I've been interested in visiting the St. Peter's church in New Kent for some time. It's the church George and Martha Washington were married at. There may be some clues there. From the little information about this church on the web, it appears that some of the earliest grave stones (stones dating back to the 18th century) some are still ledgible and there are supposedly 'etchings' and writing of some sort on the orginial exterior brick. Nicholas, most likely, helped construct this church.

Hi, I am daughter of john J. Gentry of Cheraw, SC. His mother was Jayne Turnage Gentry and father was Landon Miles Gentry born 1896 from Spartanburg. This was not Landon's only marriage, but Jayne's only one. I know Landon had other children, but am not sure who they or their descendants are. Any info would be helpful.

I do have a few of Landon's military and personal documents, one with his signature.

Re: Gentry Family of VA & TN

I will abbreviate succession of descent of each of your Gentrys according to one of the major branches of Nicholas-I's family descending from his five sons: Joseph, Samuel, Nicholas, James and David, as follows: Nicholas > Benajah (= son of Nicholas-II)

1. Annie Gentry. Daughter of Nicholas > Benajah and his first wife Elizabeth Austin.

2. "Benjamin" (father of Martha Gentry). You have a gross error here. This was Benajah, son of Nicholas, born about 1733 in Hanover Co., died at age 98 in 1831 in Albemarle Co. The Martha ("Patsy") Gentry who married Elijah Dawson was the daughter of Benajah and his second wife Ann Jones.

3. Charles - I have no information

4. Coleman: Descended from Joseph Gentry branch > William and wife Frances (his family is given in Revol. War pension records) > Theodorik and wife Elizabeth. Theodorik lived in King William Co.

5. Mary: Presumably the Mary F Gentry, age 11 in the 1850 Hanover Co. census (the only one of that age). Her descent was James > Gaddis and wife Martha Thatcher > Turner and wife Louisa Cason(?).

6. Sarah: Nicholas > Robert and wife Judith Joyner > Bartlett and wife Elizabeth Whitman > Joiner and wife Nancy --?-- > Martin B and wife Mary.

Bill Gentry

thank you so much, Nena

these names are ones i had covered, pretty much, but i am still really puzzled about the infant who died Mar 4 or 5, 1927, dau or son of Julian and Anna (Louise) Helm(s) - the gravestone clearly says Julia Mae - records seem to say Julian and 'male' - i am pretty sure it's not twins as only one got a gravestone, it appears - and there's a death record for only one - this is puzzling! - b

I am new to this. So if anyone could help find anything on Helton Gentry I would appreciate it. The only information I have is is his birth year, 1939. I am not sure which state he was born in. His wife was Shirley Davis. They married in 1957, maybe New Orleans. He was from a large family. His father's name was Frank who died when he was 3.

Children: Daniel H. Gentry, Jr. (b. 1918); Frances Gentry (Dan's Wife), Twins Dorothy Ann Gentry (b. 13 Feb 1921 d. 8 May 1991) and Doris O. Gentry.
i would very much like to find more information about Julian Valentine Gentry, son of Susan M Gentry and Thomas Blythe Gentry - i found his grave, at least i think it is his, given that the birth year was 1898 and the year of death 1989, in Danville, Boyle Cty, KY . . . but no wife . . . it appears a child of his 'infant of Julian,' is buried in the same area - d 5 Mar 1927, Danville

b

many thanks, Cuzzin Bob - there is some kind of problem with records of the child 'infant of Julian,' (see cemetery records) who died at birth - the gravestone is for a "Julia Mae Gentry dau. of J.T. and L.H. Gentry" (Julian, the father, seems to have used the T. initial at some times in his life and the V. initial at some times in his life; his wife seems to have gone by Louise, but at times her name was written with 'Anna' before 'Louise') - only the year, 1927, is on the gravestone (see photo: http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=40...) - the date is seen as March 4 and as March 5, depending on the record one considers - i would say the child was a girl, Julia Mae, and died at birth - i do not see any reason to think twins were born - only one gravestone is seen in the cemetery with the grave of the mother - i don't know why the Julian name and the designation 'male' appears in some records - b

I spent most of yesterday searching the web for any info on Tabitha and Issac but to no avail. However, I did run across the following website.

It was the "alabamapioneers.com" website. On their homepage there is a search engine in the upper left corner. I entered "Gentry" and up came several sources. The 3rd source was a GED for Simon Gentry. It shows quite a bit of info which breifly includes our "Lewis Gentry" as being one of Simon's children. There aren't any sources listed but it sure gives quite a few of Simon Gentry's descendants.

now if we could just find a marriage record and what her maiden name was. tabitha would've been born about 1827. i think isaac was born about 1825. jill

Tabitha Gentry is also my 3rd great grandmother. I come through her son Wade H. Williams. I recently found them in several family trees on ancestry, but don't have any other sources. I can tell you what I have, if you are still looking.

Sincerely,
wilsonfam7

I need to retract my suggestion about Nathaniel being a son of of Richard Gentry of Monroe Co. He was still living in Greene Co., TN at the time of Nathaniel's birth, so could not be the father of Nathaniel.

It is difficult to identify any possible families in which the father was known to be born in NC and who was living in KY in the period between 1820 and 1830 (and presumably in the 1830 census) within reasonable distance of Adair Co. Another possibility would be either John or Martin Gentry, in RockCastle Co. in 1830, who were sons of the Revolutionary War veteran, Richard Gentry. They each had a son born 1825-1830 according to the 1830 census. They then disappeared and were not in the 1840 census. I have no idea what happened to them. If Nathaniel was a son of either one of them and the family was decimated by disease or accident, he may have grown up with an unknown relative.

Bill Gentry

I can quickly say that the two responses you received that have Nathaniel born in 1839 and with a father, Thomas, born 1815 are nonsense. If for no other reason, the 1850 census clearly gives his age as 22 (born about 1828). The 1880 census gives the same year of birth, and gives his father's birthplace as NC. There are other reasons I will not go into here.

My own guess, and this is just speculation, is that Nathaniel was the son of the Richard Gentry who was in Monroe Co., KY in both 1840 and 1850. Richard's two oldest sons (born 1820-25 and 1825-1830 according to the 1840 census), are missing from his family in 1850, at the same time that Nathaniel shows up for the first time in Adair Co. These counties are not far apart so Nathaniel's move is not unusual. It may be more than coincidence that one of Nathaniel's daughters in the 1880 census was named Rhoda, the same name as his aunt, Richard's sister. Richard and the older Rhoda (wife of Lewis Wheeler, also of Monroe Co., KY -- note the Lewis!) were children of Simon Gentry. They and Simon all were born in Surry Co., NC.

Bill Gentry
