Mary Lillian Young Gibson, 97, of Clairton, departed this life peacefully Monday, Feb. 18, 2013, in the Jefferson Regional Medical Center, Jefferson Hills. She was born Nov. 11, 1915, in Petersburg, Va., and was the daughter of late Joseph and Elnora Ridley Young. She was also preceded in death by her late husband, Alma J. Gibson; and siblings, Geraldine Young, Hilda Johnson Sinnett and Alfonso Young. She was a licensed practical nurse from St. Francis Hospital, where she retired after 22 and a half years. A 1934 graduate of Clairton High School, she returned to school in 1966 and became a licensed practical nurse. "Mother Gibson" as she was referred to in the community, served at Gethsemane Church of God in Christ as a Sunday school and YPWW teacher and as secretary for the Uniontown District and the State YPWW. She was appointed administrative assistant at Gethsemane and District Missionary under the Uniontown and Washington districts. Other positions she held were state counselor of the volunteer mission department, Jurisdiction 1 of Western Pa. and national secretary for this group, state secretary of the women's department and member of the executive board of Western Pa. Jurisdiction 1. Surviving are her son, Richard (Marguita) Thompson, of Kissimmee, Fla.; nieces, nephews, cousins, godchildren, other relatives, church family and many, many friends. Friends will be received from 4 to 9 p.m. Friday, Feb. 22, 2013, at the Gethsemane Church of God In Christ, 200 Crest St., Clairton, where services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 23, 2013, with Evangelist Dr. Bernadette Jeffrey officiating and Bishop James J. Foster bringing the eulogy. Interment will follow in the McKeesport and Versailles Cemetery, McKeesport. Local arrangements by the ROBERT A. WATERS FUNERAL HOME INC., Clairton. Contributions in lieu of flowers may be made to Sisters Place and the Carver Hall food bank.
