Hi there

I have just read your post from 2004 and hope you're still on this list :) It's quite some time back.

I am a GERBER living in the Eastern Cape and am busy researching my Family Tree. I have gone back as far as my Great Grandparents who lived in the Philippolis District in the Free State in the late 1800's. In my research I have noticed a lot of Gerber's come from that region. I would be interetsed to see the research on the family name you mentioned in your note. Do you have a Gedcom file to send me? I will send you mine if you like. My email address is gubbles@mweb.co.za or you could reply to the list. If anyone should see this post and know that Guillaume is no longer on this list please let me know

Regards
Gary Gerber

Hi there

I am new to Genealogy and was wondering if you could help me with my research into the Gerber family name? I have only managed to go back as far as my Great Grandparents who lived in the Philippolis District in South Africa. They were married there in 1913. I would really appreciate if you
could point me in the right direction regarding going further back than my Great Grandparents. These are their details

1. Catharina Hendrina Jansen van Vuuren was born in Philippolis District,Orange Free State Province. She married Adam Gerber on May 19, 1913 in
Philippolis. Adam was born in Heilbron (Pretoria).

Children of Catharina Hendrina Jansen van Vuuren and Adam Gerber

1. Barend Johannes Daniel Gerber was born on Mar. 13, 1914 in Burgher Street,Philippolis and died on Sep. 25, 1996 in East London.

2. Lukas Daniel Gerber was born on Apr. 1, 1917.

3. Adam Gerber was born on Dec. 22, 1919 and died on Mar. 26, 1955 in Reitzstraat, Kroonstad.

I would really appreciate any help you could give me

Kind Regards

Gary Gerber

GERBER GARBER GARVER CARVER- Resources

During my research of the Gerber/Garber/Garver/Carver family I have run across a few resources both on the web and in books. My connection is Michael Gerber who migrated from Pennsylvania to the Miami County, Ohio area. His name actually evolved into Carver.

Here is a little additional information that you may find useful:
Source:http://www.gameo.org/encyclopedia/contents/G472ME.html
"About 1735 three Mennonite Gerbers came to North America from Switzerland and settled in Lancaster County, PA and in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia, where the name was changed to Garber. In York County, PA the Garber Church was erected in 1814. In Virginia many members of this family have united with the Church of the Brethren.

The name Gerber was common among the Amish of Alsace (Alsace is a French province (German to 1697 and 1871-1919),it lies on the west bank of the Rhine between Switzerland and the German Palatinate) during the 18th and 19th centuries. Their descendants (some of whom use the form Garber) have been found in Ontario, Indiana, Ohio, Kansas, Illinois and Missouri."

Below are a few resources and hopefully some of them you will find useful in your research. I am not recommending that you buy any of the below resources, I only want to help my fellow researchers. You may fortunely find these at your local library.

Website:
GERBER GARBER GARVER PROGENITORS IN AMERICA
by Steven R. Garver and Jerry R. Masters
http://garver.org/index.htm

Website:
There is a section on the Gerber/Garber/Garver family in general at the Global Anabaptist Mennonite Encyclopedia Online:
http://www.gameo.org/encyclopedia/contents/G472ME.html

You can get copies of the Pennsylvania Mennonite Heritage listed below at: http://www.lmhs.org/

Pennsylvania Mennonite Heritage - July 1999
Gerber, Garber, and Garver Progenitors in Pennsylvania: Part One

Pennsylvania Mennonite Heritage - October 1999
Gerber, Garber, and Garver Progenitors in Pennsylvania: Part Two

Pennsylvania Mennonite Heritage - July 1985
The Christian Gerber Family of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania

Lancaster Mennonite Historical Society (Pennsylvania)
http://www.lmhs.org/

Book:
The Descendants of Christian S. and Anna Garber of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Allan A. Garber. Garber Historical Associates, 1985. 138 pp. (hard).
This book is good... unfortunately I never found a connection to my family.

