Not sure if you are still checking this board in regards to the Geurins. Especially the children of Joshua Geurin, son of Jabez Geurin, Stewart Co. Tenn.

Joshua's oldest child was Elizabeth Caroline, known as Caroline. Her father, Joshua, predeceased his father, Jabez. Jabez puposely excluded her in his will. Looking to see if anyone along this line knows this story and might know why.

You might consider the DNA testing comparison for the surname Garren. There were Garren variations in north Texas.

Geurin/Geurian

Hello, I am helping some distant cousins of mine to find thier real ancestors. Mary Alice Graham was the mother of two sons one named Vernon and one named Henry Grady. They were born in Texas in about 1905 & 1906. These children were raised by Mary Alice Graham and her husband George Monroe Jones in Arkansas. Upon the death of Mary Alice Graham Jones, Monroe told the by then grown Grady that they were Illegitimate and their real last name he thought was spelled Geurian.

I am related to Mary Alice Graham and I know that she was living in the home of her sister Sarah Francis Graham Hutson and her husband Jackson Berry Hutson in Montague County Texas previous to the births. In the Hutson family the story is that Mary Alice was slipping around with a married man in the neighborhood. And we told to leave the county by family as she shamed them.

Living nearby the Hutson and Graham families in the Montague area were the family of Louis Kendrick Geurin. One of the descendents of Henry Grady Geurian has had a DNA test done and since there is no Geurin/Geurian DNA project we are at a loss to prove who the father of Henry Grady really was. Any help appreciated. Contact me any time

Elijah and Virginia were my great-great grandparents. They had another daughter Iona Isabelle. She married Jefferson Davis and they and seven children one of which was my maternal grandmother Lydia Davis born in 1916 (d. 2006). She married Graden Sullivan and they had three children Jim Joy and Charlotte. Joy is my mother. I can get additional info if anyone wants.

I remember aunt Liddy - she died when I was about 10 I think.

You might check the wife of Thomas Jasper Geurin for Indian background; there is no Indian with the Geurin or Harvil side and, as far as I know, there is none with the Norris side. Our Geurin family left Bradley Co., TN, going through Arkansas, possibly Saline County or Johnson County area, then on to Parker County, Texas by 1860, then Cooke County by 1863. There are only two known Indian connections through marriage with the Geurin line after they reached Cooke County--Susan Geurin married G. W. Fletcher who was part of the "white" Choctaw folks who did not live in the Territory (there were several of the white Choctaw mix that lived in and around Parker County, Texas before the Civil War) and George Geurin's first wife had a Choctaw background according to their story. Lavina Geurin's sister-in-law married into a documented Cherokee line that went to California. There is no Indian mix with the spouses of George, Louis Kendrick, or William.

That is what someone had told me before. Trying to trace to see if there was any indian heritage probably from the female side. Thomas Jasper would have been my great-grandfather. I remember my grandfather saying Jasper died working the cotton fields in Oklahoma on his birthday in Gene Autry, OK. I have scanned thru the message boards and assume our Geurin side came from South Carolina from France. Do you have any idea about this or where to look?

I don't think it's the same one. Emma (Emmar) Nivens was born 7/30/1856 in Alabama, probably Shelby County, and died March 4, 1934 in Davis, Murrary County, Oklahoma. She married William M. Geurin on May 4, 1873. To my knowledge, they had only six children: Henry Edward, Charles Wesley, Lena, Albert, John and Luther L. Another child, Corda, appears on the census rolls also, born in October of 1890, but I don't believe this was one of their children. (I say this because Charles Wesley was my grandfather and I knew Great Uncle John and his children.) I heard family speak of Henry, Lena, Albert and Luther, but never heard of Corda.) All the children were born in Texas, the four oldest at least in Cooke County. Emma's parents were John Harvey Nivens and Mary Tomlinson. I hope this helps.

Since I posted my message to you, I've done more digging, and have a "Corda", born in October 1890 to William M. Geurin and Emma Nivens. I'm surprised because I thought Luther was the last child, and there's a five year span between Luther and Corda. I'll keep digging.

I, too, am researching Geurin in Stewart County Tenn - particularly the father of George Washington Geurin -- believed to be "J.R." or "Jonathan".
In 1850 Stewart County census (enumerated Sept,1850) there is a Jonathan "Dearen" with all the right family members. In the Bradley County census for 1850
enumerated 11/1/50 there's a "Nancy Geering" (we think Nancy Harvil married J.G) with the children and no
Jonathan....Anybody got any ideas???? thanks in advance...

THANKS!!!!
I do know my GW was born 10/1/49
in Cleveland, Bradley County, TN and died
4/11/37 at Healdton, Carter County, OK
He was married to Martha Rozzell 3/13/81 in
Montague County, TX
His mother was Nancy Harvil Geurin and we
we know his father was "J.R." and we're pretty
sure the "J" is for Jonathan but that's about
all we know after that. There seems to be
some mystery about him in that none of the others
would speak of him. As you know, it's that
"mystery" that just makes us all that much more
curious. If you have any info about him, I would
LOVE to compare notes. Thanks again for your help!
Stacey

geurin surname

I am descended from George W. GEUrin who ended up in
Oklahoma via Tennessee. A distant cousin tells me that
GEUrin is of French extraction while GUErin is of
German extraction. He also tells me that our GEUrins
came from the Alsace region of France via Morristown
New Jersey, but I can't seem to trace them. I am stumped
on one particular Jonathan (G.W.'s father) who seemingly
left G.W.'s mother and the family and (rumor has it) went
to Louisiana. I've seen a lot of stuff out there on your
Arkansas Geurins. Check familytreemaker.com and familysearch.org
as well as ancestry.com. Good luck to you and if you come
across my scoundrel, Jonathan, let me know!
SM

Yep. J.R. Geurin was married to Nancy Harvil. It seems he was a big DEADBEAT. Some rumors include him leaving his family for another woman or being a hermit. J.R. & Nancy Harvil Geurin had eight children together. She then moved to Montague County, Texas and married John Tyler. Nancy & John had one son together. Email me if you want more info
Kim

Yes. I have Lewis Kenndrick Geurin's death certificate that lists his father as John Robert Geurin (born S Carolina) & mother Nancy Howell (born Tennessee). The death certificate does not list the informant, but it was probably one of his kids.

The obituary for Lewis Kenndrick Geurin says "his father died in his infancy. His mother with her children moved to Parker County, Texas in 1856. In 1860 she married the Rev. Mr. Tyler........"

Hope this helps.
Re: Nancy and J. R., obit for Louis Kendrick Geurin, son of Nancy and J. R.

There are several of "us" Geurin descendants who have tried to connect Nancy's husband J. R. with George in Bradley Co.; only documentation we have found is the one death certificate that has J.R. as the father's name--that does not appear on any other DC. The proximity of Nancy to George and his wife on the 1850 Bradley Co., TN census is the nearest paper "proof" that Nancy's Geurin children were related to George.

Please share your documentation about J. R. being Jonathan Robert--the Jonathan has been tossed out as a possibility, but the proof? It could have been John.

Another puzzle is when did Nancy's son Timothy Tyler die? He was alive in 1890, but dead by 1900. His sons were staying with Nancy before her death in the old Chagris community NW of old Healdton, Oklahoma--that story came from Nancy's granddaughter Lillie Wright.

Appreciate any documentation or information.
