I am a descendent of Paul Giddings (b. 10 May 1809) and Catherine Howe (b. 15 March 1812) and would love a copy of the letter! Paul and Catherine (married 1 May 1833) had a daughter named Eva E. Giddings b. 7 Feb. 1857 (info from Eva's family bible) who married William R. Heath and had daughter Blanche L. Heath who married Thomas F. Peter and had daughter Ida M. St. Peters, my grandmother who recently passed away. As I mentioned I would love a copy of the letter - is there anyway you or someone else could help.

Re: three marriages of Sarah (Giddings) Fitz Knowlton Gould

Sarah Giddings (No. 202) married twice; it was her sister, Bethiah, No. 207, who married three times, ultimately to John Gould.

From my (to be ) Sourced Descendants of Michael Giddings Genealogy:

202.	Sarah7 Giddings (Solomon6, Solomon5, John4, George3, John2 Giddings, Michael1 Guidinge) was born 21 September 1739 in Ipswich, Essex County, Mass., the daughter of Solomon and Sarah (Burnham) Giddings. (Source: Ipswich, Essex, Mass. VRs: Vol. 1, page 158 from ‘Tan Books’).

Much confusion here; both Minot and R/B state that Sarah married three times. She married twice: she married (1) Moses Fitz at Ipswich on 10 February 1757. (Source: Ipswich, Essex, Mass. VRs: Vol. 1, page 182 from ‘Tan Books’). Moses was born 25 October 1730, the son of John and Hannah (Bosworth) Fitz. (Source: Ipswich, Essex, Mass. VRs: Vol. 1, page 140 from ‘Tan Books’). He died 19 August 1774. (Source: Ipswich, Essex, Mass. VRs: Vol. 2, page 556 from ‘Tan Books’).

Minot, page 35, says that they had four children [M157 – 160] and R/B reiterate this with the rider that ‘Sarah had seven other children but which husband was the father of these is unclear’. (Pages 47 and 48). However the Ipswich VRs show the following:

i.	1758	Sarah Fitts; baptised at Ipswich, 12 February 1758. Her death is not recorded
but is presumed by the baptism of another Sarah in 1760. (VRs: Vol. 1 page
140).
ii.	1760	Sarah Fitts; baptised at Ipswich, 16 November 1760. (VRs: Vol. 1, page 141).
iii.	1762	John Fitts; (Minot’s No. 157.) born at Ipswich, 27 August 1762. (VRs: Vol. 1,
page 140). He died at Ipswich, either December 1774 or 19 April 1787. (VRs: Vol. 2, page 555). Minot says that he ‘died unmarried’ and not ‘died young’ so the latter date is more probable.
iv.	1764	Hannah Fitts; baptised at Ipswich, 03 June 1764. (VRs: Vol. 1 page 139).
v.	1766	Moses Fitts; (Minot’s No. 158) baptised at Ipswich, 09 Mar 1764. (VRs: Vol.
1 page 140).He married Rebecca Giddinge [No. 349] at Gloucester, Essex, Mass., on 28 Febuary 1790. Rebecca was born 25 April 1768 at Gloucester, the daughter of Andrew and Elizabeth (Davis) Giddinge.
vi.	1770	Eliza(beth) Fitts; baptised at Ipswich, 07 January 1770. (VRs: Vol. 1 page
139).
vii.	1771	Eunice Fitts; baptised at Ipswich, 10 November 1771. (VRs: Vol. 1 page
139). She may be the child who died as shown at viii., below, as her mother
named another child by her second husband Eunice.
viii.	1773	Unnamed Child Fitts; died 01 June 1773 at Ipswich. (VRs: Vol. 2 page
556).
ix.	1774	David Fitts; (Minot’s No. 159.) born at Ipswich, 19 July 1774. (VRs: Vol. 1,
page 139). Minot says that he died unmarried but his death is not shown in Essex, Mass., VRs.
x.	Bethiah Fitts; Minot’s No. 160, he says that she died unmarried. Her birth and
death are not shown in Essex, Mass., VRs.

Sarah (Giddings) Fitts married (2) Abraham Knowlton. On 04 September 1777 at Ipswich, Essex. (VRs: Vol. 2, page 165).