Sorry for the length of the thread, but hopefully you will find some useful information.

Happy hunting !!
Robert

Hello Gerber researchers!
Thank you to you for getting me to think about my Gerber family history once again. I've been working on the Polish and French Canadian parts of my tree and need to follow through on this part. I'm not sure about a connection to Ernst, but since my Gerbers settled in Buffalo, I'm wondering if there is a connection to Paul and his family. I've heard that there is some female connection to that line from Alsace Lorraine as well. Garry, could you give me the names of the 9 children?
Donna PS I just found a wonderful old pendant with a picture of my grandpa (John) and his brother (George) on it! No one has seen a picture of George before, since he died at age 7!

todd,
julius billeter created a aarwangen gerber genealogy about 50-years or so ago that's on film at the lds library in salt lake city, utah. the family you are researching is in that genealogy but there's not a lot more detail than was in your e-mail (save for a few death dates).

since swiss records are collected at the ancestral home (in this case aarwangen) there wouldn't be a lot more detail there. for instance, johannes and maria may have had no issue since there are no children listed in aarwangen but his death date is. as for the leuenberger family, samuel was from rohrbachgraben - so you need to look there.

fyi, my mother was related to the gerbers. frederick's children would have been her 9th cousins.

please feel free to e-mail me if you want to compare more notes.

happy hunting,

tom mccarthy

Gerber, later Garber.

The original progenitor of the large family of Garbers was Jacob Garber (Gerber) who was born in or near Basil, Switzerland, in 1732. At the age of 21 years he migrated with his two brothers, Simon and Michael, in order to escape religious persecution then rampant in the old country. They landed at Philadelphia, Sept. 15, 1753, and from there traveled to Baltimore. I am the grandchild of James Robinson, who lived in Sebastopol, California until his death in the late 1970's. The Robinsons descended from the Garber family. James Robinson had sisters, Minnie, Pearl, Mary Frances, Fannie and Rena.

Not sure whether my ancestors crossed paths with your's or not. I was imprecise when I wrote that my family--the Robinsons--descend from the Gerber family. It would be more accurate to say that a Robinson married a Gerber (Mary?). I will do some more research and try to come back with better clues. In short, my relatives seem to believe they descend from John Robinson (1575-1625) who was the pastor of the "Pilgrim Fathers" before they left on the Mayflower. I am scepticism and trying to test the family story/myth. Obviously it would be brilliant if the story checked out but a quick peek at Wikipedia makes me wonder how it could check out!

William Henry Gerber, (1894--1976) resided in Little Falls, NJ in the 1920's. He was a carpet weaver as a young man and later worked for the post office. He was a friend of my relative, W.D. Thigpen, who lived in Little Falls ca. 1927.

A son of William H. Gerber was William D. Gerber (1921--2000), also residing in Little Falls, NJ.

I recently learned that W.H. Gerber sent an inquiry to the Navy in 1939 for the purpose of determining the status of my relative's Navy service so that he could arrange to have a military headstone placed on his grave in Little Falls. W.D. Thigpen died 28 Dec 1927.

Would like to contact relatives of this Gerber family.

A. Thigpen

My ggg grandmother was from Trier, Germany so now I'm getting a little closer. I also was given the catholic diocese in germany that he belonged to. Any thoughts other than contacting the catholic church there would be appreciated. I'd like to find out more about my ggg grandfather/mothers families.
Joseph Gerber came from Bingen on the Rhine per my father. He was a shoe cobbler. He was 22 when he came over to USA in 1854 and settled in Dansville, NY. He entered through the port of NY from what we've found out. Looks like he came over on the ship 'Spark of the Ocean'. Any thoughts or ideas on what or where I should go now to find out more about his mother and father and further back if possible? I believe that Joseph pronounced his last name as Garber only because of some of the records I ran into and what the family has said. Thanks!! Mark
