Milwaukee's German newspapers: Claude Gerard, d. 1863

Milwaukee's German newspapers: Claude Gerard, d. 1863

Death of a veteran. - On the night of Wednesday-last week, Claude Gerard died at Chilton, Calumet County, at the age of one hundred and seven years. He was born in France and served under the Napoleon I in the wars in Italy on the peninsula, and in Russia, as well as in the Battle of Waterloo. He was a respected resident of Calumet County for many years, by all who knew and loved him. His death came unexpectedly: before he went to bed, he had played with his grand-children with his whole heart, and the next morning the sun shone upon his corpse.

Translated from the "Banner und Volksfreund" (Milwaukee, Wisc.) 20 Oct 1863, pg 3 col 3; indexed at the Salzmann Library, St. Francis de Sales Seminary, and at the Milwaukee Public Library.

I just got a lead on one of my "brick wall" lines and I am hoping someone out there can help me find further information.

Searching for information on a Norman GERARD (alt sp GIRARD). He was living in Grand Rapids, Wood County, WI in 1900 at the age of 70. He was widowed and living as a boarder at hotel. Prior to living in Wood County, he was living in Omro Township, Winnebago Co, WI. Did he die there?

How is he related to Samuel GIRARD of Waupaca Co WI?

Any help appreciated.
Paula

The Gerard family was important in Patchoque, a larger city in Brookkhaven Township Long Island. I don't remember the father's name but he was a judge or something important in county government. His son, Wilmot D. Gerard, born 1875 in Patchogue, also worked in the clerk's office. The Grandson Lorimer E. Gerard age 16 was in Washington DC in the 1930 Census with his monther Lilli M. He later moved to Dallas Texas.

I wish I could give you this present. But, alas, I can't. My Gerard's came from Canada and settled into Michigan. If any of the branches or twigs went on, they are to far out for me to have discovered them myself. Sorry, but good luck and keep searching. It is surprising how and when something new turns up on Ancestry and Rootsweb. Keep checking back in with them.

I have quite an extensive history on the Gerard family from the Philippe Rollin web site but I have none after they immigrated to the US. My GGGGrandfather was Jean Joseph Gerard born 1815 in Herbeumont, Lux, Bel. He married Anne Marie Gaillard born 1814 in Herbeumont, Lux, Bel. They had seven children. One of their children was Jean Nicolas Gerard (my GGGrandfather)who was born in 1839 in Herbeumont. He married Marie Louise Longville born 1844 in Herbeumont. They married in Herbeumont and had 11 children. Felicie born 1867, Eugenie born 1868, Marie-Victoria born 1870, Pauline born 1873, Celina born 1875, Octavia born 1877, Marie (my GGrandmother) born 1879, Virginie born 1883, Joseph born 1885, Germaine born 1887, Jeanne born 1889. I have a copy of the ship list which indicates that the Gerard family immigrated in 1893 from Antwerp. The last place of residence was Pont Fangy. They immigrated to Natick Rhode Island. Marie (my GGrandmother) married Louis Petit in 1909 in Massachusetts. My Grandmother (Gabrielle) was born 1910 in Pawtucket RI. They immigrated to Canada in 1919. I have no other information on the remaining Gerard family who remained in the US. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks:)

DeAnne

I have a Joseph Gerard that is in my ancestory and wondering if this person is the father of Arthur. Joseph immigrated from Belgium with his family in 1893 to Rhode Island. Joseph was born about 1885 and was 8 years old in 1893 when they immigrated. Josephs sister(my great Grandmother)immigrated to Canada in 1919. Let me know if this Joseph is part of your ancestory. Thank you for your time and efforts.
DeAnne

Re: Gerard Lockwood connection

Mary Rohama Lockwood is my Great Great Grandmother. She married Henry Vincent Gerard/Jerard c.1858 and had 2 children, Dean and Leroy Vincent. Leroy V is my Great Grand Father. Mary is the daughter of Charles Lockwood and Hannah Goldie Gwin/Guin. Henry V was originally from Theresa, Jefferson Co., NY and migrated to Michigan where he met Mary. In 1861 Henry enlisted in the 9th Michigan Infantry and was subsequently captured during the battle of Murrfreesboro, TN. He was sent to Camp Chase, OH as a parolee and from there deserted. Upon returning to Michigan to find his wife, he found that she had moved back home with her family, and that he was no longer welcome. From there he went back to his family in NY where in 1863 he married Hester Ann Wright. I don't know if his first marriage was ever disolved or not. Henry later moved with his new family to Clark Co., WS where he died in 1897. Mary married Volney Cross in 1876 and moved to Wexford Co., MI where she died in1928.

I hope that this will aid you in your reserch.

Larry Smalley
