Phebe Gedney & Daniel Gedney of Erie County NY

I am trying to identify the parents/family of my g-g grandfather, Daniel B. Gedney, who was born about 1842 in NY. Daniel Gedney married Alice Louise Macomber in 1866 in Ohio and died in 1895 in Ohio.

In the 1850 census, there is a Daniel B Gedney living in Eden, Erie, NY -- whose mother (presumed) is Phebe Barney, age 45. The stepfather (presumed) is a George Barney. I've found a rootsweb tree that shows that George Barney married a Phebe Gedney about 1849 -- and that they lived in Erie County NY.

The 1840 census doesn't record a Gedney (or Gidney) household in Erie County, NY.

In the 1860 census, this family, George & Phebe Barney with Daniel Gedney, are living in North Collins, Erie, NY.

In the 1870 census, George and Phebe Barney are living in Eden, Erie, NY -- and Daniel Gedney is no longer living with them (he is married and living in Ohio). I believe that this Phebe Gedney Barney died between 1870 and the 1880 likely in Eden Twp, Erie County, NY.

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Harold was my father who was born in PA, but grew up in VA.
His father was Wilbert Walker, who was born in NY, but lived in PA with Sylvester and Rhoda Walker in the 20's (this was not his parents)
Wilbert married Mamie Hall and had two children. After they divorced in the late 30's, Wilbert remarried a women named Margret and had 3 more children.
Wilbert and Margret are both buried in PA.
That is really all I know about the Walker side of my family.

I have John with Mary Bartholomew, Eleazer(I) with Elizabeth Turner, Eleazer(II)with Mary Ann Mott. My line then goes to James to Caleb to Phebe who married Job Purdy.

Clarence Fellows Gedney

I'm looking for any info on Clarence Fellows Gedney, he was born in Cali. in 1858 to James E. Gedney and Emma H. Fellows. He married Eliza Catherine Switzer in 1884, they were divorced after having 2 kids, Edgar Daniel (died at age 2) and Mary Dell (my gggrandmother). After that the rest is speculation....the family rumor is that Clarence Fellows Gedney, shot or killed a man and fled to Mexico. We actually do know he was in Mexico, but not sure about the murder.

He did marry a woman in Mexico, I don't know her name. But they had a daughter named, Emma, who married an Ernest Fernadez.

Hello.very new to this -saw your posting re Bispham connection-my great gfthr-charles(Burnham?)Bispham had at least two bros. and one sister called'Susie'.He was born abt 1890- 1900 and died in mid1950s.Family 'gossip' says one brother went to America one to Canada.Their parents were thought to be from Fleetwood/lytham/bispham area.No trace of the fathers name on certs.cotton connection/weaving.perhaps the great great Bispham connection travelled or his parents did and returned to the uk?-All leads welcome please.sue.

Could Ruth have possibly been born in California? I've been tracing my Gidney/Gedney lines and I recently found a Clarence Egaston Gidney married to Mabel. They had a daughter named Ruth and two sons, Albert and Wesley. The 1920 US census has them all living in Imperial County, California. Ruth's age is stated as 5 years old. Clarence is the son of Omar Alonzo Gidney. Clarence was born in Brantford Twp., Brant Co., Ontario. He and Mabel, his brother, Charles and his wife and children, Omar and his wife all moved to Vancouver, British Columbia sometime before 1911 and then moved on to the Los Angeles area of California after that.

If this is indeed your Ruth I have more on Clarence and his siblings and ancestors.

Bethia and Andrew Mansfield had three kids before 1658 (another five being recorded in Lynn records before Bethia died and Andrew remarried in 1673). That would make her a contemporary of Bartholomew, not his daughter. I've seen both online - the daughter of Bart being b. 1672 or so, his sister b. 27 Oct 1629. However, I can't find a reference to the sister in anything resembling a reliable source. It's an odd name, and I imagine Bart is well documented, so I can see Bethia Mansfield being related, but I'm not going to take the Ancestral File's word on that :-)

Yes. It seems strange there isn't a David Hallett in N.B., unless he returned to NY or never left there when his son Gidney did - shortly after the Loyalists moved to N.B..

Perhaps he is William David Hallett. There are many William Halletts in NY, though few in N.B.

I'm in the process of trying to connect as many surnames as I can to the Gidney and Hallett families of Queens Co. and Kings Co., N.B. I know they are probably descended from William Hallett and Elizabeth Fones of Newtown, NY, ancestors of most of the Halletts in Carleton and surrounding counties.

