James T. Gean (born abt 1798) in the post above is not who you are looking for. For more info on your line look at

http://www.gean-ealogy.com/genealogy/getperson.php?personID=...

Your William is the son of William S. Gean and grandson of Wiley Jean of Bedford Co., TN. Current DNA testing does indicate that Wiley & James T. Gean were at least cousins, but we need more tests by Gean/Jean descendants to learn more.

Hi Howard. I have read your e.mails with great interest. I didnt know about the two brothers falling out and the dropping of the E. Yes I am talking about John Jeans b.1640 and Rebecca his wife. I am busy at the moment sorting all my bits of paper out and writing it all down in a book. I hope at some stage to visit Stalbridge to see the headstones in the Parish Church which I understand is St. Marys. My great Aunt Minnie Jane Jeans was buried there in 1975 and seems to be in a grave with her mother and father James and Mary Ann Jeans. These are my G.Grandfather and G.Grandmother. James d.1914 age 77 and
Mary Ann d.1908 age 71. I have made notes of all your e.mails which you have exchange with other people and it
has made things easier to work out. I assume that a lot of
these people are in American. I dont have any American
connexions as far as I know. Hope we can keep intouch.
Regards M.

In Regards to the france links Judging from a lot of the info i have up todate. i belive the Jeans Family came to England during the conquest in 1066 under the name of Jean or Genn and most of the surnames derive from the names Johannes,John,Jacob,Judah and it was not long after the conquest that they were begining to be recorded as a surname most of them in England drived from the name John
(Origin Hebrew) Gracious; God's grace.French Jean, meaning "God is gracious JEAN: A derivative of Anglo-Norman French Jehan, meaning "God is gracious." most come up with the same meaning and origin JAN: Compare with feminine Jan.
Middle English form of English John, meaning "God is gracious."
Low German short form of Latin Johan, meaning "God is gracious." JAYNE: Variant spelling of English Jane , meaning "God is gracious."JEANE: Variant spelling of Scottish Jean , meaning "God is gracious
In the Bible Johannes the Baptist and Jesus are Cousins
also linked to all the names and the name Jacob JUDAH: Anglicized form of Hebrew Yehuwdah, meaning "praised." In the bible, this is the name of many characters, including the fourth son of Jacob and Leah, the founder of one of the twelve tribes of Israel. the surname Jeans Derives from all of them and it began with the name Jacob and Judah most of the surnames and first name have biblical links and are from Judean royal dynasty in 9th century BC first names become surnames and also some surnames were taken from the towns they were born in or owned .
Hi M
do you know about the name change that took place because of 2 brother's falling out with each other?. it's belived the one brother droped the E on the end name of Jeanes his line then became Jeans. are you also aware of this?. i do have some records stored on the male line of Samuel Jeans but mostly since i found out my father's side was infact Seymour. i havnt spent much time on the male line of Jeans. and yes ive also seen the Stalbridge report on Protestation Returns dated 1641. are you talking about the John whom married Rebecca In 1662 ? Also in all French-speaking countries, Jean is a male name derived from the Old French Jehan Related names male: John, Sean, Yann, Juan, Johan, Jan,Gene.also checkout the names Jean Calvin,John Calvin , the Jean surname was changed to JEANE by decendants of PRESTON CALVIN JEAN the Jean surname was changed to JEANE. Some of them also added an "s" to the name...H

Thanks for getting back to me so quickley. Pleased to know we are members of the same family. I wonder if you have found out who the parents of the first John Jeans (b.1640) were? I see on the Stalbridge Protestation Returns dated 1641, there are two Jeans spelt our way. 1.Elna Thun(?) and
2.Thomas. Could either of these men be the father and could the first man's name be Nathaniel? Also, could you tell me a bit more about the French connection? My brother and my cousins are very interested too. My brother has a Grandfather clock made by John Hancock of Yeovil about 1760 which is always passed to the eldest son. It was made around the time our direct descentant John Jeans b.1739 married Hannah Sargent. The date of the marriage 4th January 1761 and took place in Stalbridge. Hope this proves of interest to you. Look forward to hearing from you.M

Some Southern Jean families are descended from the Cornwall England Jane family

Recent dna testing reveals that some of the Jean/Jane family from TN, SC, NC and KY are descended from the same ancestor as the Jane family of St Cleer, Cornwall.

Those matching this family from Cornwall are descended from:

1)Wiley Jean, of Bedford County, TN (born NC)

2)James Thomas Gean (originally from Lincoln County, TN but moved to Wayne County)

3)Philip Geane/Jean of Chatham County, NC

4)Burrell Jane/Jean of Bute County NC - then to South Carolina

5) Unk Jean of Montgomery/Floyd County, KY.

The family from St. Cleer didn't immigrate to the US until the 1860's. Our common ancestor would be much earlier, as we can document all of the above men for a long time before that. We know Burrell, and Sherod were in Bute County, NC before and during the Revolution and Philip was in Chatham by 1772.

The Name Jeans comes from the name John,Jen Jaynes Jane Jeans Jeanes ...so on and so on..

