Hello,
my family owns property east of Cincinnati, Ohio with a private family cemetery. One of the markers in the small cemetery belongs to a William Washington Gifford, b 18 Mar 1822, d 18 Apr 1902 and his wife Canarissa, b 3 Oct 1829 (no death date- may not have been buried with him?). There are other stones there too. If you would like a photo of this stone, I'll try to include it in this post. If it doesn't work, send me a message here on ancestry. There are more stones, if I come across images of them, I'll upload them as well.
Happy hunting.
-andrew

Hi Noelle,

I agree with Paul GIFFORD. Your Jonathan was very likely a part of the NJ family.

It is true that the given name Abner does not appear in the NJ GIFFORD family, but that name could have come from Abner's mother's family or one of his grandmother's families.

Steve

Jonathan Gifford, according to both 1850 and 1860 censuses, was born in New Jersey. His presumed son Anthony A. reported in 1880 that his father was born in NJ. His presumed son Jesse reported in 1880 and 1900 that he was born in Pennsylvania. So I'd say in all likelihood Jonathan was born in NJ.

There was an Abner Browner Gifford, originally born Abner Gifford (1784-1847), of Dartmouth, MA, but that family is well known and traced.

Your Jonathan Gifford must have been part of the NJ Giffords, probably born somewhere in South Jersey.

Hi Steve:

I read through your work on the NJ Giffords. I was looking for another occurence of "Abner", possibly indicating a relative, but did not find any reference. It seems that names are kept in the families and "Abner B." appears often in the Mass. branches, rather than the NJ. As Abner may have been a ship captain and/or merchant, I guess the family may have moved to Philadelphia for that purpose. Haven't given up on the NJ line, just following the rabbit trails.... As Jonathan occurs in both lines, what do you think about my "Abner" theory? I do have one indication of his having been born in PA (census for son) but haven't found that to be all that reliable. Thanks.

I was wondering if anyone had information regarding a branch of the Gifford family residing in Bristol in the nineteenth-century?

My maternal great grandmother was Alice Esther Beatrice Gifford who who was born in Bristol in 1910. Her father was Frederick Gifford, a miner born in St Paul's Bristol in c.1879. Her mother was Mary Jane, also born in Bristol, in c. 1881. Frederick and Mary had three other children.

I would like to know more about Frederick and Mary particularly details of their ancestors. Have they appeared in anyone else family tree?

(Thank you in advance!)

William and Catherine Taylor Gifford had two sons (and 3 daughters). I come from the son, Benjamin and surmise you come from his brother, Jonathan who married Hannah Jennings. If I am correct, I have nothing on Jonathan born 19 July,1778 in Little Egg Harbor Twp., NJ. I would be most happy to have info on this part of the tree. If you are interested I can give you the info from Benjamin down to my husband who is a Gifford. Email is snhgiff@verizon.net.

Hence I found you. I can provide you with some information on my Great Grandfathers family who moved to Saskatchewan, Canada in 1906, if you're interested in it.

Hi Mary,

I am back on the Woosters and am currently on Mack Gifford. On the 1930 federal census, they were in Maountain, McCurtain, Oklahoma and had six children: Margaret W. "Willie", Josephine "Jewell", Velma Lee, Marvin E., Lorraine E. and Melvin E. Both of the sons were in World War II.
It appears that Mack Gifford died sometime between the 1930 federal census and October 8, 1934 when Inez married Oscar Worthy. He died before the 1940 federal census when she was living as a widow with her two sons. She later married on July 22, 1949 to Colbert W. Overturf who was born August 29, 1889 and died June 21, 1960 in Idabel, McCurtain, Oklahoma. I found her tombstone under Findagrave in Oregon under the name of Inez Gifford Overturf, born January 1895 and died December 18, 1973, Marion, Oregon. I wonder if one of her children might have moved to Oregon, otherwise why was she there so far from Oklahoma.

Cousin Lyla Dove
lylatov@verizon.net

P.S. Remember I'm from the oldest sibling in the Woosters, Wealthy who married Benjamin Craig and your Miles R. Wooster was one of the youngest children.

Thank you Bonny for posting this information.

This Gideon GIFFORD was Gideon6 (Joshua5, Sarah4, Jeremiah3, Robert2, William1 of Sandwich MA). He was born in Dutchess Co NY but moved with some of his brothers to Milton, Chittenden Co, VT. Gideon's request must have been denied because he died in 1807 in Milton. His younger brothers Reuben and Pardon moved to Quebec, but not as early as 1793.

Anyone wanting more information on this family can go to my online report at:

http://swarling.mywebcommunity.org/gifford/joshua000t.htm

Steve Warling

Hi Tom,

Some of the children that you have listed for Gideon are the children of William. I have William Gifford married to Hannah about 1675 and Lydia Hatch in 1711. I only have 4 children for both marriages.

Gideon Gifford died in Rochester, Plymouth County, MA, not in Rochester, NY.

