Hi all,

I'm trying to do some research after my mother who passed away about a month ago. She had done some work on it years ago and was in contact with a number of US Gilboys down through the years.

I can go back as far as my Great Grandfather Pat Gilboy who married Bridget keane and they lived in Ballaghmuck outside of Crossmolina town in North Mayo.

There were about 4 or 5 other Gilboy families in Mayo around 1911 but trying to find the links between them is proving difficult.

Tom Gilboy

just came across your reply to my long-ago request for info re: Michael Gilboy.

Yes, that would seem to be the same family of Stantons. We recently read the census for 1900, which lists Thomas as age 13. The only children we knew about were Thomas, Wilfred and Pauline. Thomas was my grandfather. I wonder what happened to the rest of the kids?
As for Bridget Stanton, all I know is that she died before I was born, supposedly from choking on food. Does this match your records?

our family are from ulster after the defeat of red o'donnel earl of ulster they moved en-mass from their anceatral home in county down over to the west coast, thus depopulating ulster. Consequently protestant planters settled their land.My family are catholics who settled in England probably because of the famine. are your family catholic? how did they arrive in the states. when i was in New York I want to ellis island but could not find any gilboys who were processed there. I had assumed all the gilboys in USA were protestant, as they arrived before 1860.

Michael Gilboy of Scranton, Pa.

I am trying to find more information about my great-grandfather, Michael Gilboy. All we know is that he came to New York, from Liverpool, and worked on the Brooklyn Bridge, which dates between 1868 and 1883. After this, he moved to Scranton, Pa., worked in the coal mines, lost an eye in a mine accident, and married a woman whose last name was Stanton. He was the father of Thomas Gilboy, also of Scranton. Would appreciate any further information . Thanks

Hi,
Glad to see the Gilboy name lives on far and wide. My father was born in Mayo, Ireland and there are many stories of the vast emmigration of family members to the US.
Alas the trend continued for generations, though mainly to the UK. Heartening to note that many are now returning with the rise of the celtic tiger!

James,I corrosponded with your father before he died. You are from the line of Michael Gilboy and my Gr.grandfather was his brother William, who served in the civil war.My father Willard was born above the tavern in Port Washington next to Smith Brothers which was owned by my grandfather Robert until prohibition when he sold out and moved to Milwaukee. At the turn of the century he owned a tavern in Plymouth which is still operating.I have a postcard of the 1908 Parnell White Sox showing Michaels sons Bert and Thomas Gilboy.Good luck in your search.
