siblings Dicie/Dicey and her twin Dorcey, William and Gillie, born to Martin

I am looking for info on William, twin sisters Dorcey and Dicie (or Dicey) and Gillie, the children of Martin (desc. from Blackston, Nicholas III, Nicholas II and I). The Gentry Family in America Book has minimal info on them. Does anyone know whatever happened to them, their mother's name, or how I can verify Martin's death? I have him in the gold rush in California's first census and a transcription of the letter he sent to William about that time, but find no record of his death. Dicie is my ggg grandmother. I am also looking for the names of the children she bore to William Ring, siblings of my gg grandmother Mary Ring and her brother Jeb. Dicie died 31 Jan 1867 in Tell, TX.

Information Request Florence 1910-1958 and Mary Beth Gentry 1924-1967

I am looking for any information abour my paternal grandmother.

She died in August 1958 and her parents were listed as Elizabeth Keller Gentry and Robert Gentry of Wichita Falls, Texas.

At the time of her death her husband was listed as Ernest Friedli. She had one living child, my father, James Allen Smith, Jr. born in 1926 in Wichita Falls. She had 3 infant daughters who all died in the 1920's and 1930 and her first husband died in 1930. She was married several times that I can find after the death of her first husband in 1930.

Her sister listed in her obit, possibly a half sister with the same mother and a different father was Mary Beth Gentry Stockton Sinclair. Her first husband was Hugh Gene Stockton and she had 2 children, Donna Ann Stockton Coskey 12/11/1945-? and Hugh Gene Stockton Jr. 11/28/1941-?.

These 2 children would be first cousins to my father and I am hoping that if they are living they could help me answer some questions about my grandmother.
Some General Questions I need Assistance with

I'm a fairly new member to ancestry.com, and have several questions related to the member board(s), Gentry in particular. I hope I don't stop on toes by asking.

1. Who is allowed access to the board? Public, personal, and/or free people?

2. Why are so many trees listed as "personal"? Why do they do this? Are they afraid to share?

3. There are several websites re: Gentry outside this one (Gentry Joural, Gentry Genealogy, etc.?) Why are there more than one, and what is the purpose of having separate ones? What is recommended, and which are used for what?

4. Why do questions stay up on the board for so many years? Back to 2000.

5. Is there any way we can categorize questions. Some people have the same "Nicholas" type questions, some are specific, some are just beginning. Can we group them; I would be will to help. Or have pop-up thread categories (i.e., Nicholas, headstones, documents, etc, etc., general)

6. I noticed some people send in links to grave markers, documents, etc. (i.e., tfor2) Is there a way we can "archive" these? I may not be interested now, but someone might be later. Can I help with this? Can we have a Gentry archive?

7. If I have new Gentry photos, etc., should I notify people on the board, or let them go look for Gentry photos? I made a note yesterday about a couple photos on my tree, but I'm not sure the best way to relate this information.

8. Okay. I get the feeling there are several groups or factions within the board with differing opinions. Maybe I'm reading to much into things. Are there difference opinions about genealogy that I don't understand, being rather new to the process.

9. Any recommendations on the best way to research, and what is considered "validation" of a person.

Basically, I would like to figure out a way to keep "repetitive information and questions", and to "archive" information people are nice enough to send in, even when they aren't related. I don't know if this website has this capability.

If you would rather respond personally, my email is: rpqc@cox.net.

Thanks, Pam (I've never used a message board, and am trying to get the grasp of this one).

John Gentry Fister

Hello from Ireland,

I am trying to locate the family of John Gentry Fister who fought with US forces in Algeria and Italy during WWII. He was born between 1900-1923 but most likely after 1915. I have been unable to trace him in the USA 1910, 1920 and 1930 census returns.

It is possible that he was born outside the USA and emigrated to the US as a child. I wonder if anyone in this group would have him in a family tree, or be aware of families that used "Gentry" as a middle name? I have found a few families in Suffolk England where "Gentry" has been used as a middle name. But I am looking for a Fister / Gentry connection. I would appreciate any information.

Many thanks,
Niall Foley
Dublin, Ireland.

Henry was a photographer and living in Lambeth, Surrey in 1871 shortly before his marriage that July to Emily BOND of Rivenhall, Essex.

