My mother's family is from Roseto Val Fortore. Her grandmother's name was Concetta or Costanza Sabatino Curcio married to Leonardo Curcio circa 1865 in Roseto Val Fortore. They emigrated to Roseto, Pa. in the USA. My father, whose family is from Nusco, in the province of Avellino in Campania also had a great grandmother with the surname of Giannini, (Maria Rosa Antonia Luigia) married to Giovanni circa 1835 in Nusco.
Many names, such as Zito, Falcone, etc. may be in the family tree.

Ciao Pat,

The first time I went to Roseto was many, many years ago. I was on a trip through Europe with a friend, and we stayed in Germany with her relatives. We went by train to Venice, then Rome, then Naples and from Naples took a bus to RV. The trip was only about a hundred miles, but it took all day driving through the hills and stopping in every little village along the way.
The last time I went to RV was about 12 years ago. This time I was on another extended trip, first stopping in Athens to visit friends. From Athens I went by train to Patria and took the overnight ferry boat to Brindisi, Italy; then went by train from there to Foggia. In Foggia, there were a couple of daily buses leaving from in front of the train station for Roseto, and as I remember the bus ride was a pleasant one-and-a-half hours. Of course, that was a dozen years ago, so you would want to check the connections ahead of time.
You could check train connections from Rome to Naples and from Rome to Foggia to see which would work best for you. I just remember that the bus ride from Naples to Roseto was long and rather grueling.

I hope this information is helpful, Pat.
You can send the photo to my e-mail address shown above.

Lena

Hi Lena, thanks for the response. Some of my uncles had blue eyes and a kind of dark blonde hair. I have blue eyes and use to have dark blonde or light brown hair. But that also could come from my father's side.
If you send me your email address I will send you a picture of my grandpop Giannini and you can see if there is any resemblence to you ancestors. He was a large man for a Italian.

My grandfather's first name was Filippo or Philip. He was born on 9-9-1880 and came to America on 1-19-03.

Let me know how you got to RV, Italy. Did you fly into Rome and motor to RV.
Thanks - Pat (Giannini) Nicastro

Hello Pat,

No I have not found any German ancestry so far. The records I got from the Municipale go back to the time Italy was united as a country in the 1800s. The few baptismal records at the church I saw went back to the 1700s, but I don't have copies of these records. Every name on the municipal records indicated they were all born in Roseto Valfortore, with the exception of one person who was from the next town.
My father had blue eyes as did some of his siblings (there were 10 all together). My father looked most like the photos I have seen of my grandmother, who also had blue eyes, I believe.
I have always heard that the name Giannini is a rather common one in Italy, and one person told me that the name originated in the Florence area centuries ago, but I have never researched this. I believe I was told that the main church in RV was built in 1100 or 1200, but I don't know how long the village might have existed before that time.
Buon viaggio on your trip to RV. I am always interested in hearing any information about RV, the Giannini ancestors and the Pappano ancestors.

Lena

Also, some of my aunts and uncle's had blue eyes.

Please let me know if you have any information of this nature.

Ciao Connie,
I went to all three cemeteries in Roseto, PA, and all the stones seemed to be in very good condition. The oldest cemetery, I was told, is the one behind the big church. There is another Catholic cemetery at the top of the town, and there is also a Presbyterian cemetery, which had many stones with Italian names. I did not know until then that the Presbyterians had a lot to do with the founding of Roseto.
I went to the City Hall and was told that all the records are kept in the town of Easton, PA, which is several miles south of Roseto. Since it was a rather brief trip for me, and also because I really did not expect to find close relatives there, I did not go to Easton.
On another note, I have been to Roseto Valfortore in Italy several years ago, and before going, I called my distant cousin who was alive there at the time. He asked the Municipale to prepare the birth and death records on both sides of my family. I was very glad he did that, because it took more time than I actually had there. I also went to the church there, and the priest helped me look up some baptismal and marriage records. I gave him a contribution for the church, as he spent about an hour and a half with me. I visited the cemetery there also. Some of the stones are in good shape, and some are not. I saw that some letters were missing from my grandmother's name on her tombstone, so my cousin agreed to make arrangements to have them replaced, and I sent her a check after I returned home.
Hope this information is helpful.

Buon viaggio.

Lena

Hello Pat,
Thanks for writing.

The one tombstone I found was in the older cemetary behind the big church. Written on the tombstone was:

Mary G. Giannini
Cistone
1852--1915

Of course this was of interest to me because my mother went by the name of Mary Giannini. However, she was born Emerinziana (or something similar) Pappano, but the family name somehow got changed to Pappin in the course of my grandfather's trips to and fro, and my Mom changed her first names to Mary Ann.

If you hear of any other information, please let me know also.

Grazie.

Lena

Hi Lena, I am interested in the Tombstone you found in Roseto, Pa. When I visited Roseto last summer I did not find any Tombstones with the name Giannini. Could you let me know where you found it.
I found one Tombstone with my grandmother's maiden name, Pinto.
There must have been a lot of Giannini' from Roseto Val Fortore in the US who are not related to one another. Maybe, it is because there is two branches of the family.
My grandfather immigrated to Bangor, Pa when he arrived in US but then worked and raised his family in North Philadelphia. Keep me informed on any information you find on the Giannini's from Roseto VF, Italy.

