David, I'm truely sorry that I have not kept records of who and whom I have talked to over the years and a copy of that conversation. I'm at a lost as to when I have emailed you. Would like to talk more as we are definitely cousins. I'm sure the story of Abraham murder came from my grandmother Charlotte Petty who got the stories from her mother Charlotte Ray/Devine/Ghormley. Very recently my cousin and myself finished a biography she wrote of the the family that I discovered in my mother's effects after her death in 2004. We are just about to put it into a book form that Kinko's will print up for us. My email is smace@wowway.com if you would like to disscuss more with me. Love to talk! Sherman

Well cousin, I don't think I have the pages of the manuscript, but I did find much of the same information in the 1922 Tennessee State Civil War Survivors questionaire answered by Wiliam G Ghormley. It may be the source of the manuscript of which you write. He was blind at the time, so someone may have kept a copy of the answers he gave, or transcribed them later, giving rise to the manuscript. It runs some 42 questions, and covers his life before and after the Civil War. The last question is where the genealogy comes from as I remember.

I do come through most of the same line:
James (before 1733 Ireland)
Hugh (2 Mar 1733 Tyrone, Ireland)
Abraham (26 Dec 1758 Omagh, Tyrone, Ireland)
Pleasant Miller G.(7 Mar 1804 Chillicothe, Ross Co. Ohio)
William Green G.(10 May 1841 Jalapa, Monroe Co. Tennessee)
Benjamin Finley G. (6 Apr 1873 Tellico Plains, Monroe Co. Tennessee)
Edith Irene G. (15 Jun 1899 Hilleview, Ill. My grandmother)

I do have a copy of the Pearl Ghormley book "Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow" so lookups can be done. Brunner Land in Tellico Plains back in the 1970's(?) told me of the story of his Abrahams murder as well.

Now that I think about it again, there is another manuscript running around about Bucky Hunt and the settling of the Tellico Plains area. I'll see if I can relocate it (we moved recently and have about 100 boxes still to open).

Hope this has been of use.

David Campbell

I went back and looked and mine comes through Abraham. He became wealthy and in his old age it is believed he was murdered for some jewelry he went to buy in Penn. There is another book put out by Pearl Ghormley. My grandmother contributed to both of these books. I found one on amazon, but they found out it was in demand and asked a very high price.

So glad to hear from you,but there is a misunderstanding. I have a handwritten manuscript on the Ghormley line that was written in the 30's by a Narin Ghormley and given to my grandmother. Its a long story but the first 5 or 6 pages are missing from the beginning. Narin had a daughter and I'm hoping to find those missing pages. I have put my copy into a type form, and I have made it available to interested Ghormleys. It is probably I who can help you! If you would like to contact me my email is smace@wowway.com. I will tell you more and would love to hear what you have. I also have a number of pictures of Ghormleys. SHERMAN

Hello. Although I do not know of the manuscript that you mentioned, I do know of Hugh Ghormley I (1733-1813). He is my 6th great-grandfather. I would be happy to share any of the Ghormley information that I have with you. My decent-line goes through his son Thomas Ghormley (1766-1840). If there is any information that I can help you with, please let me know.

I feel I just hit the jackpot! Narin Ghormley wrote a manuscript on the Ghormleys. Her and Pearl work together on it. My grandmother Charlotte Ghormley Petty contributed many stories to it. I have the original Narin manuscript that I copied and made into a book. I would love to hear aout Pearl's book. I have been offering a copy of Narin's on a memory stick but have had no takers so far. Please call or email me as I would love to hear about Pearl's book. The first 4 or 5 pages of Narin's is missing and I know there has to be another copy out there some where. His son was Micael and his son was William. Naomi married Charles Dwight 7/15/1933 and they had a son Charles Maurice 4/28/34. Narin Ghormley wrote a very good history of the Ghormley's. A cousin of hers also wrote one her name was Pearl Ghormley (Ingle) Do you know anything about them. I can furnish you with a copy of the manuscript smace@wowway.com She may remember Narin or my Gr mother Charlotte Petty.

I have a manuscript that was done on the Ghormley line starting with Hugh Ghormley 1733/1813, who settled in Pa. It was done in the 1930's by Narin Ghormley and is remarkable for the work she did without the aid of a computer. The first 4 or 5 pages are missing. I am looking for them plus any thing of interest on the Ghormley's. If you want a free copy I will give you one. You must mail me a empty memory stick with a self address return package and postage attached to it.(If you have something I can copy of interest you could put that on it. smace@wowway.com Sherman

I have been researching this particular line for the last 2 years, and recently was accepted in the Daughters of the American Revolution throught James Ghormley. So I have varified this information and it has been verified beyond me.
She married James Austin Nutt in Indiana. I would love to have a copy of James Ghormley's diary if possible.
My grandmother, Eleanor (Eldredge) Dodge, just passed away in Nov. My mom, Judy, found several old photo albums which we didn't know existed. I have a couple of photos from the early 1940's which are of a toddler named Danny Ghromley. He has beautiful blonde hair and in one picture, he's sitting on a big German Shepard dog. I would like to find someone who would know who or where he is. I would like to find out if he was family or friend. He would be 64 or so.

