I couldn't figure out what was written, thanks for clarifing that. I have no evidence that my Robert Gayle is son of Robert Gayle Gloucester Co.VA, but the remark from Sussanah P. Smith will leaving her daughter that property in TN. Yet isn't Peter Gayle in the census 1840 in TN, Sussanah and Thomas son? Do you know if Thomas Gayle went to TN? On the jhemphill site it has my Robert Gayle born in Rutherford TN. I did come accross a William H. Gale md Sarah A Harris in 12-25-1823 in Rutherford Co. TN. I believe that Rutherford Co. is just outside of Nashville. Have you came accross any connection of William H. Gale to the Gayle of Gloucester Co. VA?

For clarification from Joice Gayle's application for Pension:

. . . that she is the widow of Mathias Gayle who was a soldier in the Revolutionary War. I do not know when he entered the service of the United States as we were not married at that time. He belong(ed) to the service of the United States at the time we were married he was under Capt. R. Gayle (his older brother) at that time who had command of a militia company and so continued until the end of the war. I know of no engagement that he was in during the Revolutionary War. I have heard him speak of being at Gloucester town when the great Battle was fou(gh)t. I do not recollect the numbers of his tours of duty. She further declares that she was married to the foresaid Mathias Gayle in 1780 by parson Fountain and that her husband the foresaid Mathias Gayle died in 1794 and that she has remained a widow ever since that period as will those ??? appear by ??? to the proof hereto answered.

her
Joice X Gayle
Mark

Capt. R. Gayle was Mathias' eldest brother. All four brothers (Robert, Thomas, George and Mathias) served together during the War. Thomas, the second oldest, was the one that married as his second wife, Susannah P. Smith (who was married first to Robert Brown) whose will you were referring to in Charlotte County.

The only thing I can make out of these Revolutionary papers is, Joice Gayle in July 4th 1836 stating she is the widow of Matthias Gayle, he was under Gaft? R Gayle, she ??? unknown what word are written Matthias Gayle 1780, He died 1794 the signture looks like Jrio Gayle, Thomas Hall Sept 20th 1837 affirms that his sister married Matthias Gayle in 1779 or 80 and lived together as man and wife until his death. In the 1830 US Fed Census Mathews VA, Have many Gayle living side by side. The oldest Gayle is Hanley Gayle 70to80 than Berthall? Gayle 40to50 Mathew,Robert, Thomas all are in the same age group 30to40. My Robert D. Gayle is born abt 1833 Rutherford Co. Tn, I cannot verifie he is the same Robert shown in SUSANNAH P GAYLE will buying items, Yet the link I want to connect is where she say's "Item 3. To lawful of Sally Crowder's body I give my tract of land
containing 86 acres more or less lying in Haywood County, West
Tennessee to be received by them at cost as part of legacy from my estate,
notice this considering the said land shall be reserved exclusively for a
home for Sally Crowder during her life and my desire is that the said
children shall receive on legatees part of my estate in like manner to be
equally divided between them at the death of their mother, but that the
whole legacy shall be reserved for the support of Sally Crowder during her
life."
http://ftp.rootsweb.ancestry.com/pub/usgenweb/va/charlotte/w...
My Robert Gayle/Gail married Sarah Seela.
I follow you through the Roberts -- but I don't have the first Robert's son that married Perlina James as a Robert Johnson. The only Robert Johnson I have is their son, who married Sarah Hunley Brownley. They had a son Robert Finley Gayle who is a forebear of a cousin of mine/your husbands and has done extensive research on the Gayles.

My question to you is how you determined that the father of the first Robert (my Matthias' brother) is a Matthias. I would be interested in knowing more about this Matthias, because he would be my Matthias' father also.

Our cousin has also never been able to connect the brothers, Robert, Thomas (m. Mary Culley & Susannah Smith), my Matthias (m. Joice Hall) and George -- who fought together in the Rev. War, with Robert being their captain -- to a parent so your clue that their father is a Matthias could be huge.

You may contact me through my e-mail if you prefer: g.b.weiss@comcast.net -- Thanks so much for replying, Gayle

Robert Gayle, son of Matthias, died in 1782. Was married to Sarah. His son, also a Robert Johnson, was born in 1769 and was married to Paulina. He had a least one sister, Elizabeth Frances. Robert Johnson, (the first I suppose) had a son, Robert Johnson, b. 1828 in Mathews Couty and d. 1917 in Portsmouth. He was a blacksmith. He was married to Sarah Brownley. They had 8 children. My husband's line is through their sixth son, Lester Templeton and Ruth Stores. They had three sons, including my husband's father.

