I am trying to find information about my grandmother's family prior to coming to the states. I don't know if she had cousins/aunts and uncles and if she did who they were and if they had descendants. Her maiden name was GERM and she was born in 1906. On the Ellis Island passenger
list it states that she was from Pulkese, Yugo-Slavich but when I look to the 1920 Census (US) for her parents it says they were from Bulkese, Hungary
it also lists there nationality as Hungarian and race as German. I have looked for "Pulkese" and found nothing; however, Bulkese does turn up quite
a few things. Also, on the ship manifest it asks for the name of relative or friend from the place they were traveling from and the name listed was:
Andreas Kirschner in Pulkese (?). My father thinks that we are related to the Kirschners in some way. My grandmother did not come to the states until
she was 14. Her parents came to the states in 1907 or there about and left her with her grandparents. I don't know if it was her maternal or paternal grandparents.
I have not been able to find any further information on my own and was wondering if you would be able to help. The only information I have about my
grandmother and her parents is as follows:
Dorothea GERM b. 2 April 1906, possibly in Bulkese, Hungary arrived in US aboard the Rochambeau in 1920 accompanied by her mother. Sometime in the late 1920's she married my Grandfather William August Dreyer.
Dorothea's' Father: Jakob GERM b. approx. 1882 (Jakob was a cabinet maker)
Dorothea's' Mother: Kristina b. aprox. 1885
Kristina and Jakob had two more children, Philip and Margaret born in St. Louis.
Jakob and Kristina came to St. Louis, MO in 1906-07.
Andreas Kirschner from Bulkese may be a relative.
My father remembers a Geist family that he visited when he was a child that
are related to Dorothea thru her parents.
Father: Andrew Geist
Sons: Robert and Andrew
Any guidance you can offer will be greatly appreciated.
Thank you,
Michele
