Thank you, Diana!
This sounds like the man that accompanied my grandmother as her mother had come over prior to that time and settled in Guernsey County. If you are interested, I can share some additional information about my grandmother after she came to the US.

Martin Smerek, from Rejdova, born 1881,came to the US in 1903 and settled in Guernsey Co, OH. In 1906 married Susan Berdjar, also from Rejdova, in Guernsey Co. They later moved to Cleveland. I find them in the 1930 census.
Martin's father, also Martin was married to Mary. I have conflicting last names for her (Volko, Zabrel)

Thanks for your reply, Diana! I believe that the Martin Smerek that accompanied my grandmother had settled in the US prior to the time that my grandmother came to the US (1912). It is my understanding that he lived in the Cleveland, Ohio, area. Perhaps there is a connection if your Martin lived in the Cleveland area. Was your mother-in-law's mother's maiden name Giba?

Am trying to research my grandmother and her family. Village of origin was Rejdova (Sarjedo?) in Slovakia (Austria-Hungary). and she was born May, 1901. Her name was Maria Giba as was her mother's (she was born out of wedlock). My grandmother immigrated to the US in 1912 with a man name Martin/Martan Smerek, who was supposedly her uncle. My great-grandmother immigrated to the US in 1907, leaving my grandmother in Rejdova. Any suggestions on how I might be able to trace the Giba lineage back past my great grandmother???? Thanks

Sorry .. computer crashed a while back and never saw your message. Your Louis Takacs may be a brother or father to my 2nd cousins Frank and Irene TAKACS BACSO. The on;y other info I have is Frank and Irene lived in Highland, Indiana as of 1995. They would have been born about the late 1800's or early 1900's in Hungary, we think the BACSO family may have come from a town called Nyirkarasz, near the Slovakia/Ukraine border and came to the US abt. 1911. Please let me know if you find more info. Good Luck!

Let her know that I gave you her e-mail. Also, I am looking at my grandmother's baptismal certificate. She was born 1906. Her birth name is Anna Giba. Parents: Andrew Giba and Maria Bologh. District of Moldava in Cechoslavachia. (that is the way it is spelled) The writting is very hard to read. There is a seal. Some of the words on that seal are: Molslava, Bodvou, Dieoeza Kosicka. The religion is Roman Catholic. I don't know if this info will help or not. THANK YOU>

I assume that what you are wanting to do is to trace your family father back using the Hungarian records. If so, the single most important piece of information you need is the exact town of origin. This should be on the document. Once you have the town, you can determine whether the LDS (Mormons) have microfilmed the church records. If they have, you can build your family tree going back to the 1700's in most cases.

If you write me back with the town name, I will find out whether there are records available. If you can't find the exact town name on the document, you can also try looking it up on the online Ellis Island database.

Beth Long
dnblong@cts.com

I am just beginning a geneology search with very little information to go on. I found the info you posted and because of some information I had, I thought there might be a link. My father is Louis Joseph Takacs. His dad (my grandfahter) was also Louis Joseph Takacs who married Elizabeth Vaslavsky. All lived in PA. at one time and then latter moved to California. Anyway, I don't know if any of this sounds familiar, just thought I would give it a try. Best wishes on your geneology hunt. Alicia

I am currently working with the church records and 1869 Slovakian Census records for the town of Trebisov. Although I am not researching GIBA, I see the name in the records very frequently. Is this a common Slovakian surname?