If any of this is the least helpful to anyone, please email me. You may notice that this Gayle family was really into the old custom of using the vife's maiden name as a middle name for sons or even a first name.

The following advertisement was placed by John Gayle of Edgefield, SC (formerly of Sumter Dist., SC)
John Gayle's wife was Nancy Whitehead, sister to Swepson Whitehead, of Portsmouth.

Norfolk Herald (Willett and O'Connor),
Norfolk, July 28, 1803
Twenty Dollars Reward. RUNAWAY from the subscriber residing in Edgefield District South-Carolina, a negro man named JACK, of a dark complexion; about 30 years old, and about 5 feet 10 inches high; a little knock-kneed, and stoops in his walk, with a very large beard. He eloped about the 25th of February last, was taken up near Hampton and committed to jail, where he remained nearly two months, when he was hired out, and ran off immediately. I suspect he is lurking about Hampton waiting a favorable opportunity to get to the northward, perhaps to Baltimore. I hereby forewarn all Masters of vessels and others from carrying him out of the state, and from harbouring or concealing him. The above reward will be paid on application to Mr. Sweepson Whitehead, at Portsmouth, on delivery of the negro, or securing him in jail so that I get him. JOHN GAYLE July 28.
I have quite a bit of information on Josiah Gayle. He did not go to N. C. to my knowledge. He rather moved to Sumter Co., S. C. when he left Virginia. I have a plat of the land he owned there and a copy of his will.

I am searching specifically for the parents of Josiah Gayle. I know Josiah was in Gloucester Co., Virginia as his two oldest sons, Christopher and Josiah Jr. were born there. Josiah married there in about 1745. I do not know his wife's maiden name - only that her name was Mary.

It looks like our Gayles are not the same - but will keep my eyes open for yours. A Mr. Edwin Gayle lived in Lake Charles, La. and practiced law there. He died a number of years back and he was over 100. I believe his ancestor was James R. Gayle - we did connect back at the Josiah Gayle level.

W.C. Gayle is the one that others have mistaken my great great grandpa for. Reason is on his home stead pw, it has him as William C. Gayle in Pope Co. AR.(Eagle Gap now known as Acorn AR) He was born in TX. According to my documentation and newly found Gayle releatives, He is William Lafayette Gayle. My great grandpa William Andrew Gayle, was thought by the newly found family as William L. Gayle too. But my grandpa's delayed birth certificate and death certificate has him as William Andrew Gayle. My great grandpa and great grandma Rose James died in 1918 with the spanish flu and William Lafayette Gayle raise my grandpa and his sister Cleo. My great grandpa was the first born so not much was known about him since he had moved to OK. Where is Lake Charles, Feliciana Parish and Port Hudson?

You know it seems it wouldn't be that hard to find his parents, there was only John, Peter, and William Gayle listed in the 1850 census. But I can't get past it. Family documents have him b.TN. 1860 Golaid TX has his last name spelled Gail. Thanks for checking
Linda

I just tried email you and it damon back to me. all paste what I wrote e-mail me at bugnyou72704@yahoo.com so I can attach the other.
I am looking though my notes your e-mail address looks famuliar, I
might have wrote it down to ask you a question. I am linda. My Gayle
is
from my mom. I hope that you can read what I am attaching. Now this
what I about to say cannot be taken to the bank! it is just my little
puzzle.

I think John T Gayle birth Gloucestershire Eng 1700's or so went to
York Co. VA he married three times. first Joanna Walden they had
Sarah
1765, William A 1776, Elizabeth 1772, John 1777, Nathanie 1780,
Mathew,
Mary 1784, Second wife Nancy they had Thomas, George, Christopher
John T 1786. Thrid wife Benjamin, William H. Eliza B. Frances. I
think
that John T. born 1786 Married Susanna P. Smith b. 1790 died 2-6-1854.
there children Nancy Coleman, Sally Crowder, Thomas, Christopher,
Peters. Margaret, William.
How I came up with this is, first with the attachments I am sending
Susanna witness to Thomas Gayle Revolutionary war,
Also in Susanna will

http://ftp.rootsweb.ancestry.com/pub/usgenweb/va/charlotte/w...
also the probate

http://ftp.rootsweb.ancestry.com/pub/usgenweb/va/halifax/cen...

These both have the names in them from the attachment I am sending.
I believe that the Robert Gayle SR is father to my Robert D. Gayle b.
1833 TN because Sussanna note she is giving her daughter the land in
TN.
Hope you can make head or tail form this

Linda Grady
