The name Betty Genung(your Elizabeth?) came up at a Historical Society speach on the history of Moultrie(Just S of St Aug). Waiting on more info. Just need time to follow up on new contacts.
Hi Jonathan - My name is Steve Davies, born 1959, and I guess I'm your "long-lost" cousin; our common relative is Miles Davies (1810-??) in Oregon...Theodore Davies was his great-grandson, as was my grandfather, Harley Davies. A couple generations removed, and here we are.

I'm starting Davies family research and came up with your name while trying to trace everything out -- feel free to contact me through this forum (Peggy Johnson is my wife).

Steve Davies

I am looking for further information on the Tuttle - Genung family, of Auburn, Cayuga County, New York c. 1850. Two Tuttle brothers, John Augustine Smith Tuttle, Sr. and Charles Northrop Tuttle, married Genung women, probably sisters: John married Adelia Genung and Charles married Harriet Genung. Would appreciate hearing from anyone with knowledge of these families and would like to share information. Thanks, Suzanne

Hello, Stephanie. I am Grace Genung Chapman's granddaughter Elaine Chapman Christensen. You may email me at christensen20@msn.com. I don't have a great deal to share with you but I do have names and some documents I could send. In the meantime Google Sharlot Hall Museum. Check out their archives for the Genung family. You will be interested in the Memorial Rose Garden for Pioneer Women. Both Grace and Ida Genung are honored. I have been asked to prepare a nomination for Louise, but just didn't know enough about her life. Maybe together we will find enough facts to submit a nomination for her.

I am the oldest of four and the daughter of Goeffrey Allen Porter and Marla Jean (Graber) Porter and the grand-daughter of Evelyn L. and Homer P. Porter. And the great-grand-duaghter of Draga Z. (Genung) Earle and John Z. Earle. I have been hitting road blocks with John Z. Earle and the Zobieski name. I'm intersted in finding any information regarding our history and ancestry. I researching both sides of the family. Any information regarding the Genung's and Earle's. Also trying to go back as far as I can regarding Zobieski/Sobieski. I was always told that when I was born my father wanted to name me Draga Earle Zobieski Lightner Porter and I thought, wow, how crazy, but now I've releaized that it would have been an honor. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Thank You
Stephanie Renee (Porter) Bell

Also, the Sharlot Hall Museum has many of the Genung records. Louise was my great aunt; my grandmother was her sister Grace Genung. I just came across your message.
Mary Ann Leonard was my gggm. She married Edwin McArthurin 1834 at/near Madisonville, OH. Mary Ann died in 1889 ( I have the exact date somewhere) in Ripley County, IN. Mary Ann told her family that she had an ancestor "several generations back" that was a full-blooded Indian. The woman's name was "Jeneau" (as it was spelled in a family bible). I strongly suspect it is a phonetic spelling of Genung. I have more information and am in the process of posting it to my nascent website.
If the story of the "Indian Princess" (as she was always referred to) has any merit I suspect it may come from the Day line as I see no reasonable source of a female Indian in the Genung line.
I hope I do not find the need to pull my foot from my mouth in the near future. :)

Anyway, I would like to compare notes. Perhaps we can come up with something.

My posted e-mail address no longer functions as it was terminated because of vast quantities of spam.

I will be checking back with this board on a regular basis.

Walter MacArthur

I know nothing of the Leonard family except for what you shared and that there were (or are) also Leonards in Montgomery Co., Ind. where David Ward ended up. Do you have Leonard ancestors from there? We share quite an interesting ancestry. Let me hear from you again by e-mail. Warmest regards, Dave

Dave, I realize that your message is a 3 1/2 yr old one, but I have been searching for a parent of my 3rd great grandfather for many, many years. Name: JOHN G. LEONARD B. APRIL1792 MORRIS COUNTY, NEW JERSEY. M. SALOME DESSIE WARD ABT 1814. DAU OF STEPHEN WARD AND MARY POLLY GENUNG. ALL MOVED TO OHIO AND THEN INDIANA. the point of the question is - was there a GENUNG dau. that had a son or grandson named JOHN G (GENUNG?) LEONARD? I have exhausted all other ideas looking for his parent(s). since I cannot find a LEONARD SURNAME that matches the dates or name, I decided to try to find out about the G. middle name that has never been explained (he told his grandchildren in Indiana that they didn't need to know - heresay family story). Genung is the only G. connection that I can find. A far shot I agree but heck this is genealogy.
Hoping,

Connie Leonard Volkman

My father's name was Harold Bowman Genung. He was born in Inthaca N.Y. on Aug. 18, 1919. He married my mother Miriam Thelma Briggs in Atlanta. After they divorced I believe he married again and had 2 more children (2). . I have traced him to Columbus Ohio where he married an Evelyn A. They had a son named Steve J. who was a student in 1979 and lived at 108 Olentangy St. Could you possibly be my half brother? I would love to know more about him as he left when I was 3 and I never saw him again. My mother is still alive but has no information about him...she could how ever give information about his mother (your grandmother ?) The information I have is that he died in 1982 in Ascention Parish La. Please reply with any information you might have.
Thanks, Sincerely, Toni Miller

This information was taken from Oceana pioneer & Business Men of Today and was written in 1890.