Sarah had further children by Abraham Knowlton:

xi.	1776	Eunice Knowlton; (Minot’s No. 162) baptised at at Ipswich, 17 August 1776.
(VRs: Vol. 1 page 226). Eunice may have been the child of Abraham and
his previous wife. Minot (page 35) says ‘went to Kennebunk, Me., [Maine].’
xii.	1789	Lois Knowlton; (Minot’s Louisa, No. 161) baptised at at Ipswich, 29 March
1778. (VRs: Vol. 1 page 227). Lois married William Safford 02 April 1801 at Ipswich, Mass. (VRs: Vol. 2 page 264). Minot (page 35) says ‘went to Kennebunk, Me., [Maine].’
xiii.	1780	Cyrus Knoulton; (Minot’s No. 164) baptised at at Ipswich, 11 June 1780.
(VRs: Vol. 1 page 225).
xiv.	1782	Agnes Knowlton; (Minot’s No. 163) baptised at at Ipswich, 11 August 1782.
(VRs: Vol. 1 page 226). Agnes married Daniel Hodgeson of Wells, [int. Kennebunk] 11 February 1810 at Ipswich, Mass. (VRs: Vol. 2 page 263). Minot (page 35) says ‘went to Kennebunk, Me., [Maine].’

The other children supposed by R/B (pages 47 and 48) to be those of Abraham and Sarah (Giddings) (Fitts) Knowlton were those of Abraham Knowlton and his previous wife, also Sarah, as follows:

1763	John Knowlton (Minot No. 165); baptised 06 February 1763 at Ipswich and shown by Linebrook Parish Records. (|Ipswich VRs: Vol. 1 page 227).
1767	Eben(ezer) Knowlton (Minot No. 166); baptised 18 January 1767 at Ipswich. (|Ipswich VRs: Vol. 1 page 227).
‘Rebecca Knowlton (Minot No. 167), m. John Boardman, of Topfield’ shown
by Minot (page 35) does not appear in marriage records of Ipswich or
Topsfield.

Abraham Knowlton died 02 October 1797 at Ipswich, Mass. (Ipswich VRs: Vol. 2, page 608)

Sarah (Giddings) (Fitts) Knowlton died a widow at Ipswich 28 September 1821 at 82 years of age. (Ipswich VRs: Vol. 2, page 609)

Sarah Giddings married twice; it was her sister, Bethiah, No. 207, who married three times, ultimately to John Gould.

207.	Bethiah7 Giddings (Solomon6, Solomon5, John4, George3, John2 Giddings, Michael1 Guidinge) was born 18 July 1749 in Ipswich, Essex County, Mass., the daughter of Solomon and Sarah (Burnham) Giddings. (Ipswich VRs: Vol. 1, page 158).

Bethiah married three times: she married (1) John Bodman [Bordman in IGI, Burnham in Minot, Broadman in Gloucester VRs] of Topsfield on 08 November 1770 at Ipswich, Mass. John was born 24 September 1748 (Ipswich VRs: Vol. 1, page 158), the son of John and Elizabeth (Cagwin/Kegwin) Bodman. John died at 22 years of age, on 28 January 1771, two months after his marriage.

Bethiah married (2) Josiah Fitts on 20 February 1739 at Ipswich, Mass. (Ipswich VRs: Vol. 2, page 48); he was born 22 July 1739 at Ipswich, Mass, (Ipswich VRs: Vol. 1, page 140), the son of John and Hannah (Bosworth) Fitz and brother of Moses who married her sister’s daughter, Rebecca Giddinge. He died 07 October 1776 some seven months after his marriage to Bethiah. (Ipswich VRs: Vol. 2, page 555).

Bethiah married (3) John Gould.on 03 June 1777 at Ipswich, Mass. (Ipswich VRs: Vol. 2, page 164)

Minot (page 36) says that Bethiah had four children: James, Lucretia, Bethiah and Louis. R/B (page 48) copies Minot but adds that the fatherhood of these children is unclear.

Minot page 36 has children of Bethiah and John Burnham but offers no source, date or location. R/B page 48 copies Minot and adds that the fatherhood of these children is unclear. No marriage of John Burnham to any Bethiah is shown in Ipswich Records.

Minot shows, but offers no source, date or location:
M182 James, m. Miss Knowlton.
M183 Lucretia, m. Robert Baker.
M184 Bethiah, Daniel Boardman.
M185 Louis, d. unm.

James [Burnham], and Lydia Knowlton of Hamilton, [married] at Hamilton, Nov. 6, 1798. (Ipswich
VRs; Vol 1, page 30).
Daniel Boardman. Ipswich VRs; Vol. 1, page 59 show Bethiah [Burnham], d. John [4th. PR5] and Bethia, bp. Oct. 9, 1737. CR4.