Emily, Henry's wife, was a witness at a family wedding in Rivenhall in 1874, but Henry seems to have left her shortly after 1871 and married someone else -- he pops up in Wales in 1872 (just a year after his marriage to Emily) at which point he married Marian POWELL. Henry and Marian settled in Hackney, London after a few years in Wales, and raised a family of six children: Lilian Annie, Harry Frederick, Golden Samuel, Cecil, Claude and Sidney.

Emily, meanwhile, disappears from all records only to turn up again in 1914 when she died in Essex. I haven't been able to locate her on the 1881, 1891 or 1901 censuses, but in 1881 Emily's widowed mother has two young boys living at her household: Henry T. (Thomas) GENTRY, aged 9, and William GENTRY, aged 6 months. Henry is enumerated as her nephew and William as her grandson. Both were shown as having been born in Rivenhall. I can't find William's birth certificate at all.

Henry Thomas went on to work for Adnams Brewery in Wembley and married. William was living with his aunt and uncle, Emily's sister and her husband, in 1891 and then disappears from the records; a number of possibilities died in the late 1890s and early 1900s.

Does anyone recognise either family of Henry GENTRY of Bocking?

Calling all Gentry's!
My name is Bobbi Gentry Meyer, I am researching all lines of the Gentry family, currently looking for all links and ties with Blackston Gentry who married Mary Bunch and Nancy Hough. This is my line. Though I have a lot of information I am still looking for more, especially photo's. Would love to hear from anyone connected to this line - as well as others. I am only looking for information that you can verify. Would also like website addresses to your family information or other sites you have come across. Please e-mail me directly at BMeyer4667@aol.com.
My family line goes like this: Samuel - Nicholas I - Nicholas II - Nicholas III - Blackston - Garland - William "Bill" - Hiram Newton - William "Glenn" - Bobby Dean - and ME!
Thank you for your help.
Hugs to all cousins!
Bobbi

Info on my project, "We are Nicholas Gentry "The Immigrant" tree

Hi all,
I wanted to 'briefly' discuss a family tree project I am developing; a tree I have called "We are Nicholas Gentry 'The Immigrant'". After months of research on my own family tree, I become frustrated at twists and turns (and dead-ends) of the Gentry family. Especially the numerous Georges, Josephs, James, Generals, etc., that were becoming increasingly confusing.

So I decided to bite the bullet. For the last several months, I have been working on a tree that includes ALL Gentry folk descended from Nicholas Gentry. I believe the best way to provide the best information is by developing one tree.

Please don't think me presumptive, or ego-tistic by tackling a project this large, as if I should be the one to do it. I am just another genealogy bug like the rest of you. But I recently retired, and loved my Grandma Gentry more than anyone in the world, and wanted to leave this as her legacy.

I am not an expert, but I AM like a dog with a bone. My primary skill lies in finding people with mis-spelled names, connecting people correctly with census records, matching the right people with the right records, and linking different sides of families together (Gentry's marrying Gentry's; plus the threads of Greers, Houcks, etc., that run throughout our Gentry family).

To date, I've almost finished one of Nicholas's sons, Joseph, and all of his descendants. I'm then moving on to Samuel and Nicholas (I'm doing Nicholas last, as this is who I am descended from, so I'm saving this son for last as my incentive!)

For now, I am keeping this tree "Private". Why? Because I am still in the stage where I don't totally agree with some of the information I have put together, and I don't want mis-information passed on. Once I have completed all three sons (and several generations of Nicholas' daughters), I will best be able to verify the accuracy of my information.

Once done, I plan to make this a public tree. I have been in touch with some folks who are behind me, and are willing to help me with corrections, updates, etc., one it is completed. At that point, it would also work well if we had a corresponding web-site for information, get-togethers, research questions, etc. It would be good to have a web-site where we can post "requests for information" on ancestors we have little to know info on (such as wives without maiden names, etc)

I most likely won't be finished until late 2009, but could be sooner. I still plan on keeping my own Gentry family tree, as it is inter-related with other family names, as I expect other people will do the same, but I felt a primary point of information was needed.

If you have any comments, etc., you can either reply here, or send me an email at: rpqc@cox.net (that is "q" as in quail)

Thanks for reading. I also just left an email regarding some problems I have found in general with places of death and birth, that you may want to read.

And, in case we are closely related, my tree is: Bernice Gentry, Labanuel Gentry, James Louis, James, etc.