I was in Tahlequah, Oklahoma, but my best friend is very ill so I did not get to the cemetary except to take flowers for my parents and grandparents. Since you gave me your home telephone number, I will try to call you later this week. Have you had any luck in finding anything new? Is Naomi's husband buried in Pasadena or in Oklahoma? For some reason, I was thinking that he was buried near Tahlequah, Oklahoma.

Looking for information on John Ghormley that lived in/near Stillwell, OK abt.1906-1907. I have a newspaper article of that date: "John Ghormley and family came in from the river bottom last week and is visiting his nephew, Will May, and other friends in the country. Will May was my grandfather, and this is the only connection I have to find his May family.I don't know relationship -maternal/paternal/by marriage? My Grandfather was William Henry May b.2/10/70 in Kentucy (we think), orphaned ~6 yrs.old, lived with relatives on a farm, married Ida Ann Howard 11/8/1895 in Stillwell,OK, d.10/1/1914. Any information would be greatly appreciated!! E-Mail me at cpunches@poncacity.net

Thanks for the info. It's very interesting. Do you know if these Ghormley's and May's were from Kentucky? The given names are interesting:my father was:Howard E. May b7/19/1904 in Stillwell,Indian Terr.(OK),d.2/26/91 in Ponca City, OK. His brother's name was George Walter May b.7/7/1900 in Stilwell,d.12/30/23 in Sapulpa, OK. Will May (my grandfather) married Ida Ann Howard in Stillwell (Howards came from Rockwood TN). But,I never heard my father mention any family by the name of May in Stillwell. He did mention Uncle John Ghormley, and I found the newspaper article mentioned in my first posting. I found John Ghormley (Roll #1953) on the Final Rolls (Dawes 1898-1902)of Citizens and Freemen of the Five Civilized Tribes in Indian Territory (1898-1902) in Cherokees by Blood - but haven't looked it up yet, so don't know if anything is there. If you should come up with any connection, I would appreciate the info. If I do, I will let you know. Thanks again. Carroll

You know, the info you sent me about John Ghormley is about the right time frame, I guess. Do you know anything about the May family currently in Stillwell? As you can see, my problem is that I really don't know anything about my grandfather (William May) except the story (no documented facts) about him being from Kentucky as an orphan - going to a farm (possibly Aunt and Uncle - where I don't know). I don't know when he got to Stillwell, but that is where he and my grandmother were married and lived at least until he died. The family then moved to Sapulpa OK, but my Dad still visited in Stillwell when I was little, but I don't really remember much about it. In Dad's later years he and Mom visited an old friend (I'm thinking maybe her name was Jenny Goss?.

Thank you for the information on the book. I will check with our local library.

Your Mary Emily (married James May) could be a relative. It's the closest I've come to anything promising.

Idon't think my grandfather (William H. May) actually died in Stillwell (possibly Vinita), but they were living there at the time and his body was brought back there. No death certificate is on file. He is buried in the cemetary in Stillwell. He died Oct. 1, 1914. If it isn't too much trouble, I would be very grateful if you would check to see if there's a funeral home record. In those days I don't know if a funeral home was always involved.

I found my grandparents on the 1900 census in Stillwell: District No. 73, Enumeration District 36, Sheet No. 8. At that time they were farmers and rented. His occupation was "ferrier". I showed that he was born in Kentucky and that his Mother and Father were born there, wife Ida A. mothere of 1 child - none living - born in Tennesse.

My e-mail address is cpunches@poncacity.net. May's wife's family) (Wm.Jefferson and family also lived in Stillwell in that time frame. I found Wm. May on the 1890 Census for Indian Territory, Cherokee Nation, but didn't look up John Ghormley.
I really appreciate your input. I have just started on this search. I will try to find a place to look at old Cherokee Advocate Newspapers. I looked at Cherokee Area 1895 map, and Goingsnake Area is very near Stillwell. It would seem that my John Ghormley would be related to your Ghormley's someway. Is your home Topeka KS? I am not too far south - Ponca City, OK. Please keep me informed if you come up with any connection. It's possible that the May family and Ghormley family were just friends, I guess. My Dad,is brother and Mother moved to Sapulpa after his father died, and lived there until ~1932 when My Dad and our family came to moved to Ponca City.
