I am of the same branch of Giffen's referred to in the book "Sentry Hill -Story of an Ulster farm" and also the book written by his grandaughter Isabel Crozier (sister of Joe McKinney Dundee) who lived at Sentry Hill. There was a TV programme made by Ulster TV IN THE 1980's based on the book which unfortunately I have never managed to get a copy of.

Isabel's book William Fee McKinney of Sentry Hill ISBN No 0/9481/54 00 4 has detail of the Giffens. Also see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Giffencastle.jpg

which is in Ayrshire,Scotland --passed by there just yesterday with the Giffen Owl from the original castle sitting on an adjacent mill building.

On Ancestry.com, a search for Lawrence Giffen shows one in the 1930 census in Wirt, WV, married to a Mary J. Birth of Lawrence about 1907. I don't have a subscription so I can't see the rest of the census entry.

On familysearch.org I see a Lawrence Giffen born in Wirt, WV 2 Feb 1905. Parents are David Ottmar and Daisy E. Ahart.
It doesn't show a spouse or children. You might want to poke around on both sites and see what you come up with.

Ann

hi, I'm not at all sure if this will help, but I put in a Google Search for Archibald Greenlees and came up with the following web site.

http://groups.msn.com/fessenden/1911directory.msnw

I know it's out of your time frame, but there is an Archibald Greenlees listed as a private resident of Machrahanish (in Campbeltown, Argyll, Scotland) and also a shipping agent named James Giffen.

There are also a number of Archibald Greenlees and Scottish Jane Giffens named in the IGI. (It is good to remember that the names Jean & Jane & Janet are all interchangeable in Scottish research so it might be worth checking on them as well). If you know where they lived in the US, you may also be able to pick up a census entry.

This may or may not be of help, but good luck with your searching.

Hi!

I am intrigued by your information. I can trace the Giffens in Bassingbourne to the mid 18th century. They also were also free church (non-conformist), (there was a famous incident in Bassingbourn of "the unburied child", a dead child that was refused burial for 5 years as the church refused to bury it and there was no other cemetery. The child lay in a coffin in the corner of the room. Eventually a chapel was built, but was always "looked down on" by the church. When I visited the area, no Giffens are buried in the churchyard, but I did find two graves in the "new" cemetery that was built outside the village.

I am wondering if the Giffens sided with Bonnie Prince Charlie who's army came within 20 miles of London. As Bassingbourn is around 40 miles north of London. perhaps one of the Giffens stayed. There appears to be no other Giffens in England at that time, but I can't find the connection with Scotland.

I look forward to any information you have.

Kind Regards

Carole Giffen

Hi Carole! The Giffen "blue" book as it's affectionately termed is _Giffen - Genealogic Family History of descendents of Robert Giffen and Mary Bane Giffen_ who settled in Big Spring, Pennsylvania, US in 1777. They had been staying in Kildyre prior to voyage with other Covenanters at United Free Church. The book was published by Central Publishing House, Cleveland, Ohio in 1927 - written & collaborated by Rev. J. W. Giffin, D.D., Cleveland, Ohio, USA. It is now available through Higginson Book Company, Salem, Massachusetts, USA.
I'm not sure about this Thomas and Richard Giffen. All the Giffens I'm aware of were from 20 miles southwest of Glasgow. The Giffen House still stands (2 miles west of Giffen Station which is on the Glasgow & Androssan railroad). The castle is long gone.
Some of the Giffens are buried in Kiel Cemetery - deaths in 1785 (Andrew Giffen), 1787 (Agnes Harvie, Andrew's spouse), with a tombstone erected in 1819, etc. The book states that for 100 yrs preceding 1768, all records for the South End were burned.
Does any of this blend with your husband's ancestors? If so, I have much more information.
The general history includes "Walter de Mulcaster obtained the lands of Giffen from the De Morvilles, in the reign of Wm the Lion, and in turned gifted them to his sub-vassal, Alexander de Nenham," - a charter of the late 1100's or early 1200's. EVentually the lands went to Robt Lord of Galloway and others, eventually confiscated by Bruce after the contest for the throne ... John Montgomerie of Eaglesham married Elizabeth, heiress of Sir Hugh de Eglintoun and the property remained in the Montgomeries possession for several centuries, etc.
Giffen Registrations from South End, Argyll start in Oct 24, 1771 Arch, lawful son of John Giffen, of Kildavee. Names/dates from this registration continue through 1818. Then the book picks up with Robert Giffen and family traveling to America in 1777.
Let me know if we have something in common!

Hi!

Thank you for your answer. What is the Giffen "blue" book? This is my husband's family and I have not been researching long. I know that a Thomas Giffen was an overseer on a plantation in Barbados (1651) and another Giffen was a famous Australian cricketer, but our part of the family appear to go back to a Richard Giffen and they mostly lived in Bassingbourn-cum-Kneesworth. My husband's great grandfather moved to Cheshunt, Herts to work at Rochford's nurseries. Some still live in the area.

WE lived in Barrington for some years and were completely ignorant of the fact that our ancestors lived in nearby villages!

I would be glad of any information you have.

Kind Regards

Carole Giffen

My husband's name is Giffen and I have traced his family back to Richard Giffin (spelled wrongly in the records) born in Whaddon in Feb 1793. His father was Thomas Giffen.

I am not aware as yet of anyone emigrating, perhaps someone can help.

Kind Regards

Carole Giffen