JOHN
Gender: Masculine
Usage: English, Biblical
Pronounced: JAHN
English form of Johannes, which was the Latin form of the Greek name Éùáííçò (Ioannes), itself derived from the Hebrew name Yochanan meaning "YAHWEH is gracious". This name owes its consistent popularity to two New Testament characters, both highly revered as saints. The first was John the Baptist, the forerunner of Jesus Christ and a victim of beheading by Herod Antipas. The second was the apostle John, also supposedly the author of the fourth Gospel and Revelation. The name has been borne by 23 popes, as well as kings of England, Hungary, Poland, Portugal and France. It was also borne by the poet John Milton and the philosopher John Locke.

YAHWEH
Gender: Masculine
Usage: Theology
Pronounced: YAH-wah
A name of the Hebrew God, represented in Hebrew by the tetragrammaton ("four letters") Yod He Waw He, transliterated into Roman script Y H W H. Because it was considered blasphemous to utter the name of God it was only written and never spoken. This resulted in the original pronunciation being lost. The name may have originally been derived from the old Semitic root hwy meaning "to be" or "to become".

SEYMOUR

Gender: Masculine
Usage: English
Pronounced: SEE-mor
From a Norman surname which originally belonged to a person coming from the French town of Saint Maur (which means "Saint MAURUS").

MAURUS
Gender: Masculine
Usage: Ancient Roman
Roman name which meant "dark skinned" in Latin. This was the name of numerous early saints, most notably a follower of Saint Benedict

Did you submit your DNA to different names? I guess what I am asking is were you alaready suspicious that you weren't a Jeans, but a Seymore...or was that a surprise?

I guess I am asking because there are some Jeans who married in to the Seymore family and it would seem possible that a descendant of that line might have DNA from both lines. At least if I am understanding the DNA correctly, and of course it is my understanding that it would be different for females than males, and the further the generations apart the less likely. (I guess)

Is there another company doing Jeans DNA testing already?

Sorry for so many questions, but this is still kind of new to me and I am trying to understand it all.

Thanks,
Mel

I was recently in contact with someone about Lloyd. He is from Lafayette Co., MS right? If so, I can probably help you.

You can find family trees/group sheets for his ancestors William Polk Gean & Albert Gean by becoming a member of gean-ealogy.com go to

http://www.gean-ealogy.com/genealogy/index.htm

There is no fee to join, and there are many more Gean families on the site if anyone else is interested, or would like to add their Gean tree.

Hope to hear from you soon James - several group members (including myself) are from the Lafayette Co., MS line too.

Bird Gean was my gggrandfather. He was the father of J.B. Gean who was the father of my grandmother Emma Gean Rushing. Emma was the child of J.B. Gean's lst marriage to Eliza Emma Rhoden. So my grandmother was a Rhoden. She lived with Simpson Roden Family for 5 years after her mother passed away and until Grandfather Gean remarried Mary Gordon. Does this tie in with your family?

My mother's grandmother (so my great grandmother) was Vitura Ann, last name unknown, who married William Earl Britt. He was born c1856 and died (I think) in 1937. Vitura Ann was called "Tura", according to her tombstone. They lived at Three Creeks near Junction City, Union County, AR. My grandmother was Fannie Mae Britt (married William Robert Risinger). They lived in Junction City when my mother Nancy was born in 1924. They later lived for many years in ElDorado, where both died and were buried. I believe that my grandmother had only sisters, two of whom also lived in ElDorado. Nannie Belle Britt married ? Cobb. (I don't know his first name but can get it.) Another sister was Pearl Britt, who married Thomas Byrd. I remember visiting with the McCorveys. I remember hearing a funny story about Lon McCorvey and a snake told when I was a child. I have sent you a message by e-mail but am also sending the information via the Ancestry.com website in case the other doesn't get through. Please contact me at <kincanon@gte.net> to share more info.

I do not have a Tura Ann Gean in my files.
However, I have seen other Gean's in Union County
Arkansas as I have researched the family.
I have not been able to establish any connection
with Bird Gean. However, since I do not know
who his siblings or parents were, it is entirely
possible that the Union County Gean's are kin
to the Jefferson County family. Good luck in
your search.
Ann Gunn Clark

Bird Gean

Bird Gean was my gggrandfather also, through his son
David Edward Gean, father of Frances (Fannie)
Graham Gean, my grandmother. I only recently discovered that Bird's first
name could have been John. I do know that Bird Gean
married Sarah Ann Brantley in 1842 in Chatham Co., NC, and
they came to Arkansas in the 1850's and got a land grant
in Jefferson Co, AR. I have a tombstone rubbing of Sarah
Ann Brantley Gean grave at the old Rhoden Springs Cemetery
on the Jefferson/Grant Co. line in Arkansas. She died May 10, 1883.
I do not know when Bird died or where he is buried.
I have been looking for the parents and/or siblings of Bird Gean
to no avail for years now. He came from Chatham Co., NC, and a lot
of Gean (Jean) families were there, but so far, I have been unable to
find any trace of Bird until he married Sarah. According to the article,
which I am sure you have read, in the Grant County Museum about John
Brantley Gean, it is stated that Bird Gean's father was William Gean,
and that he had a first wife named Martha Seymour, whom he married in 1834.
Any info you can provide would be appreciated.
Ann Clark