My brother John Gedney Sr.manuplitated my mother so she changed her will and left him in charge her health(mental) was not the best and he was able to get her to do anything when it came to me...she cut me out and left a very large estate to be divided with my younger brother william...they never had the decency to call me when she was on her death bed (all though I had spoken with her about 2 weeks before she was hospitalized..they called me and said she was dead..and that the funeral was in 3 days...as i was preparing to leave for the funeral my husband had a heart attack and i was forced to cancel my plans....they will not give me articles of mine that were left in her home..I had to sue the estate..and my brother fought to keep everything my attorney classified him as eveil....he lied in depositions that were taken>now he doesn't have the guts to face me ...won't return my call etc...A large reception was held at a country club after the funeral..I was never invited or informed..his actions are deplorable...and disgusting....i feel i deserve an explaination for his actions....it's clear money is everything to him.....BC

I am looking for information on Mary Gedney/Gidney. She was born in New York between 1835-40. She was married, I think to a Charles Gedney/Gidney and he died around 1865 she then married Charles Gamin/Gammon. Charles Gamin/Gammon died in 1869. Mary took her children with her first husband and her son with Charles Gamin/Gammon to Minnesota. She was listed in the 1880 census in Akron, Erie, New York with her sons Charles and Eddie Gidney her name is spelled Gamin.
She left all of Charles Gamin/Gammon's children in New York with their mother's relatives(seven in all)

I am specifically trying to find information on his daughter Elizabeth Gedney or Gidney of Newtown, Suffolk Co., NY, who married 19 Jun 1783 in Jamaica, Queens Co., Long Island, New York, David Hallett of Hell Gate, Queens Co., Long Island. I would like to know if anyone knows the parents of David Hallet(t).

Also, her sister, Martha Gedney of Newtown married the same date, same place, Nathaniel Moore of Newtown.

Re-Joseph Ogden,1667-1715?17.His wife was Mary Miller.They had 3 children,(1)Joseph,died after 1740,(2)Gloriana,Married Polycarpus Nelson,Died before 18 Jan 1718.Polycarpus married 2nd 18 Jan 1718,Ruth GEdney.(3)Mary born 1698,died 1772,married John Gedney.John Gedney and Mary Ogden had 9 children,one of whom was Mary,born about 1722 who married James Haynes(Haines?.
I am a decendant of Joseph Ogdens brother,Richard.Both were sons of John Ogden "Of Rye" and Judith Budd.

Hello Charles, It's great to find another descendent of James.

I haven't found anything further back than James and Matilda. They were married in Michigan in 1860. Censuses in Canada do not have much information but head of household before 1870. Plus the images are hard to find online. I have a contact in Canada who has been very helpful to me with other family lines. Email me and I we can trade info. I have no information on Arthur's descendents. I can give you much on Elmer's.

Another of the First Settlers of Grout Township Has Passed Away

Another of the few remaining early settlers has passed away.
Mrs. Matilda Gedney was born Dec. 10, 1844 and departed this life March 15, 1923 aged 78 years, 3 months and 5 days. Mrs. Gedney spent part of her early life in the Province of Ontario, Canada. She was married to James A. Gedney in 1860 in St. Clair county, Mich. and eight years later came to Gladwin county and settled on the farm in Grout Township where they hewed out a home from the virgin forest.
Mr. and Mrs. Gedney came to Gladwin by way of an old scow up the river from Midland and all the experiences of pioneer life Mrs. Gedney has seen and done her part. Time after time she administered to the necessities of the sick in early days when doctors were not available.
In those days the Grout family was numerous in Grout Township, now none are left, also the Teeple, Howland, Emery, Dickerson, A. B. Foster, Brown, M. T. Mathews,
McNamara, Madil, Lanphear, Chesser and Dow families, of whom only a few are left.
Mrs. Gedney gave her heart to the Lord years ago and has lived a consistent Christian life ever since. She was ready to meet her God and to her there was only a step from this world to where pain and sorrow are no more. She could hear the glad summons, "Come up higher."

Bill, My information is that Daniel Gedney, son of Eleazar III, was born 15 December 1739 in Mamaroneck, Westchester, NY and died 15 December 1790 in Newburgh, Orange co., NY. He married Charlotte Fowler 1759 in Westchester Co., NY, daughter of Samuel Fowler and Charlotte Purdy. She was born 1740 in Westchester County, NY and died 11 February 1791 in Newburgh, Orange Co. NY.

Charlotte Purdy's parents were Samuel Purdy and Clorinda (Penelope) Strang; her grandparents Joseph Purdy and Elizabeth. I am a Purdy descendant and would be happy to tell you more. Her maternal grandparents were Daniel L'Estrange (Strang) and Charlotte LeMestre. Hope this helps. Beverley

Shannon, I would be very interested in corresponding with you as I, too, am a Gedney descendant. I am particularly interested in Mersey Gedney who married Samuel Sands in Newburgh. Her father was Eleazar (III) who married Rebecca Turner; her great-grandfather (Eleazar I) married Elizabeth Turner. (Were the two Turners related?)

I am confused because you list John Gedney as marrying Mary Mott, whereas I thought he married Sarah Mary Bartholomew? and that Eleazar II married Mary Ann Mott?

