My e-mail is jrjohnson22@verizon.net. Would love to make a connection on the Gentleman name sometime. It seems that they all moved in different directions. I tried to trace back to Ireland but I had more info than they were able to give me. Apparently, they had a fire and many records were lost.

Janet

Janet,
Thank you for the information you sent. I recieved last weekend but travelled all week and could not respond. Could you send me your direct email so I could write further. I know that I am not related to the Warrensville Heights and Troy line (even though I did live in Cleveland for 6 years), but your spreadsheet that listed the four Frances is of great interest to me. When I get your email I will write more detail as to why.

Re: John Gentleman

Hello all,
Our common surname has a very simple genesis...........at first blush!

It originates in the Stuart (French spellng), or Stewart (Scottish spelling) in the middle ages. Mary, Queen of Scots, was born in the town of my birth and upbringing - Linlithgow, Scotland. She was born, as was her father, King James, in Linlithgow Palace. The enemy at that time were the English. The allies at that time were the French. The Scottish Royal Court of the Stuarts could only speak Norman French, thus Mary's Royal Court consisted of mainly Norman-French people. The head of this Royal Court was known as the 'gentilhomme de la Court Royale'. The 'gentilhomme is the clue. It literally translates into 'The Gentleman of the Royal Court , responsible for the day-to-day running and orderly fashion of the Royal Court. All this while, John Knox was transforming Scotland from a Catholic country into a Protestant one. The Stuart royal dynasty were very much Catholic. It took Knox, a fearsome character, just over a year to accomplish it. Meanwhile Mary's cousin, Queen Elizabeth I of England, was also busily transforming England into a Protestant one, albeit in a slightly different fashion. To this day Scots are mainly Presbyterian, whilst the English are Anglican. Whatever, Mary ended up 'losing her head' (literally) and consequently the throne of Scotland, which ultimately led to the 'Union of the Crowns'. The gentilhomme's melded into local society and anglicised their names to Gentleman. Those who wished to continue pursuing their Catholic faith largely migrated to Ireland (though some returned to France). That's why the surname, whilst still unusual, can be encountered in both Scotland and Ireland.

There are many 'Gentlemans' to be found in London and the the south-east of England - but their genesis is quite different. The majority of these peoples' names can be traced back to the Jewish 'Pale' which prior to WW11, was a geographic enclave including parts of Germany, Poland, Belorussia and the (now) Czech Republic. Their Yiddish names were Gentelmann which was easily anglicised to Gentleman - for those who were fortunate enough to escape the Nazis and seek refuge in England.

Hope I've been of some help.

I'm now resident in Australia and there's a few of us here too!
Julia (and Ray and Steve and all others),
We may have corresponded in the past as I was looking for George and Margaret Gentleman, who travelled on the Lady Russell in 1857 with daughters Julia and Ann from Tralee to the USA. They settled in Delaware, Ohio. This has been a stone wall as I have no other information on George prior to the Lady Russell sailing. I am related through Julia.

Just learned that in the 1870 US Federal Census that George is called John Gentleman, married to Margaret. George is 70 in 1870 and Margaret (Mary?) is 60.

I also have wondered why William Gentleman settled in Delaware, but possibly to be with his father John (which is mentioned on this board in an old post.) This might explain why so many Gentlemans in a small town, far from Ireland.

It may be that I have been looking for George all these years and should have been looking for John!

Would appreciate any replies on the Gentleman's from Ireland and Delaware, Ohio. Happy to share all I have for would like to trace the family back to Ireland.

In advance,

Thank you

Jim

I have been researching Gentleman's family for only a short time. I am interested in Nicolas Gentleman born May 1827 in Ireland, and Mary Garry born July 1839. They had 8 children that I know of. It looks like the emigrated to Canada we think in Ontario and then to Platte Center, Nebraska maybe around 1858. Any information you have would be appreciated.

Yes, I am related to the John A. Gentleman family but it is several cousins back. You are correct in that the mortuary is not owned now by the Gentleman family.

The reason I believe that the Irish came to Canada first is that the fares were less expensiive. Also when they arrived there they would apply for any kind of menial job in order to save up some money. Many were on a type of welfare also.

I have 3 different Irish families that came in through Canada, usually Ottawa. The records are hard to come by as the Canadian Government has access to all records. The names were very common names, i.e. Mary, James, William, etc. as well as most of the surnames so it is almost difficult to tell if you find the right one or not.

I believe my Gentleman family came to Paris, Ontario at some point and from there somehow got into Nebraska, Stearns County. Three of the children, however, were born somewhere in Canada. I just don't seem to be able to find any certificates or any documentation of marriages either.

Kathleen

Hi
The only records I have asked for have been on the othe side of my family, and then I was fortunate to know the Churcch where it took place. I have never been able to determine where they came from.

