In searching for my gr-gr grandfather who came from Germany in 1854 I foung George on the same military roster. My relatives surname was Wendt but when he joined the 9th US Cavalry in May 1855, his name was corrupted to Brant. When he was naturalized in 1870 he changed it again to Brent. Maybe the George T Gehrke who appears on the list "Enlisted Men of the 9th Regiment, US Infantry (Regular Army)" had his surname mis-spelled also as an aunt of my mother married a "Gierke." I just wanted to add this information in case anyone is searching for this Gehrke.
