Spelling Variants

I have been searching for the Gordge line. I checked here to day just to see what I could find. I noticed that some of you are looking for lines from France or Germany.

In France the name was spelled Gorges or Gorgas. In Germany the name is also spelled Gorges. All with a soft 'g' sound.

In England and Wales it is spelled both ways. I have cousins here in the US who spell it Geordge!

My suggestion is that you start searching as many spelling variants as you can.

Good hunting

Yes, I have all those names in my line. Peter (Pierre) GEORGES was my ggg grandfather, making Jeanne GEORGES Franchville some sort of great aunt of mine (I'd have to check my database to find out the exact relationship).

I have some of my tree posted at http://www.gencircles.com/users/georges. I haven't updated it in a while, but I'll get around to it soon. Hope it has some new info for you.

I also have email addresses for cousins who are closer to the Franchville line and may have more info for you. I'll send their email addresses to you directly via email.

Start of all thank you for your answer

But, these names don't sound familiar to me. My ancestor was coming from the Eifel area and not from Belgium. And GEORGES is a very common name in France and Blegium (I had three mates named GEORGES when I was student)

Best luck for your researches,

PS : If they lead you to StMichaels (MN), please keep me informed

Georges, Hachy, Lux, Belgium

For what it's worth, the GEORGES line that I've traced, comes from the Luxembourg province in Belgium, specifically the town of Hachy, near Arlon.

They emigrated to the US in the mid 1800's, shortly after Belgium became a sovereign nation. I think the area they came from was actually part of the Luxembourg principality before Belgium, Holland and Luxembourg got hacked out into their own nations.

I've traced my line back to early 1800's in Belgium, but my Belgium contact has the GEORGES line all the way back to the 1500's and they originally came from Germany...the Saarland region, I believe.

I haven't been able to make a documented connection to my line yet, but I'm pretty confident that my Belgian GEORGES' came from Germany originally.
