Mr. Hedden,

I saw your post concerning Gazaway's in Georgia. I know that my great grandmother was Bessie A. Gazaway -not sure if it is Gazzaway or Gazaway -although I see a Bessie listed in your information as a child of Mary (?). My great grandmother, Bessie was born March 1858 (her death record says that she was born in SC), and she died here in Augusta (Richmond County) Georgia in February 1940. She was married to my great grandfather James Patrick Gleason, from Ireland. I am wondering if she is the same Bessie listed in your post? If so, can you provide me information on her parents and siblings? And also, if she is your kin -I can give you information on children and grandchildren of Bessie (my great grandmother. Thank you very much, Patricia Gleason Morris

Try searching for Gageway in the 1880 census, I saw that put in the list like that, and remember thinking it should say Yazenwicz, I even wrote it down and applied for a job doing the transcribing of those handwritten notes, any how, I am positive I saw Gageway and it might be your Gazaway.

Jan: I wrote a rather long e-mail this A. M. but, when I tried to send it,it was returned unsent and said "message failure". Just now, I tried again and it failed. ??? My address is dmclark0407@yahoo.com. Sometimes, when this happens, I have the person contact me then I send a reply. This seems to get around the problem.

I don't know a lot about the George's, either, as I have been researching mainly Jesse and "Fannie" and that line.Is there some particular info you need? Are you searching from Jesse and Nancy on down or going further back? It all gets rather confusing. Several years ago I searched for, and found, John Riley Gazaway only to find out it wasn't my grt grandfather but a nephew. (William's son, who was named for my grt grandfather.) There is also at least one other John Riley. This family was big on naming children for family, as I even did. To add to that, they had LARGE families for the most part.
As for Huffman, I think I have heard of him but haven't read his book. How is he connected? Or, is he? Can his book still be obtained? The book I have was compiled by Katherine DeWitt Gazaway. I gave you my e-mail because I tend to "carry on." LOL I write long letters and I don't think this is the place for that unless it is pertinent to my or someone else's search efforts. So, later. Donna

Are you refering to the book by Wm Huffman? My mother-in-law gave me a copy back in 2002. We have been to Utopia, once for a reunion and another time when Nancy Reel George Gazaway's stone was dedicated by the DRT. I live in the Dallas-Ft. Worth area of Texas. Where do you live? You can email me directly at copperpenny1@hotmail.com (that's a number one). I have very little info on the George family.

Wow: That was a quick response! Thanks. I am familiar with the Reel and George names. Past Wm W and Mary Ann I am not familiar with the names. What is it you need to know? Can I ask you where you live? I see from your profile that you live in Texas but Texas covers a LOT of territory! I ask mainly because I recently visited Nancy Reel George's grave site and you might want to visit. If I remember rightly, the name Hezekiah was also on her stone. And, I think Wm and Mary Ann were buried at the same site. They are buried in Utopia, Texas. I am sorry if I sound uncertain. There were a number of other Georges's as well. All of my info is at home and I am currently at the local library. I found Nancy's grave when I was cemetery hopping, looking for family, and took pictures of all the graves that I thought to be family. Unfortunately, when they were processed some got mixed up. I need to re-visit those cemeteries and make sure I have them sorted into the right order. I have started a album with them. Also, a cousin wrote a book on the genealogy of the family from Jesse down. Again, the info is at home. If we share any personal info (like where we live) I would rather do it via a personal e-mail address not here. I am very interested in finding the graves of my grt grandparents-John Riley and Lucy-but have had no luck so far. As for Jesse and Susan, I believe they may be buried in Denton, above Dallas. Let me know what is it you need. The book I have, if my cousin has more and you can obtain a copy, may help. I am willing to help in any way I can and welcome all the help I can get. Thanks, Donna

W. and Mary Ann George Gazaway. Wm's parents were Jesse and Susan Francis Gazaway and Mary Ann's parents wre Hezekiah and Nancy Reel George.