Clark Bradford Genung of Golden Township, Oceana co., Mi. was born in Steuben Co., N.Y., Mar 20, 1848. His parents were N.E. & Sophia Genung. He came to Mi. in 1869, & Dec. 18, 1870, to Oceana Co. On Mar. 18, 1868, he was married to Emma V. Folsom, who died Oct. 10, 1879, leaving 3 children, one daughter, and two sons. (MY NOTE: Effie-1869, Myrton L-1875, Willets-1877).

On Nov.9, 1880, Mr. Genung married Jennie L Baker, who was born in Erie Co., N.Y., Feb. 13, 1861, the daughter of M.C. Baker, a pioneer of the county. One son & one daughter were born to them. (MY NOTE:these writings were written in 1890 and were not complete. Children were: Albert Earl, Jan 13, 1881, Glen C., May 2, 1884, Hazel J., Sept. 1887, and twins, Clare E., (my grandfather), and Olga G., June 7, 1896.

Mr. Genung is a hard working, enterprising & energetic man. Since locating in this county he has been engaged in lumbering and farming. He owns a fine, well improved farm located next to the village of Mears. When he moved upon the place there was not a house in sight. He has an orchard of 1500 fruit trees growing, & in 1890 set 500 more. The popular breed of Poland China swine was first introduced in to Golden Township by him, & it is an open question if he was not the first to bring pure bloods of this breed in the county.
He has held the following official positions in his township, Treasurer, 2 years, Supervisor, 3 yrs., Justice of the Peace, 4 years.

I will be glad to try and answer any questions anyone has. I know there was a lady who was in Mears, Mi. this summer inquiring about the Genungs. If she reads this, post a note!!

I have Clark Bradford born 3/20/1848. 1st marriage to Emily Folsom, 1868, who died in 1877. 2nd marriage to Jennie Baker(b. 1861), Nov. 1880. I do have a SS app for a son of the last marriage, Clare. He was working for the Pontiac Division of GM in the '30s.

I have Mears as their residence. A younger brother, Frank, must have come to Michigan, as his oldest was born there and his wife was from MI. Later went to Washington and have him up to 1930.

They are all brothers to my g-grandfather.

The Genungs you are referring to were from Oceana County which is along the shore of Lake Michigan. All I have on them is the name - C.B. Genung. I will go into the Oceana County site and see if I can find anything more than just a name. Do you have any birthdates. This could be helpful.

To grandchild of Clare Genung, son of Clark and Jennie Genung. My ggrandfather was Clark's brother Jacob L. of Hammondsport, NY. My grandfather, Archie C., returned the spelling of the name to the original French--my guess when he registered for the military draft in 1917--because my father was born Guenon. Another brother, Frank (Benjamin Franklin), went to Michigan and then to California and Washington. I have two pictures of what must be his wife and one of the sons. I have been trying to gather more information on these two brothers. If you have some, I would appreciate the exchange.

Thanks to the Riggs family researchers, we have uncovered new data regarding Jemima Genung's first marriage to Samuel Richards in nov/dec 1776. Samuel Richards died in the Battle of Brandywine Sept 11, 1777. Jemima received a half pension for the three and one half years that she was a widow before marrying Zenus Riggs in 1780. Samuel Richards and Jemima Genung had one child, David Richards 1777/78 to 1821 of Warwick, Orange, NY. David Richards received blwts for Samuel Richards service. Jemima Genung Richards Riggs and Zenus Riggs burried in Williamsville cemetery, NJ.

Your reference to NJ and French origins: there is a Genung family history, originally Guenon, published in 1906, and available via Tuttle Antiquarian Books, 28 S.Main St Rutland, VT 05701/ www.tuttlebooks.com

My connection is to Cornelius Genung who left NJ in the 1790s. His grandfather first came to NJ from NY, probably Westchester CO. or Queens c. 1720s. Two other brothers followed. Yours could be from one of the latter two.

Somehow my grandfather discovered the original spelling and changed his from Genung, soft g sound, to Guenon in 1918. Yes, right when he was drafted and then spent time in France.

Hi Larry,
Thanks for the info on Albert Horton Genung married to Mary Ann Ming. I believe very strongly that Albert H. is grandfather to my Albert C. Genung. Albert H. did have several children and one of them was Warren Genung -- listed in the 1850 Census as being 13 years old and living with Albert H. and Mary. This would make him the right age to be the father of my Albert C. My grandfather, Albert C. was born in 1864 and later had a son and named him Joseph Warren. I know that Joseph was the name of my grandmother's father (Joseph Beem) and I believe that the Warren came from his (Albert C's) father -- Warren Genung. However, I have not been able to prove that --- yet. My parents are both dead, so can't ask now........... Anyway, I was told by my mother that her grandfather, Albert C's. father, died when he was very young. This would make the story correct as Warren Genung died in 1867. I am now trying to find out where Albert C. and Carrie Mabel Beem were married, hoping that Albert C's parents might be listed on the marriage certificate. The information on the internet, etc. showing them being married on August 20, 1889 in Luther, Mich. is incorrect as they did not move to Michigan until around 1906, as my mother was born in Indiana in 1905. I guess I am going to have to do some serious checking in counties around Terre Haute, Indiana etc. If you come across anything please let me know.
Thanks!
Lynn