There is no evidence that Bethiah had children by John Bodman or by Josiah Fitts. She was married to Josiah Fitts for barely seven months so unless she bore quadruplets she could not have had the four children suggested by Minot. Therefore any children that she did have must have been sired by John Gould. There is no evidence of this in the Essex records. We must therefore conclude that Minot has confused the Burnham children as being born to Bethiah and John Borman, and that Bethiah (Giddings) (Borman) (Fitts) Gould had no children at all.

Domesday is on the internet; it costs about £3.50 per download.
Source: http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/domesday/

I have the appropriate volumes in facsimile from published by Phillimores.

The name derives from Golda/Gode in the Gidding villages near Huntingdon, England. The villages have a web site if you search. I have photos of the churches and landscape.

Golda and Son held lands extensively prior to the Norman Conquest in 1066, some from Queen Edith, wife of Edward thenConfessor. Golda could be male or female, but in this case was probably female and was probably a widow,as she held the lands jointly with her son. The inference is that he was a minor, as women would noyt hold land in their own right in those feudal times. She retained only those lands near Huntingdon after the conquest.

Give me your e-mail address and I'll send them 'cos I don't think this format allows attachments.

The Giddings book is by Ralph and Bland Giddings but has obvious errors and contains very few references so is pretty useless as a genealogical source except for a possible family framework.

Doug Giddings
dsgiddings@yahoo.co.uk

Ralph and Bland Giddings took their information from “The English Origin Of George Giddings Of Ipswich Massachusetts" by David L. Greene. This document has some merit but the begining part is incorrect.

Green assumed that the family came from Clapham, Beds but they were from Henlow, Beds. viz:

7.	Richard2 Gidding (Michael1 Guidinge) was baptised at Henlow,
Bedfordshire on 16 Jun 1585. Richard was the son of Michael and Katherine (Neegoose) Gidding. (Source: Transcript of Henlow Parish Registers 1558 – 1812; Bedford R.O.)

Richard Gidding married Mary Whitman 22 Jan 1620 at Clapham, Bedfordshire. (Source: Transcript of Clapham Parish Registers 1603 – 1812; Bedford R.O.)

Richard Gidding & Mary (Whitman) are known to have had five children baptised at Clapham as follows:
23.	i.	1620 Elizabeth3 Gidding; 13 December 1620.
24.	ii.	1622 Mary3 Gidding; 01 December 1622.
25.	iii.	1623/24 Male3 [torn]; 27 February 1623/24.
26.	iv.	1629 Richard3 Gidding; 12 April 1629.
27.	v.	1634 Michael3 Gidding; 14 September 1634.

(Source: Transcript of Clapham Parish Registers 1603 – 1812; Bedford R.O.)

Richard Gidding was the principal heir of his father and mother and his children are mentioned (not by name) in the will of his sister. Thomas Purrier must have thought more highly of him than he did of his son-in-law, Robert Phage as he made him executor of his will and one of those responsible for rearing George Gidding. Although the Clapham Manorial Roll of 18 January 1620/1 mentions that “if Richard Giddinge shall goe & dwell out of this parish…then he maye lett his Commons to the Inhabitants of this Mannor and to no other,” he apparently did not leave Clapham and is mentioned in the rolls to 1637. (Source: David L. Greene.)

Richard Guidin was buried at Oakley, recorded at Clapham, 29 April 1657. (Source: Transcript of Clapham Parish Registers 1603 – 1812; Bedford R.O.)

His widow Mary was probably the widow shown as:

Widow Guidin buried at Oakley, recorded at Clapham, 21 April 1660.
Anita: Thanks for the reply. Any additional information you have on Grandma Huckabay's kids would be appreciated. I think I stated that Amos Z. was my grandfather. I never met him as he died the year before I was born. I knew Lester Shields, Pink and saw Emma Lou. My mother was interested in me getting the Huckabay geneology. She passed away last December. So I'm still trying to fulfill her wish. Look forward to hearing from you.
Harriet

Giddings Family Missing in Alberta, Canada!

I have located my Giddings family on a 1906 census for Alberta Canada. From there I can find nothing related to any of the following family members. Perhaps someone out there can query the death records for Alberta's Galgary district between 1904 and 1916 to see if there is any marriage or death records pertaining to either of the following individuals?

Mother Mary A. Giddings b.1857
Daughter Maud Giddings b 1889
Daughter Mary Giddings b 1892
Daughter Alma Giddings b.1897

Mother was born in England while the 3 daughters were all born in Galgary. Help