Why they often came through Cnada? My guess it was easier to get to Canada as bith Ireland and Canada were part of the Britoeh Empire, then it was easier to come inot the US and by pass "offical route". It is just a guess. You may try to Contact Donna Beaupre, she has a number of messages posted. She has stufff on the varies Gentlemans. I am related distantly asa Gentleman and her husband as a Beaupre. Small funny world!!!
Good Luck
Jack
My gg-grandmother was Eliza Gentleman, born 1803, County Kerry. Her children were baptized in the Roman Catholic parish of Kilcornan, in County Limerick. Cecilia, Anne, and Godman Gentleman were sponsors. A William Gentleman was also having children baptized in the same parish in the 1840's. I am also searching for information on this name.

Patricia,

A little more information on Eliza. She married Myles Sheehy and they, and most of their children, immigrated to the U.S.A., through New York City, about 1850. One son, Robert Sheehy, is believed to have gone to Australia. Myles, Eliza, and family lived for a while in the area of Troy, New York, before settling in Iowa. I have exchanged information with another researcher whose ancestor was John Gentleman from County Limerick. He married Mary Walsh and came to the U.S.A. in 1857. He also lived in the Troy, New York area before moving to Ohio. We were not able to connect John and Eliza to one another. Please do keep in touch and if you would like to e-mail me directly my address is, jmcmahan@counsellor.com.

Judy

I would like a picture of the cemetary markers please. I have some info on the Gentleman Family that my mother in law just sent me. Not sure if it helps you or not. Here is what she wrote: How interesting. Of course, you know that Cyril was Jack's dad and I remember visiting his sister Ruth while she lived in Omaha but when her husband passed away she moved to California but don't know the year, to live with her daughter. Colleen would know more about that than I do. I have some, but not much information on all of that. I have more information on Marguerite's side (Dineen) family than on Cyrils. Shawn's middle name is Dineen.

Any iformation you could share with me would be great.
Thanks
Alberta
Yes, I believe Bessie is Elizabeth. The dates for her birthday match those on the 1900 census, which shows the month and year and her Social security death index record. Although I am confused because the 1900 census records show my Robert J. born in Dec 1861 in Canada, with a Mary T., born Dec 1865 in Ireland. married for 13 years which would be around 1887. with 6 children Walter J., Sherman, Elmer, Bessie, Helen, Loretta., but then I see in the 1910 Census her name is Mary B. widowed, with the same children and her birth year as 1867-68. Gosh I am confused. I am not sure about the dates on the Gentleman tombstones they don't seem to match either. Maybe these aren't the same Mary's, yet some how related. Since your Robert J. and Mary were married in 1875 and it looks like mine in 1887, they may not be the same. I know my Elizabeth Gentleman was a niece of John A. Gentleman of the funeral home in Omaha, Nebraska. I remember her daughter (which is my husbands mother) talking of this and her mother's maiden name was Kennedy. I also know that somewhere the O'Malley's were cousins of my Elizabeth. I hope I have all this correct. Anyway I hope this information will be of help anyone. I do not know much about the O' Malley's either, except that my husband's grandmother (which is the above Elizabeth and they called her Bess) purchased a silver tea set from the O'Malleys that says O'M on them and the silver tray has the date 1889 on it. Looks like a wedding set maybe?

Hi, Nancy, My husband's grandmother was Elizabeth M. Gentleman born May 1894. She was born in Nebraska and married Charles W. Peasinger. I believe her parents were Robert J. and Mary B. Gentleman. I was interested in both Robert J. and who his parents were and Mary B., I believe her maiden name was Kennedy, according to her son's Social Security Death Index lists this name. I also believe she was from Limerick according to Census records. I am also curious about the O'Malley's since my husbands grandmother claimed they were her cousins, and I have since inherited some O'Malley pieces. Any information would be appreciated.

Hi, Christine. I don’t have much verifiable information yet regarding my GENTLEMANs, but I’m happy to share my notes with you. Robert J is not in my direct line, but I am trying to make a connection between him and Nicholas GENTLEMAN, my gg-grandfather. Several GENTLEMANs left Canada by the mid 1860’s and settled in Nebraska, so I’m hoping they are related.

I believe Robert J is the son of William and Johanna (SULLIVAN?) GENTLEMAN who immigrated from Ireland to Canada, then settled in Nebraska. Robert married Mary (I have FAGAN, not KENNEDY, but this may not be correct) in 1875 in Omaha. In 1903, Robert was an engineer for the Union Pacific and died of complications (peritonitis) following appendix surgery, leaving a wife and six children. This isn’t my website, but here is a great link to GENTLEMANs and to pictures of their tombstones at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Omaha: http://marx.mine.nu/gentleman_headstones.htm. 1914 Omaha City Directory shows a Mary (wid Robt J) living at 1814 Vinton; also Bessie (clk Hayden Bros), Helen (clk Hayden Bros), and Walt J (mach Paxton & Vierling I(ron) Works). I wonder if Bessie may be your Elizabeth?