Regards,
Pam (1nceaShawley)
rpqc@cox.net

Sam Houston & Tiana Rogers Gentry

My family passed down for generations that we were somehow linked to Sam Houston. We were also decendents of the men who founded Foster Texas. My g-grandfather was clearly Indian and then some. His name was William Edward Foster. His father is listed as John Foster. The man who founded Foster Texas was Randolph Foster, whose son was John. Has anyone found a child produced by the union of Tiana and Sam? Feel free to contact me.

Gentry Relatives in Mississippi Alabama????? William Henry Gentry

I am looking for the lineage for William H. Gentry born in Mississippi in October 1854 - not sure what county or city...my great aunt says maybe West Station, MS because that is where my grandfather was born... W.H. married Fannie (nickname Frances?) Whatley (or other spelling) who was born in AL in Jan, 1856. WH Gentry's father was born in AL and his mother was born in KY. Fannie's father was born in VA and mother was born in AL.

This union produced 7 children including my great grandfather Samuel Ross Gentry. Maggie Gentry 1878, Sam Ross Gentry 1880, Lula Gentry 1885, Bill Gentry (possibly a JR.) 1883 +++All born in Mississippi++.

Then Mae Gentry 1888, Virgil Gentry 1890 and Brantley Gentry in 1892. ++++All born in East Texas, Smith County?

Found in 1900 Census.

Any information on William Henry's parents/grandparents would be appreciated.

Jill Gentry Lehr
Haden/Hardin/Harden Gentry of Warrick Co., IN

To start a new thread for the inquiry by W. Maxey, which of the three Gentrys by this name do you want? The "Haden" Gentry of 1850 census was probably the son of Shelton Gentry. The two "Hardin"s were probably both grandsons of Shelton's older brother Matthew. Shelton and Matthew were two of the four brothers that settled in Warrick Co., all sons of Samuel Gentry of Surry Co., NC and Barren Co., KY. Shelton was born in Surry Co., went to Barren Co., with his father (who died there), then lived in Ohio Co., KY where his brother Joseph settled, then moved to Warrick Co., IN

I am trying to find out information about R M Gentry. He was born 1842 in Tenn. He married Minta Oliver 12-20-10 in Oklahoma. I have been trying to research Minta Oliver, ( my husbands grandmother ), and found out that after her 1st husband died ( don't know when and can't find out where ), she married Gentry. Maybe if I find out more about him, I can find out where she is buried. Thank You for any help you can give. Teresa

Hi, my name is Michael Gentry and I am just taking a stab in the dark here. My grandma passed away in Fort Branch IN. on I believe 1-23-83 My grandpa Gentry Ralph was sick with a mental illness all though from what I know was a brilliant man. We have a large family but no one knows too much about Ralph who lived all over the country but a lot of his life was spent in the Fort Branch/Evansville area. I know this question may sound vague but was wondering if anyone can enlighten me on who he was and what he was all about. I believe he passed away in 1960 because of a very sad story to keep it short.

Thank you

Hello Gentrys. I noticed there are quite a few posts from, or to, Lou Gentry on this web-site, including some folks who've been trying to contact him.
I wanted to inform you all that my great-uncle Louis Gentry passed away 23 June 2007 at his farm in Christmas Valley, Oregon, from a sudden heart attack.
He was a man of many interests; farming, art painting, and genealogy. He was a good man, but that should be obvious, since he was a Gentry. He provided my mother with many photographs that I've used in my family tree.
Thanks for providing him much happiness through his genealogical friends.

Regards, Pam

Help with Mary Polly Gentry m. Wilson Gillaspie

Can SKS please help me untangle all the Mary Polly Gentrys?

My Mary Polly Gentry was born c. 1806 in Virginia (according to the censuses), became the second wife of Wilson Gillaspie/Gillespie/Gillispie in 1824 in Kentucky, bore 8 children. Wilson was shot in a duel in Kentucky in 1836; by 1843 she'd married Robert Robinson Boggs in Kentucky, had a son by him (Robert Cornelison Boggs) in 1844, and they moved to Andrew Co., Missouri. Robert was murdered by Kansas Jayhawkers in 1863; Polly died 1864. They're both buried in MO.

My problem is that according to "The Gentry Family in America" almost every Gentry named a daughter Mary, Polly, or Mary Polly. Adding to my confusion is the fact that in the Boggs Family Bible, Robert married "Margaret Galespie." There is a lot of erroneous information on the internet, including family group sheets.

For the life of me, I can't figure out which Gentry family she belonged to.

Any help will be most appreciated.

