Herman Giese was my great-grandfather and Peter Christian (known as Chris) Giese was my great-uncle. Their mother was not Maria Hunzinger. If you check the 1925 census for Iowa, you will see Maria Hunzinger was the mother of Elizabeth Trendel, Chris's wife.

Herman and Chris's mother was Frieda Amelia Christianson (the 1925 Iowa census spelled her last name as Phrestian). She was born in Germany, not Switzerland.

Herman and Chris had three sisters: Clara, Edna, and my grandmother Florence Viola Giese.

Thank you for the additional information Christa...

Unfortunately, I have not been involved in this process very long and my Grandmother, whom is my link to the Giese, is not very well and unable to provide me any information.

I did find some additional information for Herman via the following link:

http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~wiocgs/suring/Deaths.htm

Per the information on this link, August is buried in the Maple Valley Cemetary (Oconto County WI),however I found another public tree which I believe may have been done by another distant family member which has his burial place as Hickory which is also in Oconto County. I don't have any information regarding Ernetine's resting place.

I cannot say thank you enough for the information you have noted as it is quite a bit more than I had any knowledge of. I will keep in touch and hopefully be able to touch base with you again to obtain more.

Most of the information that I have in regards to the Giese brothers is from a small book titles "Glimpses Into Suring's History" by Bruce K. Paulson. They helped found the town of Suring back in the late 1800's-early 1900's. Herman was one of the six original voting members in the Mount Olive Lutheran Congregation which was organized in 1923. The first Mount Olive Lutheran Church was built in 1925. Prior to that the residents of the area would attend services at either St. John's Lutheran in Hayes or Trinity Lutheran Church in Maple Valley. Maybe this information can lead you to some additional answers regarding Herman's family.

Thanks again,
Rhonda

Hello Rhonda,

I can give you some information on August Giese's siblings and parents. I am related to his mother. We share the same maiden name. She is my great-grand aunt, according to Family Tree Maker.

My great-great-grand parents Christian Friedrich PLITZKOW (b. 1785, exact place unknown) and his wife Marie Eleonore STRESEMANN (b. 1792, exact place unknown) had a daughter, Dorothea Luise Friedericke Plitzkow. She was born in Sassenhagen, Kreis/County Saatzig, Pomerania, Germany on 5 January 1829 and is their sixth child.

Dorothea married Daniel Friedrich GIESE (born about 1831) in Vehlingsdorf, Kreis/County Saatzig on 9 February 1855. His father was deceased at the time of his marriage and his name is unknown to me.

Dorothea and Daniel had at least five children:

1. Wilhelm Friedrich Giese, b. 4 March 1855 in Vehlingsdorf, Kreis/County Saatzig, Pomerania, Germany
2. August Friedrich Giese, b. 6 March 1856 in Vehlingsdorf, married 23 December 1885 to Ernestine Wilhelmine Koch
3. Bertha Ernestine Sophie Giese, b. 18 November 1858 in Vehlingsdorf
4. Hermann Daniel Friedrich Giese, b. 8 May 1861 in Vehlingsdorf and died 26 March 1944 in Green Bay, Wisconsin. Burial place is Frostville Cemetery in Oconto County, Wisconsin
5. Carl Friedrich Albert Giese, b. 10 Nov. 1864 in Vehlingsdorf

I have only been able to find August and Hermann in this country and don't know if any of their siblings immigrated.

All place names have been changed to Polish names since the post-WWII border changes when Germany lost Eastern Pomerania to Poland. If you want to know the polish names, I can let you know.

I would like some information as well. Could you please let me know where August and Ernestine are buried. I have been looking at cemetery records online, but I have not been able to find them.

Christa Sobczak

Mabel Giese, born 1902, daughter of Emma, lived Winnebago Co., WI

I have two original 5”x7” studio photographs of “Arwin Karow” and Mabel Giese Karow”, which I’d like to get back to descendants or family members. Photos were taken in Oshkosh (Winnebago Co.) WI. The photo of Arwin was taken in about 1918-1920 and he looks to be about 18 years old; this is possibly his graduation photo. The photo of Mabel is her confirmation or possibly graduation, and she looks to be about age 18. She is wearing a long dress and button shoes; the photo was taken about 1920.

Arwin is in the 1910 census for Vinland (Winnebago Co.), age 9, son of Albert and Emma Karow. Mabel Karow was in the SSDI, showing she was born 3 Apr 1902, and that she died Jan 1969, last living in Milwaukee. In the 1910 census, she was Mabel Giese, living with her mother Emma (born abt 1882) in Winnebago Co., WI.

I also have two other studio photos of Frances Karow, taken in Oshkosh, about 1930, and she looks to be in her late 20s. Both were taken the same day, but are different poses. I could not find Frances in any censuses, so I cannot verify her family relationship.

Get back to me at margerice@prodigy.net if you are related to Mabel Giese Karow, daughter of Emma Giese.

On this site there is info on a Maria Giese married to Johann Knuth. The dates differ a little from yours, but the names and dates of the children seem to match:

http://www.westpreussen.de/retrospect/index.php?m=family&amp...

It states that Johann Knuth was a teacher.

Sabine
My grandfather William/Wilhelm Giese lived in WI. The only record I have of him is on the 1880 census in Princeton, WI. He married a recently widowed woman, Amalia Conrad, and took in her 4 children. William and Amalia had 3 sons, Johann Wilhelm, Edward Anton, and Richard Heinrich.
On the 1900 census Amalia is listed as Amalia Konrad, a widow, in Oshkosh, WI so I have to assume Wilhelm died. There isn't a 1890 census so it's hard to know how long they were married for and when he died.
i cannot find Johann on any census and am not sure if he went by a nick name. Richard was my grandfather and went by the Nickname Henry.

Rev. Henrich Giese is my husband's 5 great-grandfather, Johann (b: 14 Mar 1799) is his 4 great-grandfather m. Elizabeth Cable. We are looking for more information on this family and would appreciate any leads you can give us. We were aware that Henrich Giese was a chaplain for the Hessian troops and that he settled in Berlin, PA, but we were not aware that he was captured at the Battle of Trenton.
Gysi/Giese genetic genealogy project

A group of us Geesey (etc.) researchers have begun a genetic Y-DNA analysis of the Geesey family tree. Our lineage originated in Canton Basel, Switzerland. To date we have identified over a dozen immigrants from Switzerland to America in the 18th and 19th Centuries. While we have not been able to establish conclusive genealogical relationships for many of them, we hope to ascertain whether we are indeed cousins through genetic analysis. We are seeking men with any of the related surnames to join the project by contributing a sample for analysis.

For more information about this project please go to the Gysi Project website at FamilyTree DNA:
http://www.familytreedna.com/public/Gysi/

For more information about our origins in Canton Basel Switzerland go to my website:
http://people.musc.edu/~geesey/GysiLineage.htm

You may also contact me directly via e-mail.
