I'm interested in information about Esther Gerring Carbine (m. Fred Wallace Carbine). She died on 1 Mar 1969 in San Jose, CA.
Her father was Peter Gerring of Russia. Her mother was Sarah Liechman, also of Russia. Her siblings were Rose (6 years older, b. in Russia and possibly a 1/2 sibling from father - mother Sarah would've been 14 at Rose's birth, which is possible), Fannie (b. 1891 PA), Anna (b. 1895 NY), Jacob (b. 1900 NY), Ida (b. 1900 NY twin of Jacob), Norman (b. 1902), William (b. 30 oct 1903 NY, d. Ap 1970 NY), Alfred (b. 17 Dec 1905, d. May 1976), and Lawrence (b. 22 Jul 1912 NY, d. 10 Jul 1981 in San Mateo, CA). US Fed. Census places the family (except for Lawrence) in Rochester, NY Ward 8, Monroe Co. Father was a merchant, while Rose and "Ethel" worked as tailors in a dress shop, while Anna was a telephone operator.
1930 Census shows us that Sarah was a 56 year old widow living at home with Anna (age 30), William (age 26) and Lawrence (age 17).
Esther married Fred Crabine (native of Chicago, Illinois) abt. 1920 in San Francisco, CA. Fred was a widow with a young son, also named Fred Wallace Carbine (of San Jose>Fresno, CA) at the time. Fred Sr.'s deceased first wife was named Florance A. Simon, of Illinois. I'm wondering why and how Esther Gerring came to San Francisco, California in the second decade of the 1900's. I'm also curious to know if she and Fred gave up the baby they had in San Francisco on 2 Aug. 1920. There was only one girl born that day in San Francisco, theirs, Dolores Esther Carbine. My grandmother was given up for adoption, and she was born on 2 Aug 1920 in San Francisco, CA. In Esther's obit. there is mention of a daughter named Dee, or Dolores. Did she have a second dau. and named her Dolores as well, or, is there something fishy abt. my grandmother's birth certificate. My grandmother was placed in a Catholic orphange in San Francisco (the Carbine's had their baby at St. Francis Hospital), and adopted by Clifford Carlton Childs and his wife Julia Ann (Beier) Childs, at about age 2. She remembered her name as Dolores Estelle at the orphanage. I'm very curious, and I'd love to surface these roots, if they are in fact mine.