Julie Parks

Clemer Gentry- Indiana

I'm looking for more information on Clemer GENTRY. His marriage record indicates he is son of James & Bell, however, the only Clemer found (in census) shows up as son of George & Elizabeth. If anyone knows who Clemer's parents are, my hopes are you will share. Thank you. Here's what I know how about Clemer:
Below info is based on the following records- 1880, 1900, 1910, 1920 & 1930 census, World War I Draft Registration.

Clemer Gentry born 30 Nov 1887 IN (though some records indicate anywhere from 1873 to 1887), married 5 Mar 1905 in Warrick Co, IN to Martha Myrtle or Myrtle Martha (last name unknown)- she was born about 1886 IN. Their children were:
i. Helen Gentry b.abt. 1905 IN
ii. Gus Gentry b. abt. 1907 IN
iii. Iva M. Gentry b. 2 Sep 1907 IN d. 17 Jan 1993 Newburg, Warrick, IN married 21 Aug 1929 to Bert Preston DIMMETT-
he b. 17 Jun 1907 IN d. 19 Dec 1979 Evansville, IN, son of Theodore Thomas Dimmett & Mary Sophia "Mamie"
BROSHEARS.
iv.
Tyre/David/Samuel Gentry: Spartenburg, S.C. (1790-1800)

Hello.

This message is addressed to Bill Gentry and other Gentry family researchers and experts.

I have been using census information and some early South Carolina land records to explore family and other social relationships revolving around the Tijak Jentry who appears on the Spartenburg census in 1790.

Tyre Gentry was one of my grandfathers, through his son William, grandson James Madison, and great-granddaughter Martha Ann.

What is known about the David Jentry who appears on the 1800 census of Greenville District, South Carolina? His family consists of one male, age 16-26, and one female, age 16-26. Thus he appears to be a "newlywed."

Was this David a nephew of Tyre Gentry? It appears that these two Gentrys may have had a close relationship.

On the 1790 Spartenburg census, John Robuck is living two doors down from Tijak Jentry. On the 1800 Greenville census, this same John Robuck is living three doors down from David Jentry.

Is it possible that John Robuck hasn't moved between 1790 and 1800, but the geographic boundaries have changed, and David Jentry has moved into Tyre's former neighborhood? Perhaps someone else knows more about the changing geographic boundaries of upper South Carolina during this era following the Revolution.

In any event, the Robuck/Gentry juxtaposition in both places/times does not seem to be a random coincidence.

Then there is the 1790 and 1800 census of Spartanburg. On the 1790 census, David McKerley is the next door neighbor of Tyre Gentry.

On the 1800 census, David Mcearly's next door neighbor is Samuel Gentry. Who is this Samuel Gentry? Is he a nephew of Tyre Gentry also, like David Jentry of Greenville?

It appears almost certain that David McKerley/Mcearly are the same person, and that he is living in the same place in 1790 and 1800. If so, then Samuel Gentry has moved into Tyre Gentry's home. I think that this is a more likely scenario than the scenario in which David Jentry moves into Tyre's place in Greenville.

More than likely, David Jentry and John Robuck moved into Greenville District during the 1790s (Robuck moving from Spartanburg to Greenville).

It IS documented that Tyre had moved to Franklin County, Georgia, by about 1795.

A close relationship between Tyre and the Samuel Gentry of Spartanburg in 1800 seems easy to document. Tyre had a son named Samuel who was born in about 1802. Perhaps he was named for David McKerley's neighbor or his father.

Also, there were several grandsons of Tyre named Samuel, including Samuel Gentry Heffington (2nd Cherokee Mounted Volunteers); Samuel Rector Little (2nd Cherokee Mounted Volunteers); and Samuel Childs (nephew of Samuel Gentry Heffington).

Thanks for helping me to understand the family relationships between Tyre, David Jentry of Greenville, and the Samuel Gentry who is living next door to David Mcearly/McKerley in Spartanburg, 1800.