My grandmother was Lucy Sloan (although there are variations on how her first name was spelled.) Please let me know how you are connected and we will go from there. Thank you.
Donna

Glad you found a copy of the book....My brother, sister , and I are doing research trying to go back from where William (Jesse's father)was in Alabama in the early 1800's. We found dome pretty good records in the Huntsville, Alabama court house. I think before Georgia they were in South Carolina, North Carolina, and possibly Virginia....my sister volunteers at a genealogy library, so she has access to several records.....If you find any new information, I would appreciate your sharing it with us....Thanks

Gazaway/Gasaway YDNA project update

Update to the Y-DNA Gazaway/Gasaway surname project. Currently there are 5 participants and we have received test results of 4.
Results and pedigrees can be checked out at http://www.familytreedna.com/public/gazaway-gasaway/default....

Y-Chromosome DNA is passed from father to son down through the generations just as surnames are passed from father to son. Only men inherit the Y-chromosome, therefore only men with the Gazaway or Gasaway surnames (or variant spellings) can be participants in the Gazaway/Gasaway Y-chromosome DNA Family Reconstruction Project. In other words, the Y-Chromosome DNA samples can only be provided by males who HAVE the GAZAWAY/ Gasaway Surnames or similar spellings.

The method of obtaining the DNA cells is simple and painless and doesn't involve any drawing of blood. The type of DNA that is analyzed for genealogical purposes doesn't provide any data about medical conditions. The DNA testing company sends a small tube with Q-tip-like swabs to each participant. All that needs to be done is to swab the inside of the cheek to collect some cells, replace the swabs in the tube and mail it back to the company. In about 9 weeks the company informs the participants about the results and lets them know if their score matches anyone else in the DNA database.

The link below can be used by a Gazaway or Gasaway male who might wish to submit his name, mailing address, e-mail address, etc. to order a DNA sample kit to be mailed to him and join the Gazaway/Gasaway DNA Project.
http://www.familytreedna.com/surname_join.aspx?code=A66759

Y-chromosome DNA testing is enhancing traditional genealogical research. DNA testing is NOT intended to be a "stand-alone method" of learning about your ancestry. However, it can be of great assistance in furthering your traditional research, especially when your DNA marker scores match the marker scores of another man who shares your surname. It may give you the clue you've been searching for to narrow down the place of origin of your early ancestors.

The Gazaway/Gasaway DNA Project has been formed to further genealogical research through the use of DNA analysis. If you know a Gazaway/Gasaway male relative who would consider participating, please contact me for additional information about how to join the project, etc.

All Gazaway and Gasaway males are invited to join.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Best wishes,

Billy Allison
Administrator, GAZAWAY/GASAWAY DNA Project
akbatj at gmail.com

Gary: While I am thinking about it, my grt grt grt grandfather (Jesse's dad) was William. William was married to a Mary Polly Wagoner. I will have to research further to find where they were born or married. As for George Washington, his name is familiar. I think I have found research on him. Searching this family isn't easy, to say the least. I thought, years ago, I had the right John Riley only to find he wasn't. He is related but wasn't the one I was looking for. They reapeated many family names. I think even more so than other families. Later

Gary: I hope I am not repeating myself. I just started a letter to you and then it simply went away. Maybe it already got posted. Anyway, thanks for getting back to me. I will need more info in order to make a connection to you. My gr gr grandfather is Jesse (note spelling) Gazaway. John Riley, his 5th child, is my grt grandfather. My Jesse was married to Susan Frances Jones. He was born in Ala. She in Ky and most of the kids (10) were born in Ill. One in Mo., two (twins) in Tx. Jesse later married Nancy Reel and they had 3 more children. The only George (George Nolan) was produced of this union. I do have connections (in one way or another) to Georgia, Ala., Illi., Ky., Mo. and who knows where. They sure got around!! And, course, the older generation went by Gassaway. Look for Col Nicolas Gassaway.
you will connect him way back to England. I think he is related to me and you may connect to him. He is not hard to find. A lot of info on him. Good luck. I look forward to hearing more from you. Donna
