Sam,

Again - I concur with both Cyndi and Susan. The GIBBS Surname DNA Project, is going to be of more assistance to you. And your results are transferable to the Lost Colony project. Nelda and Roberta are very talented and have been wonderful to work with.

David C. Gibbs - Boise, ID

Nat,

The Gibbs DNA project at Family Tree is a good one to join.
You not only get to be a part of this research but if you want to, the same dna can go toward the "Lost Colony research" also...no extra charge...it is up to you of course, but this Gibbs project is run by some dedicated researchers who will aid you in you in any way they can...
No, I do not get paid to say this.... :)
Best of luck in your research..
Susan in SC

Hi Sam

Not sure i understand your question: the Gibbs DNA surname project is tested thru FamilyTreeDNA. It has a separate website which i gave you in last post. FamilyTreeDNA not only has the oldest and biggest database, but also tests the most markers, and keeps your DNA "on file" so as new tests are developed/discovered, you don't have to resubmit samples. In my view, they also have the best communications of all the testing companies! (No, I don't work for them!)

For best results, test the oldest Gibbs family member you have. I don't mean oldest chronologically, but the oldest generation Gibbs living in your line (mutations can happen at any point--thought they're rare--and you want to get as close to your immigrant ancestor as you can in your test. Also, if you can afford it, go straight for the 67 marker testing. It's cheaper of you order it all at once--and you're pretty much guaranteed in this project to want all the markers you can get for comparison. (You can do it in stages if you prefer to stretch out payments over time but it will cost a bit more). Again, I'll mention that this sale going on now is going to be the best deal you're likely to find...

Good luck with it--and have fun! I love genetic genealogy!

Cyndi in Baltimore
member of Gibbs project, but I also administer 27 others!

I do appreciate the feedback. I was hoping either John Martin's ancestors would be in someones tree, or someone had something on what happened to him after he left his wife Angelina -- I think he might have moved back to the Carolina's.
As I said, I am looking at the DNA projects. My current research is valid as it is based on family bibles, etc, but it would be nice to get further.
Which DNA project do you all recommend? It looks to me like the GIbbs Surname Project would be best, with the Family Tree group having a few less Gibbs's, or am I wrong? Have any of you participated in the Roanoake 'Lost Colony' project? I understand they can utilize some of the dna findings, but not a lot of it? Has anyone gotten anything helpful by participating in that also?

Thanks for your help
Sam Gibbs

Sam,
I have to concur with Cyndi...the test will assist you in determining which lineage group, or researcher you should be working with... Susan Gibbs Martin is stuck with her Capt. Cannon Gibbs and you could descend from that branch. You could return a sample similar to Mr. Hoboy's Gibbs -or- you could match the lineage of a sample for the "John York Gibbs" who was also in Burke County, NC before moving to KY.

There are three other groups you could match to - the large group of descendants and cousins of "The Rev. John Gibbs" also in Burke County, N.C. and report as a Haplogroup of E1b1b1c1a; then there is the large Gibbs Family of the descendants of Henry Gibbs (Hyde County) which grew and spread out into Georgia, Alabama, TN and KY. They report as a J2 haplogroup. Then finally we have a participant who started in North Carolina and relocated to TN and KY and reports as an I1. I forgot a known, yet untested Gibbs lineage; which descends from the early Provencal Governor Robert Gibbes, who was birthed in County Kent, England; traveled to Barbados with is parents.

So, that gives you at least Seven different lineages which could be simply reduced to a known path to track. Finding a "Distant" cousin, working on the same path, helps fill in gaps of information.

Cyndi was the first Gibbs sample for the Descendants of Thomas Gibbs, of Sandwich, Barnstable Co., MA - Her leadership allowed for us to have a base to work from. We were able to set a Benchmark for Thomas, because two other descendants from two different Sons, matched 37/ to 37 markers. I descend from Mathew Gibbs of Charlestown and Sudbury, MA. My DNA matched the same Haplogroup and Allele signature proving that Mathew and Thomas are related somehow! This gives us hope of proving this lineage group.

I highly encourage you to walk down the DNA path - Trust me that it will help reduce your search efforts.

David C. Gibbs
a 10th generation American
Boise, ID

Sampson Gibbs was my GG Grandfather. He was born in 1802 in Sampson County, North Carolina the son of Thomas and Nancy Gibbs. He moved with his family to Irwin County, Georgia when it was first laid out and became one of the first settlers.Sampson was married there February 14, 1822 to Ruth Durham who was born in Georgia in1803. She was the daughter of Jacob Durham, another early settler in Irwin County. Sampson and Ruth had 8 children.