Most of my information is on my website at:
www.angelfire.com/ga4/myhayes_family/

Gideon Gifford married Mehitable Jenny about 1693.

Richard

On 8 Jan 1793, several Americans were listed on a Lower Canada Land Petition requesting land in Quebec. There was Gideon Gifford listed below a Samuel Dean. Below Gideon Gifford was John Dean, William Dean, Isaac Dean and Samuel Dean Jr. To purchase land, he had to be at least 21 so his year of birth was 1772 or earlier. I am not sure which Gideon Gifford this was. Many of the individuals such as Gaius Dean were denied. Gaius Dean did another request for land while living in Haldimand Twp Ontario in 1798 and was granted land in Ontario. My main research is the Dean family but I thought that this might be of interest.

Thanks for that information. That seems a reasonable assumption I suppose. Maybe it explains part of the result of my DNA tribes test. Also, I'm awaiting the AncestryDOTcom DNA test. Digging around for the answers is at least half the fun.
Tim

A number of people have tried, but so far nobody has been able to determine the parents of Lewis GIFFORD. We do know from DNA testing that he was not part of the large Tennessee GIFFORD family (at least not biologically). That makes me think that he probably was adopted or illegitimate.

I am great grandson of Francis Ann Gifford (She was known as Fannie, I believe.) Her father was Lewis Gifford. I do not have the name of his parents and don't seem to be able to find the exact connection. Hope someone will share if it's found. Thanks.

You are correct that Joan and Barbara's sons would not work for the DNA testing. Too bad that your family had so few males. Neither John P. or James L. had any brothers. Charles S. had a brother Lemuel but he never married.

There is hope, however. Jonathan GIFFORD had 2 or 3 other sons besides Abner according to census records. Maybe someday we will find one of them and be able to trace his male descendants to the present day.

On the same page in the 1860 census as Jonathan GIFFORD was a Charles GIFFORD age 5 and a George GIFFORD age 3. They were living with George ROADS age 39 and Mary ROADS age 35. I traced Charles H. GIFFORD to Wilmington DE, where he died on 21 Aug 1915. His death certificate on FamilySearch says that he was born 23 Feb 1855 and that his father was Johnathan GIFFORD born in NJ. George J. GIFFORD died 7 Jul 1883 in Philadelphia in the same ward (23) where Jonathan lived. His death certificate is also on FamilySearch.

So it looks like Jonathan born about 1781 had a son Jonathan who had Charles H. and George J. but Jonathan Jr died shortly after George was born.

According to the census records, Charles H. had a son George A. born Jun 1883 and a son Willard S. born Dec 1889. George A. married but did not have any children. Willard S. married but only had a daughter Doris.

According to his widow's 1900 census record, George J. only had one child, a daughter named Sadie.

Not enough males in this family!

There was a John GIFFORD born about 1821 living in 1860 in the same precinct in Philadelphia as Jonathan. In 1850 this John was living in Dublin Township, which is near Byberry Township. This John could be a son of Jonathan, but the 1880 census lists John's father as being born in Wales. Also, brothers named John and Jonathan would be unusual.

Steve

It seems I am getting closer! Thank you for your response. John Peter, or Jack, was my grandfather and he dies in the 1980's. Unfortunately, to the best of my knowledge, his only children were two girls, Joan and Barbara. The girls then had sons, but am not sure that this would apply in terms of DNA analysis.

I appreciate any help you can give.
Noelle

Hello distant cousin Noelle,

I too am descended from the New Jersey GIFFORDs.

Because of his given name, Jonathan GIFFORD was very likely a grandson of William GIFFORD of Little Egg Harbor NJ. William named a son Jonathan. William of Little Egg Harbor was William4 (William3, Annaniah2, William1 of Sandwich MA died 1687).

There is a way to prove that Abner GIFFORD was descended from William GIFFORD of Little Egg Harbor. It involves testing the Y-chromosome of a direct male GIFFORD descendant of Abner. I noticed from the census records that Abner's son Charles S. had a son James L. born about 1882 and that James L. had a son John P. "Jack" born about 1909.

Do you know if Jack had any sons? If so, they or one of their sons could be tested.

I look forward to working with you to solve this mystery.

Steve Warling

Thanks for the good information. I will follow those leads. I found the Abner/Ann information from son Charles' death certificate. (Charles was only 3 when his father died and the family was together less than 10 years -- between censuses.) Abner died in Philadelphia, probably the 1849 death you noted.
I found the Jonathan/Elizabeth, as parents of Abner, on Abner/Ann's marriage record from St Michaels Evangelical Lutheran church in Germantown c.1840. (http://www.pa-roots.org/data/read.php?661,358755)

I have looked at the Gifford lines from Mass., but have yet to find the link to my family. The Abner B. in Mass. appears to have stayed busy in Mass., and not moved to PA., so it is possible that we are from the NJ line and just named in favor of a relative in Mass.

Appreciate your taking the time.

Noelle
