I don't have a date for the marriage of Barton Gidley and Desire Pearce, but I can let you have a large family tree of all the Gidleys I have found on Barton's tree. His father was Jasper Maudit Gidley, and he belonged to one of the largest branches of the Gidleys. If you look at my contact details on the Gidley One Name Study profile page at http://www.one-name.org.uk, you can e-mail me direct.

The gidley name appears mostly in Dutchess county Ny in that time period. It is rare in Albany. Also in tracking barton he appears in alleghany county, NY in 1840 and Michigan in 1850 census. The 1860 census idicates that desire was born in Vermont. Try there for marriage. also look for any Pearce genealogies that may have been published for her origins.

Sarah, dau Wm. and Phoebe Gridley of Saratoga, and d. 2 1st of 3d mo., 1843, at Peru, Ohio."

Several Gidleys married Moshers and they also married Benedicts in Peru, Morrow County, Ohio. They were all Quaker families.
The Quaker families tended to move together in groups.
I know some of them settled in a community in Winnieshiek, Iowa and also in Raisin, Michigan.
I have some family letters written by Cynthia Benedict Grisell Rogers and also a letter she received from her mother, Sarah Gidley Benedict Hole.
Hi,
I am also descended from William Gidley and Phoebe Mosher, though their daughter, Sarah Gidley, born about 1800 in New York (I think). I know she was Quaker and married Adin Stevens Benedict of Peru, Morrow County, Ohio. She remarried, to a Jonah Hole, and died in a Quaker settlement in Winnieshiek, Iowa where her daughter Cynthia Benedict Grisell Rogers was living. I am descended from Cynthia's son, Arthur Curtis Rogers.

I have a quite a bit more information about the Gidley/Benedict line that I can share if you're interested.

I would love to know more about the Gidleys and Moshers if you have that information.

My email is alicerogers2006@comcast.net.

Alice

I would love more information on the Gidleys, and I'll see if I have any more transcribed letters.
Sorry if I implied that all the Gidleys were Quaker. I just know that the branch I descended from was Quaker and that I've been able to trace them along with Benedicts and several other families who moved together to various Quaker settlements.
Thanks!
Alice

Late 60s as in 1960s, or as in 1600s? Guess it depends on the amount of research you have done. I have back to the late 1700s, am looking for previous to that.

"My" William Gidley was married to Phoebe Mosher in February of 1799 in Saratoga, NY and died 18 April 1855 in Morrow County, Ohio. His father was Content Gidley. His son was Moses Gidley, who married Ruth R Wood in Delaware County, Ohio in 1840 and died in the Lansing, Michigan, area. Doesn't sound like much of a match unless you know of some way of connecting through brothers or cousins. Would love to hear if you do!

Judith,

Thanks so much for you information. I really appreciate it! I wasn't expecting so much help. I am just starting trying to document some of my family history, so I am sort of new to all of this. I actually made a mistake in my original post in that I stated that my grandfather's name was Earl and not Wayne. I knew that but I think I was mixed up with my father's middle name. In any case, thanks again and I will post my full family history up to present once I get everything organized.

Also, I am not sure if I mentioned this, but my surname was changed to Abbott as a result of my step father adopting me at age eleven. So for documentation purposes, it should be noted that my real father was William Earl Gidley. Most of my siblings live in south Texas now. I now live in Australia with my wife Crystal.

Brad Abbott

I am just starting to research my family. My father was William (Duke) Earl Gidley born in Wabash, Indiana and was originally married to my mother, Daine Lucille Turner, both born in Wabash, Indiana. My grandmother's name was Elizabeth (not sure if this is correct)and my Grandfather's name is Earl Gidley. I am not sure, but my family may have come from Alabama. I am trying to find out from which country my family originally immigrated. I was actually adopted and have had my name changed to Abbott. So, I would like to research my birth family origin before it is lost somehow.

Thanks!

Brad

Re: Gidley From Wabash, Indiana

I have checked my Gidley references from the American census, and have found Earl Gidley born in Indiana in abt. 1883. Thanks to Bryan's useful reply to your posting, it does seem that he was your great grandfather through his son Wayne b abt 1918 in Indiana.
Putting all the information together, Earl Gidley was the son of William Asro Gidley. Earl's World War I draft registration card gives his name as Ervia Earl Gidley born 5 Dec 1882, a moulder of 1232 Pike St, Wabash, next of kin was his wife Lena Leone Gidley. They had at least 8 children.
Earl's father William Asro Gidley was born on 29 May 1852, and was married twice. Earl's mother was Lillie B Lambert. They had about 7 children.
William Asro was the son of William Lothar Gidley and his wife Lucinda nee Tombaugh, who were living in Pleasant, Wabash County in 1870. There were 7 children in their family, all documented on various Tombaugh genealogy sites, which you would find very useful.
William Lothar Gidley was born in about 1817 in Virginia, according to the 1850 census. He married Lucinda on 12 Feb 1836, probably in Pennsylvania, as Lucinda's parents and the rest of their family set off for Indiana the following year. As he was born in Virginia, William Lothar Gidley is probably therefore descended from John Gidley, transported to Maryland after being convicted of stealing a bale of cotton in Crediton, Devon, in 1769.
And that's where the trail stops at present, I'm afraid. Do look at the Gidley profile at http://www.one-name.org/Profiles, where I have put some information about all the various Gidley families, including yours.
Pamela
I don't have quite all the American census details yet, but I can see your father on my index to the 1930 census for Lawrence with his parents Albert E Gidley born Massachusetts about 1901, mother Nellie E born abt 1900, and sisters Dorothy G b abt.1919 and Shirley E born abt. 1929. Unfortunately I can't trace your grandfather in what I have of the 1910 census (and that doesn't mean he isn't there, just that I haven't got it yet).
Now the Gidleys in Massachusetts are mainly descended from a settler/settlers in the 17th century. If you look at my Gidley profile on the Guild of One-Name Studies website (www.one-name.org), you will see a brief description. But Lawrence was a bit different, and its textile mills seem to have attracted much later settlers in the 19th century, including some Gidleys from Buckfastleigh and Dean Prior in Devon, where they had already been involved in the woollen industry there. Two brothers, for example, Frederick and Samuel Gidley, emigrated to Lawrence in about the 1890s and lived in Spruce St. And I think there were others too.
Do you have any family traditon of where your family originated?
You can get my e-mail address from the Profile web page, as I should like to hear details of your family.

I don't actually have the names you mention on the Cornish tree which I've compiled, but if you look at Bryan's website at http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Estates/4294/, then I think you will find his contact details. I have built up a tree of the Gidleys from Massachusetts and New York, which includes the Gidleys from Peru, Morrow County, Ohio. There are still some Gidley family members in Peru I cannot fit on to it, so if you like to look at the Gidley Profile at the Guild of One Name Studies website, and use my contact details at the bottom of the Profile page to contact me, I will send you what I have, and perhaps you may know where some of those missing Gidleys fit in.
The letters sound very interesting, and I would love to hear about them.
Not all Gidleys in the USA were Quakers, though.
