I am also researching the Bart Gibbons/Sally Vickery family. The family Bible lists the parents of Bart Gibbins/Gibbons as Jim Gibbins and Sarah Stealy. Bart was born in 1881, according to his WWI registration papers. The line I'm researching is Bart & Sally's daughter Frances E. Gibbins. I've not been able to locate a marriage for Bart & Sally; I've not been able to locate Jim & Sarah Stealy Gibbins. How many times did Jim Gibbins marry?

To carolyn13368, my original post was back in 2002. That you have come through with information so many years later is, on one hand, astonishing and on the other a potential break through in locking down the relationships between the Shepheard and Kirby families.

The Kirby, Shepheard and Bliss families, in and around Blakesley, married and intermarried over several generations from the 1700's. Generational (re)usage of forenames, large families and degrees of 'migration' to neighbouring villages have conspired to hide the trail from researchers in the land of OZ.

Are you able to provide any reliable links between the three families?

Mike Kirby

My grandfather's mother was Margaret Anna Breit, b. 1873 youngest daughter of Frederick and Cellistina (Turpin) Breit. She married William Arthur Gibbins b.1876 son of ER Jr and SE (Ridgeway) Gibbins. They were both from the Savannah, MO area & are buried there. I have some very old photos, some of which are the Gibbins family, others I can not identify and believe may be Breit's. Is there anyone near the KCMO area that can look at them? If not, I have slowly been getting them scanned and could have them viewable online at some point. (one is attached) Thank you for any help you can give.

There may be a connection there because some of my research led me to beleive that Josephine had a brother named Marcellus. I could be wrong about the name Hannah or John might have had a second wife. I have very little information about that side of my family. I keep hitting dead ends.

How exciting!!! Troy GIBBINS (if the same as my Troy GIBBINS) is my husband's cousin.
His p. grandmother was Ella Katherine GIBBINS, who m. Samuel Marion BALCH. The following family in Adair county, OK, are the brother, nephew, and niece of Ella Katherine GIBBINS, based on information received from a family member:
1920 Census, Adair county, OK
Vol. 1, ED 2, Sheet 3, Line 39
GIBBINS, Samuel E., M, 49, rented, widowed, W, b. AR, father b. AR, mother b. AR
GIBBINS, Troy M 19 Son, b. MO, father b. AR, mother b. AR
GIBBINS, Ella, F, 13, Dau, b. OK, father b. US, mother b. US
The family lived in Westville, Adair county, OK. Troy was married to Lulu Scraper. Lulu's parents were Sarah Starr and William Scraper, married 5 April 1903. William Scraper was the son of Jesse Leaf and Louisa Scraper. William was born 18 March 1880 and died 1947. Lulu was an American Indian, who had a Cherokee arts and crafts shop (Lu Lu Gibbins Shop) on 59 Hwy South (Rt. 2, Box 90) in Westville, OK. Lula lived until at least the early 1960's.

Ella GIBBINS, was born at Baron (AKA Baron Fork) which is near Westville. Ella married Willie Lee PHIPPS (after 1932) and they lived in his house in Bunch where he was a depot agent for the KCS. She moved to Goldendale, WA, after Willie died. A search of the web reveals Ella M. PHIPPS is buried in IOOF Cemetery: Dec-30-1906 to Dec-11-1992 (The Goldendale Sentinel, Goldendale, WA, issue dated Dec-24-1992).

I have been searching for where the GIBBINS were living in the late 1880's. That is where Ella GIBBINS (the aunt of your Ella GIBBINS who m. Mr. PHIPPS) m. 1871 Samuel BALCH. My husband's father was b. IT in 1896. I understand Ella was b. in AR but cannot find a record.

I also wonder why, in the above census record, the birth location of Troy's parents is different from that of Ella's parents.

I would love to have any data possible on the GIBBINS, as I have only been able to go back to Robert GIBBINS b. ~1828 AL who m. Louisa Mack COOPER d. Fulton co., AR.
Hi Cathy,
My grandmother is Sadie Cagle. She grew up in Baron and Westville and still lives in Adair county in Stillwell. Troy Gibbins was her first cousin. Sadie's grandparents were Samuel & Rose, their daughter Ethel was her mom. I live in Vegas but it just so happens that I am going to Adair county next week to visit Gram. I am going to Downey Cemetery where the Gibbins are buried. I plan on taking lots of pictures and if you want anything in particular, please just ask!

In a later post, I think it was you who referenced Troy Gibbins. I remember being around Troy & Lula when I was little. I have some great old pics of them and the family. When I get back, I will get it all together for you if you want it and I'll tell you all that I know and anything I learn new from Gram.

If anyone needs anything, please let me know! I will be in Adair county; westville, stillwell and baron on Monday Sept. 9th. If you email me I will send you my cell # so if anything comes up last minute, you can reach me.

michellemcintosh@cox.net

Hope this helps someone!
Chris, your information is not correct
There were many Gibbins living in the Cambridgeshire and Northamptonshire areas before 1800, I have traced my family back to the 1700's so far.

Also, the Irish connection is dubious. There is a commercial website which claims that Gibbins has Irish roots (and wants payment for further information). I entered a known French surname, and it told me that it was Irish!

NC married Anna(?) of TN(?)
Samuel b. ABT 1792 NC
Robert b. ABT 1789 NC

In the 1850 census, Samuel and Robert are both living in Clark Co. My ancestor Joseph has died, but he is survived by Anna who is living in the next over county of Hot Spring. The early settling point (1820, 1830) appears to be Antoine, Clark, AR (now in Pike Co.). I am fairly certain that at least two of the three are living there in both of those censuses.

Thank you,

Jody

Hi. You mentioned a Samuel Gibbins. Gibbins and Gibbings were often used by the same person and I have a Samuel Gibbings in my family born 1813 in Bampton Devon. We go back to 1659 in Bampton and back to 1571 in Coldridge Devon England where John Gibbings was the vicar. He signed his name in the parish register as Gibbings and Gibbins. He had 12 children. These records can be read in the Exeter records office. If not related to the Devon Gibbings's (there were none outside Devon in England before 1800) then it must be Co Mayo in Ireland. I believe the Gibbings clan came to England in 1066 as paid soldiers for William the Conqueror under the leadership of "Strongbow" a well known Irish clan leader. All the best.
Hi. No direct relation but all Gibbings or Gibbins in UK started in Devon. Before 1800 there were none outside Devon except in Co Mayo Ireland. I have traced the Gibbings name back to a John Gibbings living in Coldridge Devon in 1571. He was the Vicar of Coldridge Church and had 12 children. I have established my link to John and my side were millers who moved to Oakford and then Bampton Devon where I have a family tree dating back to 1659. I have met a family in Perth W Australia who also have direct links John in Coldridge. The problem is even with an uncommon name there were many children and even John Gibbings sometimes signed himself Gibbins in the Coldridge parish register which I have read and is on file at Sowton Exeter records office.
