Hello fellow researchers,

I'm relatively new at this so I apologize in advance if I am breaking a convention by posting this information. Below is everything I have on Sylvester German and family, with date and place information marked private if the individual is still living. I'd love to hear back from folks that can fill in the missing pieces of the tree, and hope some of the information I've posted is useful. For example, I've been able to cross-check against some death certificates, and try to note where I did so.

---

Descendants of Moses Fleurier German

Generation No. 1

1.

hi, My German family members lived in Brooklyn, New York. They arrived in the 1850's from Prussia. My great-great grandfather, Louis St. Germain, changed the family name to German after emigrating from Prussia. He felt that German sounded less foreign. My great-grandmother, Laura German, was born in Germany, but her younger brother, Charles German, was born in New York.

Please add me to your website list.
Thanks,
Mary

Any information regarding German families in Ohio, Illinois and Missouri would be greatly appreciated. My great-grandfather was George Washington German whose father (given name unknown) was born in Ohio. George was born Aug. 1833 in Illinois. He married Anna Musgrove (b July 1840 in Ohio) about 1857. They raised their family of 9 children (Sarah/Sally-1859, Isaac-1861, William Alfred-1863, Sylvester-1868, Francis-1872, Edwin-1875, Ella L.-1878 and Charlie-1881) in Missouri except for a few years in the mid-1860's in Iowa.

I have information on descendants of Williams Alfred, Ella L. and Sarah/Sally.

Dean

Does anyone have a Margaret German in their family? I believe she was born in New York state around 1803. She married Zar Barnum about 1825 and died sometime after 1860. I found her in the 1850 and 1860 cenus for Franklin, Lenawee County Michigan. Zar is listed in the 1840 census and he is married at that time. Zar died sometime between the 1850 and 1860 census. She is listed as Zar's wife in the Portraits and Biographical Album of Hillsdale County in 1888. The portrait was of Perry Hopkins who married Betsy Barnum, daughter of Zar and Margaret German Barnum. I cannot find any info on her or her parents and would appreciate anything anyone can share.

Hi all,

I was wondering if anyone could help me, as I have hit a brick wall with my search for my Great-grandfathers ancestry from the UK.

His name appears as Lewis Gottliebe in the 1891 census, and nationality as Austria F.S. (Foriegn Subject), living with the Pabwead family from Germany in London England (There are also people from Poland mentioned on the same record, meaning that the country of Poland was recognised).

1901 also just sates Austria, but the 'e' has gone from the end of his surname (possibly original type error, as never appears again) living with his wife Sarah Barnett & daughter Rosalind.

His 1896 marriage certificate from the Deritend Synagogue in Birmingham sates his Fathers name is Hyman Gottlieb who was a Wine merchant.

I've checks as many places as I can think, with no interment records, army service etc I don't know where to start. I've search every database I can think of (Jewishgen etc) for Austria, Poland, Germany & Russia.

Apparently when alive he didn't speak of his home land or family (didn't speak much English at all), and from the few living relatives there are a couple of stories (that he went into an office an Austrian and came out a Pole). Don't know how true.

If anyone can give me advice on where to go next please let me know.

Many thanks

Nicola Gottlieb

He and his wife, Henriette (b. 1855 Russia), and a child whose name may be Lori (b. 1876 Russia) arrived in New York on the ship Amerique, sailing from Le Havre and Plymouth.

I cannot find the family after their arrival, but think that Abraham may have changed his name to Germain GEARSON.
SCHWEINBERGER meaning and origin

Greetings,
I am currently attempting to research my wife's family tree. They came over to Australia in 1950s. While the initial generation was born in Germany, the next generation was born in Lithuania, the next generation in Russia and maybe the next from Austria. I am having a great deal of trouble locating the exact origin and history of the name. I have found that one variation
"SCHWEINSBERG" originally came from Switzerland. From my research is literally means Pig Mountain or Pig Shepherd.
I was wondering if anyone could point me in the right direction or help? I would love to find the exact origin of this name.
Regards
Jon.
I am seeking information on the German Family of Baltimore, MD. The earliest member is Philip German (1748-7/11/1814) married to Catherine (died aft 1839). He had at least 3 children: Philip (bef 1797-bef 1837), Frederick (bef 1797 - bef 1837) and Mary Magdalina (c1781-aft 1837).
Son Philip had a son William P. [Philip?] German.
Son Frederick married Ann and had a son Michael Philip German (1813-1885). Fred's widow married Philip Zimmerman by 1837.
Daughter Mary married first Philip Ayrenberg on 2/11/1799. Married second William Leonard Pouder in 1807. May have had 7 children by the second marriage.
My line descends through Michael Philip German. Any information or descendents of these Germans will be greatly appreciated.
Thank you.
I'm trying to find English roots of Thomas GERMAN (or JARMAN) who resided in Calvert County, Maryland, in the late 1600s. I would like to learn more about the Thomas GERMAN who was indentured in Bristol in 1662 and bound for Maryland.

I'm wondering what became of Thomas and Henry GERMAN (or JARMAN) christened in 1632 and 1635 in Wiveliscombe, sons of William GERMAN (or JARMAN). If the William buried there in 1646 was their father then they were orphans - what records might I find of orphans in that time period? Is this the Thomas GERMAN bound for America in 1662? Where is Henry?

Are there any other candidates for the 1662 Thomas GERMAN or JARMAN?

Thanks.

Jefferson W. GERMAN 1851-1944

J. W. GERMAN

Former Resident, Died on April 11, 1944

Dent German received word last Wednesday, April 12, that his father, J. W. German, had passed away at the home of his oldest son, Harley J., in Pittsburgh, PA. Mr. German was an old resident of Nebraska, having been in business here as manager of the Beetison store eight years, and later connected with a shoe store.

He was born in Cuba, New York, Nov. 23, 1851, and departed this life April 11, 1944. He was married to Miss Henrietta Owens of Memphis, Nebr., who with two sons preceded him in death. There are three sons and one daughter, Harley J., Jefferson D. and Denton C. of this city and Bertha M. Parrish left to mourn his loss.

Before coming to Nebraska he had taught school in New York a number of years. Then he located in Ashland. After his marriage he and his bride made their home in Wymore, Nebr., where he was in business and also served as justice of the peace for three years. Later they located in Missouri, where he made his home until six years ago when he went to Pittsburgh, PA. Older residents of this city no doubt will remember Mr. German as he visited here as long as his health would permit.

I have posted DNA testing results for a descendant of Charles GERMAN, b. c1774, of Wilkes Co., NC. These results emphasize the absence of paternal connections between the Wilkes County family and other GERMAN / JARMAN families in North Carolina. The results also show no connection between the Wilkes Co. family and another GERMAN family in McNairy Co., Tennessee. These results are available online at http://www.inct.net/~german/results.htm
James German was born in England ca. 1828, moved to Cardiff ca. 1850, married there and had two daughters - Frances (Fanny) and Mary. He is recorded in the Michigan census for 1880 living at Orchard Lake with his daughter Fanny, now married to James Strong. James German died in 1900. I'm interested in where he is buried and any information on his daughters. I believe Fanny was one time postmistress for Orchard Lake and Mary (Findley?), whom I believe owned a farm at what was the corner of Huron and M59 in Pontiac.
