you have evidence in the form of historical documentation to prove me wrong in thinking this, then I shall be delighted, as it's a query that's been puzzling me for some time.</description>

      <description>Dear David, I thank you for replying to my query. I have not as yet come across William Gay, your great grandfather's name. In the 1881 census of Canada, the surname in my lineage gets changed to Guy. All of the first names of the children are the same except that there is an addition of two more children and the son named Daniel is the same age as the one named John so that may have been his middle name. Then again it might be a totally different family. There is another Ruby Livinia Fry married to a Daniel Mack so it all becomes rather confusing. Do you know if you are related to anyone with the surname of Fry as that is how the connection is made to the Gay surname.  I don't believe anyone from my family was born in Galt. I did not know very many of my Canadian relatives since I was born and raised by my Canadian mother in the states. There isn't anyone I know of in Canada who is descended from the Gays or the Frys aside from Ruby's sister, Phoebe, who was my great gggrandmother. So,I am able to follow forward from her but have not found the link from their first homesteading in Prince Edward county and then afterward in Dummer. My tree is not on public view but I may do so after I have straightened out some discrepancies and added some more information.
