Hello Jennifer,

My surname is Germ and I was born in Germany. My father, who died in 1990, came to Germany from Slovenia via Austria in the 1950's. His father's family is originated from Novo Mesto, Slovenia.
The family were ethnic germans who settled in the 'slavic' areas of the Austrian empire since more than 200 years. The son of the oldest ancestor I know was born in 1754.

Hello Liesje,
My surname is Germ and I was born in England. My father, who died 3 and half years ago, came to England from Austria (Carinthia) in the the 1960's. His father's family may have originated from just over the border in Slovenia.
I have always been curious about the the origins of the name: From what I know, it is either German or Slovenian - or perhaps both ie. ethnic germans who settled in the 'slavic' areas of the Austrian empire?

I guess I really want to know whether this half of me is German or Slav.
I am wondering what taking part in a DNA project would involve. I've heard that a male sample is required if you are looking at paternal ancestry. I have one brother (sharing same father) who I may be able to persuade.
Please let me know the details.

The confuse about where the Germs came from may be that they are from the BANAT region of Hungary. It was settled by German immigrants. who then later came to the US. That is where I have traced my Germ ancestors to.

Contact me if you have any other questions.

Re: Germ History

Thank you for replying to my posting about the surname "Germ." So, it is very common in Austria? There has been an ongoing debate in my husband's family as to where the surname originated. In successive census years, they have their country of origin listed as Austria, Croatia, Poland/Austria, Yugoslavia, and Czechoslovakian. Since Johan's immigration was in 1888 (according to census records), we aren't sure what the most likely scenario is. We are having a hard time finding any immigration/naturalization records on him. Anything you could provide me on the history of the surname would be welcomed and I really appreciate your reply. Just as reference, Johan Germ immigrated in 1888. His children were Maximillian J. Germ, Angelina Germ, and Jules Germ. Max had a son named Norbert and he had a son (my husband), Kevin. There is a rumor that Johan came over with a brother. A little history on the family name would be great! Thanks again

Germ History

I am basically wondering where the name "Germ" came from. My husband is a Germ (no joke intended) and we have been trying to find the ancestry of a Maximilian Germ who is believed to be from either Germany or, more likely, Austria. There are many Germs in the Pittsburgh, PA area and was wondering about ship lists and name genealogy. Anyone that could help would be greatly in our debt. Is Germ short for something?