I have additional information on this couple -- too much to email. I will be glad to send it through mail. Contact me, if interested, at ngibbs@gt.rr.com

Hi Sam,

Why wait? I spent years tracking one of my lines, but when I did DNA testing, I found that I was completely unrelated to the group I'd been searching! It's a great way to narrow down your search and to find people you match (cousins!)

The (oldest & biggest?) Gibbs DNA project is thru FTDNA who happens to have just announced a holiday sale so it's a good time to order. Even if you're not ready to test, get your kit at the reduced price while you can...

My own Gibbs line is out of Mass, NY, and TN so I'm not likely to match you, but I really encourage you to test! See the results at: http://www.wnconline.net/~hermes/gsdnap/findings.html
(I'm in the pink group)

Cyndi in Baltimore

There are more than one of these, but I am using Family Tree for my Gibbs line.
These researchers are very helpful in guiding you with this project....If you cannot find what you need, maybe you will give the dna testing a try...
David Lee Gibbs is the webmaster for the Gibbs DNA testing at Family Tree, and his e-mail address is dgibbs6640@verizon.net...
He has been a big help to me...
Best of luck in your research for Gibbs..
Susan Gibbs Martin
Hi Susan. No, I have nothing beyond the McMinn Co., Tenn census showing his birth as N. Carolina. I have been looking at known lines of Gibbs from the Carolina's but of course many of the children were never documented, and I assume that is why I am having so much trouble.
He was a printer, bought printing equipment and was involved with printing a newspaper, which makes me wonder if his family had the same background, but it seems too weak of a link for me to follow.

Sam

hello. trying to find some links oh John Martin Gibbs who was born 1807 in North Carolina. He married Angelina (possibly her maiden name was Catron/Kettering). They lived in McMinn Co., Tennessee by the mid-1830's, with several deed transactions occurring.
Their children were Samuel J. (not Samuel C.), Emila, John Martin, William P., Susan, Elizabeth, Louisa M, and Rachel M.
I have always suspected his mother's maiden name was Martin; no documentation, but the middle name 'Martin' is very common.
His son John Martin and his wife Angelina moved to Wise Co., Texas, and are buried their. He did not move with them.
Any help would be great!

Sam Gibbs

Hello Kathy, since Dec of 2005 have you found any more information on son of Cason and Nancy Lockhart, Jordan A.??

I believe he is my brick wall and my g g g g grandfather. My g g g grandfather William J Gibbs, is listed on the 1850 and 1860 AL census as being born in TN, but an elderly lady with him, Nancy A Gibbs, a widow, was born in the Carolinas (can't remember if it was NO or So.) I am sure she is his mother or grandmother. He had 3 sons, John Wesley (my g g grandfather). James M. and Richard Franklin. Richard named on of his sons Jordan. I have searched for about 8 years and have just recently put some ideas together and believe that Henry, Joseph, Cason and Jordan A. are the fa. and gr fathers of my William. The years fit perfectly along with some family names. I have ruled out many other Gibbs lines.

I know most of the Gibbs were born in NC, but was not part of TN really NC at one time?? William's wife was born in
MD. Also, I have found only one other piece of info on William, he died in the Civil War. On his wife's papers, it says he was born in GA. So, the person giving his birth place, may have not know where he really was born.

I also found Uriah, Jesse and others living in TN in the early 1800"s. I feel William was there with them. But died before the 1850 census was taken.

If you have any thing to ad to my information, I would really appreciate it.

Thank you,

Anita Sue

Hello, I think I have a great deal of information on the Gibbs line you mention in your post. I thought this was my family when I first started my research about 8 years ago.
A "cousin" in GA finally told me that none of my family info was in her research. But, we have always felt the two lines were related. After reading your post, I am thinking more and more this may be true. Was the John you met in the cattle business??

I have about an inch of paper on this John's line. I will share with you if you would like. Also have some on the Pettit/Clayton part of the Gibbs line. I have written Chris on this thread. I put all my family info in that post.

Look forward to hearing from you.

Anita Sue in Alabama

Craven County was the first stop for many of the Gibbs family leaving Hyde County . The family in Boaz may be related to the family I found in or near Arab Alabama but they have no knowledge, no records and no interest. They own Arab Livestock Market and seem to think anyone claiming to be a relative is runing a scam or something.

Anita Sue, All I can tell you is that I have Nancy Lockhart marrying Cason Gibbs Sr in 1785 in Hyde County. Her father was Jordan Lockahrt who died around the same time. Nancy was not my ancetor (Cason's first wife, Phebe Harris, was)so that is all I know. Hope it helps.