Thanks - Pat (Giannini) Nicastro

I found this message board, but none of the messages so far indicate a connection to my father, Stefano Giannini born in Roseto Valfortore, Italy in 1898. My understanding is that there were two separate family branches there with the name of Giannini. Can anyone confirm this?

I visited Roseto Valfortore, Italy, three times: 1960, 1964 and 1992. On the first trip I met my grandfather, Giovanni (known there as "Il Barbuto"), and my uncle and aunt, Gaudenzio and Filomena Giannini. In 1992 I was able to get birth records back to the 1770s (I think) for both my father's family and the Pappano family of my mother, who was born there in 1909.

I visited Roseto, PA last year, but found only one tombstone with the name Giannini on it, and that person was unknown to me. I do know that my father had at one time a cousin named Leonard Giannini in Bangor, PA.
I am always interested in any additional information anyone would have about either of the Giannini families that originated in Roseto Valfortore, Italy.

Thank you.

Sincerely,

Lena (Giannini) Lonigro

Mariano Giannini came to Richmond Virginia about 1820, from Tuscany Italy, married Mahala Hamlet, and they had 13 children. Youngest of these also named Mariano Giannini born 1850. Two others were Franklin P. Giannini and Ferdinand W. Giannini. Remaining 10 children are not known. Senior Mariano died 1864. Younger Mariano migrated to Missouri. I am seeking any information available.

There is a town in Pa called Roseto after Roseto Val f in Italy. Several families from Italy moved there from Roseto Italy in the 1850s. There is a few books ex, Power of Clan by Stewart Wolf and John Bruhn that give history of Roseto Italy and Roseto Pa. My Grandfather Fausto Capobianco left a short bio but died before I was born. Some of the surnames written on town memorial are Falcone, Martucci, Romano, Capobianco. Have you ever been to either Rosetos? I owned some property there until recently.
Connie Capobianco

I am embarrassed to be so many months late in replying to your response. Back again to the 'Giannini" group in Massachusetts to whom I am related several times removed. The pieces of information are as follows - all of which is oral history from my aged aunts: the male's name was Raphael (Ralph), the wife's maiden surname was Nutile - and first name was supposedly 'Julia/Julene or possibly Angelina. They had 5 children (?): Julia, Virginia, Michael and Humbert. Supposedly one or more of the son's attended Yale University. Not sure of graduation. Also oral history indicates that one or more of the son's became a lawyer - practiced in Massachusetts. I have searched every data-base I know of, but find no trace of the males. Understandably, the nnames are obscured through marriage . If there is any possibly that we may be conected (even as remotely as the moon !) let me know so we are not both searching the same data bases. I need to search the 1920 - 1930 census, but do not know the census district numbers in the Boston area to search efficiently. If I can find an index, I might try. I'll be happy to search ones you have not, etc., etc, Again apologies. Tracing a 9 sibling family tree is insanity!!
My ggg grandfather was Giovanni Antonio "Anthony" Giannini, through his son Nicholas who married Amanda "Polly" Pace, through their daughter Catherine who married Hugh David Chisholm.

My father always said that Anthony had been brought over by Thomas Jefferson to set up a winery. Until I read your comments I never could substantiate that. I have found references in Thomas Jefferson's Memorandum books to the effect that he was his gardener, and that he "planted grape vines." However, I had not found any reference to wine. Can you give me further verification of this?

I am interested in the book that you reference about the Gianniny's of Virginia. Where can I get a copy of it?

Thanks,
Agnita Chisholm Moore

Giannini of Virginia, Oregon and California

Thomas Giannini was born in 1829 in Virginia. I know nothing about him until 1869, when he is married to a divorced woman, Mrs. Narrissa Plymale Wilkinson in Jacksonville, Jackson County, Oregon. They lived the first few years of marriage in Jacksonville and in 1877, moved to Alturas, Modoc County, California. They lived in Alturas until the mid 1880's and eventually ended up in Huntington, Baker County, Oregon. Thomas died in Huntington between 1900 and 1910. Narrissa later moved to Portland, Oregon, where she died in 1924.

Of their children:

Edna L. Giannini, born 1872, died between 1877 and 1880 in California
Minnie Giannini, born circa 1874, nothing further known
Della Giannini, born 1878, married 1899 to John Baker, she died 1912 in Portland, Oregon. One child, Charles Goodman
Gabriel P. Giannini, born 1881, died 1896 aged 15

Any help is appreciated. Apparently, by the time Narrissa died in 1924, all of her descendants were dead.

I'm trying to pick up the family history where my dad left off. I'm looking for any information on Lucia & Philip Giannini and their children/relatives. They are my great grandparents. They had 10 children - 7 boys & 3 girls. Their youngest child, George, was my grandfather (my dad was George's youngest child).