Sincerely,
Patrick Pynes

I believe he may be my gg grandfather that we are having great difficulty tracking down. He was apparantly born in West Station, Miss. (now extinct but would have been close) We thought he was born in 1854 or 1855. Thank you for your help! Jill Gentry Lehr

I am trying to locate any information on John and Sarah. They had at least 2 sons that I know of. One, Riley Gentry, was a railwalker who was crushed when a rock fell from the ceiling of Lewis Tunnel in Alleghany, Va. On his marriage license he states his parents are John and Sarah Gentry who were from Albemarle Va. Riley had a brother, Wyatt, who was knocked off the train platform at Alleghany Station, Va. He hit his head and died. Can anyone help me figure out who John and Sarah's parents were and if they had more children? Thanks much, Peggy

Looking for descendants of Robert Butler Gentry and Samantha Alice Raley. They were married in 1880 in Clay County, Georgia. Samantha was the daughter of Charles William Raley and Sarah Belle Neely. Charles Raley was the brother of my gggf, Benjamin M. Raley. I have recently received a copy of a widow's pension application for Sarah Neely Raley. Information in that document confirmed that Benjamin and Charles were brothers. Their siblings were: Nathaniel Green, Harriett Matilda (m. M. D. Heidelberg), Henry D., William Columbus, and Wilson Lumpkin.

If you are Robert's and Samantha's descendant, please contact me. You are invited to a Raley reunion to be held in Ebro, Washington County, Florida, on July 7, 2007. We are trying to get as many Raley relatives as possible to participate.

J. C. Gentry, DOB 5/23/1829, KY > WI >CA

J. C. Gentry,

son of Rodes and Allie (Moore) Gentry, was born May 23, 1829, in Madison county, Kentucky. His parents removed to Missouri when he was three years of age. Both his parents died before he had reached the age of fourteen, but he remained there until eighteen, and then went to the mining regions of Wisconsin. In March, 1850 he came overland to California, arriving at Coloma, July 18, 1850, where he mined six months. He afterwards spent several months in Calaveras and Butte counties, and in 1851 was engaged in butchering at Natchez, in the latter county. In six months he sold out and mined for some time. Then he went into the stock business, and alternated between mining and stock-raising for two years or more. In March, 1854, Mr. Gentry came to Plumas county and opened a meat market on Hopkins creek. Shortly after, with a Mr. Blanks, he started a hotel, which they ran for three years, and then Gentry bought out his partner, and continued alone one year. In 1858 he mined between Hopkins and Poorman’s creeks. On the sixteenth of February a snow-slide carried the log cabin, occupied by himself and family and three men, half a mile down the canon, crushing and instantly killing William Gentry, his infant son, and injuring one of his partners, John Wilson, so badly that he died. All of them were more or loss hurt, and were nearly suffocated before they could extricate themselves. It was a night of horror, and Mr. Gentry’s trip to Hopkins for aid in his night-clothes makes a thrilling narrative of suffering. In 1858 he went into the dairy business, and a year after began farming, which he followed three years, and then sold out and mined for five years. In 1867 he was elected county treasurer on the republican ticket, and after his retirement from office bought a ranch in American valley, on which he lived six years, and then bought part of the Jobe Taylor ranch, near Taylorville, where he now resides. He was married July 4, 1854, to Miss S. Turner, by whom he has had six children, four of whom are living.

SOURCE: Illustrated History of Plumas, Lassen & Sierra Counties, with California from 1513 to 1850. –
Fariss and Smith, San Francisco, 1882. p 189-190
"Gentry Family in America" Book

A communication within the past few days asked about the possibility of organizations such as the SAR or DAR accepting information from Richard Gentry's book "The Gentry Family in America" for proof of descent. While this book has much valuable information, I would never under circumstances consider it sufficiently reliable to be used for such purposes. I can accept many of statements in this book as being true, but I would never consider them acceptable as proof of relationship. The main section of the book, which covers just the descendents of Nicholas II, I consider to be perhaps 85% reliable. Many of the mistakes are minor. Some are of moderate importance such as the information for #4 David Gentry and #5 Nicholas Gentry in which the sons of Nicholas II are confused and partially mixed up with their cousins of the same name who were sons of Samuel II. There are a few very serious mistakes such as #17, David Gentry, son of Nicholas III having the biography of an entirely different David Gentry. The problem arises in knowing when the descriptions are right and when they are wrong.

The second section of the book, on "Other Gentrys", covers in somewhat random fashion, Gentrys belonging to the Samuel II and Joseph Gentry families. These biographical notes are much less reliable, and I would say they are perhaps 50% right. For this group of families, I place very little reliance on the material in the book because of the uncertainty of it being correct, and use the material only to supplement other evidence.

To summarize, the book has a great deal of value if used with discretion, but it should never be accepted at full face value.

Bill Gentry
