Hi. My father was William P Gearhiser, his father was Jacob (married Pearl Henry), and his father was Jacob, who I believe was one of the sons of the Jacob who married Barbara Rentz. (I'm working from memory here.) I have an extra copy of a family tree that was worked up about 20 years ago by some Gearhisers in Kansas, if you'd like a copy. One thing I've discovered in the last 6 months or so, to my sorrow, is that most of the Gearhisers on the internet come from a different branch of the family--somebody who at best would have been the original Jacob's brother. I believe his name was Zediah, or something similar. I'll stop writing at this point, since I notice that it's been 7 years since you posted anything to this list.

Becky,

My name is Susan (Gearhiser) Hartfiel. I'm originally from Delaware County, OH, and am currently researching the family history, too. I am descended from Jakob Gearhiser and Barbara Rentz. Alternate spellings I've seen for this generation are Gaerheiser and Garhisser. More specifically, I'm descended from Jakob and Barbara's son John Frederick Gearhiser (alt spelling Gerheiser), and Mary (Mae) Elenor Kreider. John and Mae would be my great-great grandparents.

I have much more info about the family, but, unfortunately, do not have the software to enter it in. Most of my problems regarding the research of our family tree come from the ever-changing spelling of the name.

What spellings have you come across for our family in Germany? My family's records show the Gearhisers originating in Baden-Wurtemburg, Germany.

My personal internet research has provided me with the name of Johann (John) Georg Michael Gerhaeusser (B. 10-18-1779) as the father of Jakob, the first Gearhiser in America. Does this agree with what you have?

I would appreciate any info that you have before Jakob and Barbara. Which of Jakob and Barbara's kids are you descended from?

I anticipate buying the genealogy software for this sort of stuff. Once I get my act together, I will e-mail you more info.

Let me know if you need more info,

Susan Gearhiser Hartfiel