I am also a Purdy descendant, but your line is through Samuel and mine is through David. Do you have any Riders, Birdsalls or Dorlands? Looking forward to hearing from you.

I am looking for more iformation on my ancestor Samuel Sands Gidney or Gedney, b. May 1797 in Newburgh, NY, I believe. I have not been able to track down his parents or siblings. Samuel went to North Carolina and married Cynthia Sharpe Wells. They resided in Cleveland, and maybe Rutherford, County.

I know there are a number of Gidneys/Gedneys in Newburgh, and I know there is a Samuel Sands there that married a Gidney woman, so I suspect my Samuel is named for him. Samuel's name is usually spelled Gidney, but I have seen it spelled Gedney, so I thought I should try this forum.

The information you give in your posting does not quite fit with the Gedney Farm Gedneys. That Bartholomew (1844-1902) married Emma Mahoney 1901 Philadelphia. He was a bachelor nearly all of his life. Also Gedney Farms was (& still is) in White Plains.

I'm looking for any descendants of Charles Arthur GEDNEY, sometimes listed as Arthur C. Gedney or Gidney. He was born January 1865 and died sometime after 1930. He was married to Laura M. (last name unknown) in 1893 who I believe may have have died shortly after the birth of their last child, maybe in childbirth. He later married Nora (last name also unknown) abt. 1913. In 1930 he was living with his son, Archie. Archie was maried to a Viola, children unknown. CAG's children from his first marriage to Laura M. were Archie (b. 1896), Lena (b. 1899), Hazel (b. 1903), and Ethel (b. 1908). His children from his second marriage to Nora were Ellouise (b. 1914), Vera (b. 1916) and Mildred (b. 1918).

I too am a descendent of James A. Gedney, but not of Elmer. I am from the Charles Arthur, his brother. Have you been able to trace past James A. Gedney and Matilda Grout? I have them in the US Census all the way back to 1880, but I can't seem to find any information about them or their parents in Canada. Any information you might have would be greatly appreciated.

The Gedney-Clarkes of Massachusetts

I am doing some family research in the West Indies. Specifically, a fellow by the name of Gedney Clarke Bispham. He lived most of his life and died in 1860 in Antigua. I know also that he was baptized in Barbados. I seem to be finding a connection between the Bisphams and a Gedney-Clarke family of Massachusetts, Specifically, Gedney Clarke born about 1711 in Boston (to Bartholomew Gedney-Clarke and Susannah Clarke) and married in 1734 to Mary Fleurian in St. Michael Barbados. They had 10 children. One child John married Sarah Parris. She, in turn, after his death married John Bispham and had one child, Gedney Clarke Bispham. This G. C. Bispham had a son of the same name -- the one that I am studying.
Do these Gedney-Clarkes of Massa chusetts appear to be related to the Gedneys of Salem. I notice a similarity in first names Susannah, Deborah, Bartholomew.
Also, if you are intereseted, I have additional information on this branch of the family.

My problem is that I know the Bisphams in Barbados and Antigua, but I lose track of them after 1860 (for Antigua) and 1873 (for Barbados). I really have no information that would connect with your Bisphams.

My great, great grandfather was Matthias Anderson Gedney, b. 24 Oct 1832 (Patterson, NJ), d. 20 Feb 1905 (Minneapolis, MN) and is the person you seek. I have his direct lineage back fourteen generations to 1552. Please feel free to contact me. The pickle company (same family enterprise) folded recently. Conversely, I seek ancestral information on the Dingee family. Matthias' mother-in-law was Eliza Ann Dingee, b. abt 1812 (NY), d. 9 Jul 1876 (Carmel, NY). Based on your information, one may assume the families intermarried.

There seems to be a lot of info on the early Gedney's (John, Eleazor, Eleazor) but I haven'e seen much about the later Gedney's, as James and Caleb. James (1702-`766) m. Phebe Griffin (Horton) and had 5 children. Caleb (1737-1810) was one of them and m. Alethea Fowler. They had 4 children (Phoebe, Henry, Gilbert, & Caleb). Phoebe m. Job Purdy and this is my line. I would like to know if there are some living relatives out there who could give me some more info about this family. Caleb Gedney is the son of James (Eleazer, Eleazer, John) and married Alethea Fowler. I know they had at least 2 children - Caleb and Phoebe (1764). Phoebe married Job Purdy which is my line. I would like to know more about Caleb, how many children he had (names), what kind of work he did , etc. I was told he had 10 children and I was also told Phoebe and Job had 10 children and the names match so there is a problem here. Please help.

I am trying to discover the parents and ancesters of Phebe Purdy (Jun.17,1764-Nov.13,1834). She married Job Purdy (Jun.18,1761-Aug.13,1819). I believe they lived in Dutchess Co.NY and had about 10 children, Caleb being the oldest. They are buried in the Hortontown Community cemetery outside E. Fishkill, NY.