I don’t know whether there is an O’MALLEY in the Robert J/Mary B line, but I have an O’MALLEY (O’MALLY) in my direct line. My g-grandfather, William P. GENTLEMAN, married Lizzie/Elizabeth O’MALLEY/O’MALLY on April 26 1893 in Douglas County, Nebraska. They lived in Beatrice, Nebraska, then settled in Omaha. Their son, Arthur Leo GENTLEMAN, was my father’s father. I don’t know anything about my g-grandmother O'MALLEY's family, so if you have any information, that would be great!

Nancy

Hi, Kathleen. Mary Garry Gentleman was my gg-grandmother. My information shows that she and Nicholas Gentleman were married (I didn't know whether in Canada or Ireland) and had several children. Their oldest child is my ggrandfather, William P. Gentleman, who married Elizabeth O'Mally (O. Malley?) in 1893 in Omaha, NE.

William's oldest son, Arthur Leo, married Mary Ellen McDermott. He was a widower who already had a small son, William, with his first wife, Helen Kelly.

Arthur and Mary Ellen's son, Robert Gentleman, was my father.

I believe it is this Nicholas and Mary's tombstones on a "Gentleman Headstone" site (see below) and they are buried at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Omaha. I haven't contacted Karen Marx, the website owner, but I'm sure she has more information that she could share with you.
http://marx.mine.nu/gentleman_headstones.htm

I would love to know more about these ancestors, especially their life in Ireland. This is all I know--and I am still gathering the documentation to verify these few facts. I'm sad that Mary Garry may have had a difficult time, being separated from her family--immigrating to a foreign land is almost unthinkable, isn't it?

Please write and tell me how you are related to Mary Garry. It sounds like we may be kindred cousins!

Nancy

Jack, thanks for the info. It sounds like your Gentleman's came over much earlier than mine--mine came to NE via Canada in the 1870's; not sure when they left IRE.

Do you know if it was typical for Irish immigrants to take the Canada route first, and why they may have done so? It seems that many of them did this, but I don't know why.

Have you had any experience obtaining records from Ireland? Is it difficult? It seems like it makes a difference whether our ancestors were Catholics (mine) or Protestants. I will be researching the Canadian info to see which county I need to go to in IRE. I don't know whether it is Kerry or Limerick or another county, but when I noticed the Gentleman name in the post, I had to respond. Thanks again. Nancy

I'm not certain that I have the right connections, but my current findings are that I too am related to Robert Gentleman and Mary McFarlane by way of their son Thomas Gentleman born 06 Jul 1810 - deceased 27 Oct 1890 Parish of Tillicoultry age 83. His siblings(I think)include James DOB 18 Jul 1805, William DOB 27 Jan 1808, Alexander DOB22 Jun 1812, John DOB 25 Apr 1815 and Mary DOB 06 May 1819.
Thomas (my relation) married Janet Russel 31 Dec 1857. They had four children Robert, Janet Walker, William Russel Gentleman (my grandfather DOB 18 Dec 1863) and Mary Helen. William Russel married Annie Cowan McNaughtan.....they had five children.......my dad being one of them. William Donald Gentleman. Do you think this is the right connection? Would love to hear more from you if you think it is!!
Glenda Gentleman

Seeking Geroge Gentleman

I am seeking information on the family of George Gentleman (b 1807) who with wife Mary (Margaret?) (B 1811) and daughters Ann (b 1844) and Julia (Mary?) (1838) travelled on the Lady Russell in 1857 to America and settled in Delaware, Ohio. Mary maiden name may have been Evans. I believe this Julia is my GGGrandmother and I am trying to extend the family tree to the old country. Will share all that i have. Please feel free to contact me directly at shellmarketer@yahoo.com

Hello Katherine
I am happy to share what little I have on the Gentleman families. We are at our second home until Sunday night (Hilton Head Island, SC) and my info is at our other home in Clemson, SC. I do have some Gentleman relatives from County Kerry (?Lixnaw). They then went to Glasgow, Halifax, NS, Montrose, Mich, Monmouth County, NJ and finally to Newburyport, Mass. After 10 years of searching, a year ago, I found the family of one of my gmother's sisters. We had a reunion in San Fran about a year ago and one of the cousins gave me this handwritten account of these County Kerry relatives. I almost fell over--never had any idea that I had Irish ancestors!
I need to go to a LDS Church library and see if I can tie these families together. Some of the other names in my line from Kerry are Fitzmaurice, Goodman, Beaxley/Beasley, Pierce and maybe Bovenizer. (A German Palatine--they came from Germany to Ireland--late 1700 or 1800's I think.
There is a researcher from County Kerry (for fee) and she may be able to give you a teensy tidbit for free! I will send you her address--she has a website also.
I have a new e-mail address--ruppg@bellsouth.net This machine is still on Earthlink--they are supposed to be forwarding my messages to the new address. Oh well. I will write back next week.
Sincerely
June Rupp

My Grandfather's name was also William Gentleman (William Reed Gentleman)probably born around 1875. He had an older sister Catherine born in Scotland; he was born in the USA. His father's name was also William Gentleman, possibly William McGregor Gentleman. His mother's name was Elizabeth. I have been told there is still family relations living in Paisley Scotland.

Are we related?
