Margaret Doty Georges, 81, died at her home in Escondido on February 3, 2004. She was born on November 13, 1922 in Thalia, Texas. She received her diploma in Nursing from Baylor University School of Nursing in 1943. She entered the U.S. Navy in 1943 and served on active duty as a Navy Nurse for 3 years at Balboa Naval Hospital in San Diego during the height of World War II. She was an instructor in the Navy Corps School and took a leadership role in preparing hospital corpsmen for combat duty. During these years, she also cared for countless Marines and sailors wounded in the South Pacific theater. Among these brave men was her future husband, Sgt. John W. Georges, USMC, of the Raider Battalion, 1st Marine Division, who had served at Guadalcanal. After the war ended, she earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree from Boston University. She subsequently served on the faculty of the School of Nursing at Boston University, where she participated with other early nurse researchers in establishing the Mugar Library of Nursing History. She later was a Professor of Nursing at Baylor University School of Nursing. She married Mr. Georges at St. Joseph ' s Cathedral in San Diego on June 10, 1950. Following their marriage, Mr. and Mrs. Georges settled in Escondido and began a lifetime of dedication to the health and education of the people in their community. Mr. Georges was Chairman of the English Department in the Escondido Union High School District until his death in 1985. Margaret Georges worked in a variety of nursing specialties and is fondly remembered by many Escondidans for her role as an obstetrics nurse at Palomar Hospital and as an outpatient care nurse at the Graybill Clinic. In 1966, she completed her School Nurse Certification and became the School Nurse at Orange Glen High School, a role she fulfilled until 1984. Subsequently, she worked part-time as a nurse at the Escondido Community Clinic, where she is remembered for her kindness and dedication to the alleviation of suffering among all her patients. She is preceded in death by her husband and a son, George Raymond Georges, who passed away in 1952. She is survived by her son, John Georges, her daughters, Catherine Georges and Dr. Jane Georges, her grandson, Rhett, and her beloved friends, Las Familias Espinosa, Preciado, y Reynaga de Escondido. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at St. Mary ' s Catholic Church in Escondido on Monday, February 9, at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be sent to: School of Nursing, University of San Diego, 5998 Alcala Park, SD, CA, 92110.
