Manifest says they came from Coalisland. A living daughter of theirs confirms this information but knows little about her father. Can you help? Thanks.

Re: GERVIN Whitehead

David, I've come across a little additional information on Elizabeth Whitehead - an old letter written by her granddaughter, that contains the following excerpts. The notes in italics are mine.

"She [Elizabeth] was born in India. Her father was in the British army and was moved to Kingston. I never appreciated her as she was always telling me how good Maude’s children were [Maude was one of Elizabeth's daughters] and how good her brother’s children were, and I certainly was not a good girl.

One brother lived in a brick house near the fair grounds [in Ottawa] and looked after it. In 1918 Mother took me to see an aunt. I think she called her Aunt Maria. We were in a large room with a bed in one corner and an immensely stout woman, ‘aged’, and a girl of about twenty. My main remembrance is the feeling of love for one another. These women had, I think, the name of Denmark. One of the brothers’ daughters became a designer and worked for Butterichs in New York. I think Mother knew her well, as she often spoke of cousin .. I can’t remember the name. It was an uncommon one.

Nell remembered her [Elizabeth] as a stout woman, a wonderful worker who came at Christmas time to see to the puddings and cakes. I just remember her after she broke her hip, and I saw a good deal of her when Maude went to Winnipeg and she came to live with us, and we all knew she was doing us an honor. Mother read to her in the evenings with Charlie, Ted, and I sitting on footstools. Grandma was a lady."

So it appears Elizabeth had at least two brothers, and a sister named Maria - whose married name may have been something like "Denmark."

Does that fit with your information?
Joan,

My name is Barry Gervin, my Father is Thomas Gervin who came to Canada in 1950 from co. Tyrone, N. Ireland. His father was Francis Gervin who was married to "Mary Alice". I believe Francis's father was Joseph Gervin.

I know everybody up to Francis was Catholic. If you could send me any information to bgervin@gervin.com about any gervin's branching through co.
GERVINs - Co. Tyrone, N. Ireland > Canada, mid 1800s

I'm researching the family of James GERVIN who came to Canada from Tyrone around 1840-50. He married Elizabeth WHITEHEAD, the widow of a British soldier. James (d. 1875) & Elizabeth (d. 1917?) are buried in Ottawa, Ontario.

They had at least two sons - Joseph GERVIN (1861-1953) and Ernest B. GERVIN (b. 1860s). And probably a 3rd, John GERVIN (b. ca 1855).

1. Joseph married Elizabeth SMITH in 1890, in Buckingham, Quebec, and had ten children. The family eventually settled in Ottawa. I have full information on this branch.

2. Ernest married Emiline BOUDREAU in 1897, in Montreal, Quebec. They had at least two children there - Ernest Berril GERVIN and Elizabeth Anne GERVIN, both baptized in 1898. It appears Elizabeth died at the age of 13.

3. John married Elizabeth WITHERINGTON. They lived in Ottawa and had at least three children - Mary Ellenor GERVIN (b. 1887), James Charles GERVIN (b. 1889), and Elizabeth Gertrude GERVIN (b. 1892). I believe there was a 4th child too, Bertha GERVIN (1897-1901). John died in 1930 and is buried in Ottawa. I believe he's the son of James (and brother of Joseph & Ernest), but it's not confirmed yet.

I'd love to hear from anyone who may have a connection to this line!

Yes, Whitehead was her maiden name. I made a mistake in my original post. She wasn't the widow of a British officer, she was the daughter of one, and was born in India. Or so I've been told by another descendant. I understand they may have met in Kingston, Ontario.

I was at the Anglican Archives in Ottawa last summer but didn't check out the Garvins. I would have wondered if this was the same Elizabeth Whitehead too.

Do you know anything about Ellen's father, or if she was born in India too?

Gervins in Canada

I've just starting working on my Gervin family tree, so I don't have a lot of information yet. My g-grandfather was Joseph Gervin (1861-1953), m. Elizabeth Smith (1867-1946). They lived in Buckingham, Quebec, with their ten children, in the late 1800s, then moved to the Ottawa area. I understand the family originated in Tyrone County, Northern Ireland.

If this is a family you may be interested in, I have a pretty full chart of Joseph & Elizabeth's descendants, and am awaiting some records from a cousin that may shed light on previous generations. I'd be happy to share whatever I have.

This is such an uncommon surname. Do you think there's any connection here?

Thanks, Bruce. I look forward to hearing from you, and hope it's the same family.

The Joseph Gervin (1861-1953) I mentioned had 10 children. I thought giving you their first names might be helpful. I imagine that some of them were named after Joseph's parents or siblings, and may show up in your group too.

The names of his children were: Maude Elizabeth, James Douglas, Walter, Dorothy Lillian, Annie, Amy Irene, Marion, Roland Kenneth, Marjory, and Mildred. And I believe he may have had a brother or other relative named Reuben.

Anything sound familiar?

My paternal grandmother was Mary Gervin, apparently born in Glasgow, Scotland, probably in 1880's.....she married John Simpson. They emigrated to Toronto, Ontario, Canada where he apparently worked "on the docks". He, I'm told, was hit in the head by a crane hook and died in hospital during the flu epidemic of 1918. They had 3 children, Belle, James (my father) and William. James was born July 29, 1914....Belle was older than he and "Bill" was younger. I know they had a cousin, Mary Hunter.....I assume her maiden name was Gervin as she called my grandmother Auntie Mary. Both my parents are now deceased and, with them, any further information on this subject. Should you have any further information linked to them, I would be most appreciative.
