Just seen your message. I was looking for Eaton Place where some Giles ancestors of mine lived according to the 1911 census. I cannot see a connection with mine, who came from Baldhu near Truro in Cornwall. My great aunt, Annie Louisa Giles (1872) lived there with her husband Alan Mills c. 1871 and two daughters, Eileen c, 1894 and Marion 1895. They had four boarders so it was probably not a small house (?) The Giles connection may just be a coincidence of course.

Hi, Keith,

Do you have any documentation that Thomas Robert Giles married to Christa Shaw is the same Thomas Giles, son of Wm Branch Giles, married to Nancy Lee? I have tried to find information about this, including contacting the Amelia Historical Committee in VA. They say that Thomas Giles (son of Wm Branch Giles) died in Richmond in 1880 and they have no record of him being in Monroe Co, TN in 1842. Any conclusive information you may have would be very helpful and appreciated.

Hi,
I may not be much help but jas75, Jim Sissel may be. I know that the preacher who took a group of church members from SC to Preble Ohio and then to Warren Co., ILL was Rev Porter and several parishoners named their children in his honor. It could be one of those Giles descended from either James or John Giles sons of Capt.James H. Giles and Susanna Patterson. Does any of this sound familiar? I am descended from one of their brothers Andrew of Abbeville, SC.
If I can help further please contact me at peppersmom@wctel.net.
Regards, Carolyn

Hi Sasha,

Thank you for your comprehensive reply. I am a descendent of Thomas Gilham and Richard Higgins, and so also have links to Bailey, Ransley and other gang members, albeit less directly. I don't have a great deal of information on Charles Giles but will post what I have on my site at some stage - hopefully soon. I was going to send you what I have already but my notes are pretty scrappy so if you don't hear from me again in the next few weeks feel free to chase me!

Cheers, Lynne

Hi Sasha, I'm interested in Charles Giles the smuggler and his family. I've published information about the Aldington gang on my website (http://web.me.com/lynne_paul/Lynnes_Site/Aldington_Gang.html) but would really like to untangle the many family connections. Do you have information about John Giles (b 1768) who married Anne Bailey (1770-1853). Appreciate any information you're willing to share. Regards, Lynne

New to the ancestry.com site and saw your message of several years ago. William Leese Giles is my great grandfather and his son Arthur is my grandfather. My father Richard was born in Cummington to Arthur and Ruth (Stevens) Giles (as was Richard's sister Winifred) and I have a brother William and a sister Mary. My daughter has a good long history of the Giles family tree if you are still interested. We have hundreds of William Leese's sermons written in his own hand with notations as to dates and places preached.

Bob Giles

There were 2 Giles families in the Tellico/Ballplay/Cane Creek areas of Monroe Co. TN. Mine was of Thomas Robert Giles b. abt 1795 Rutherford Co. NC. He was the son of Jeremiah Giles and migrated to Monroe Co. TN abt 1834 from Spartanburg Co. NC. Holloway Giles ended up near where my Thomas lived in just about the same year. We thought they had to be related even tho both families denied it. We have done Y37DNA test on Thomas & Holloway Giles male descendants & they are not related. Blessed Be, Jo Ann Giles

Ruth. I am john luker. My grandfather was Raymond luker. I think he may have been married to a lillian. I know this doesn't match up to tour blog exactly but can you tell if your family has lukers in it, who they are, and where they are from. You can contact me at 9126606603, johnnyluker@yahoo.com or johnny.luker@gulfstream.com.
Hi Lynne,

I see from your site that you have a keen interest in the Aldington Gang. You were related to Thomas Gilham yes?

My information on John Giles is that he died in 1833 and that his marriage to Ann Bailey was his second marriage. I haven't been able to independently verify the details I have on this him and it was based on information I got from other family trees on ancestry.com. Other than dates and details of other members of the family though I don't have a lot by way of stories and details of their life. Did you have a particular interest in certain type of info?

I have a bit more on Charles Giles. His wife and three eldest girls were also on board the Harmony in 1829. I found it interesting from your site that other Aldington Gang families were on that ship too. She was Mary Chapman and thier girls were Sarah (9 yo), Jane (6 yo) and Anne (4 yo) when they travelled to VDL. The Harmony was a female convict ship so most passengers aboard were not there of their free will. It was a 123 day voyage too! Can't have been easy. The eldest girl Sarah was my GGG grandmother. See http://www.convictcentral.com/ and follow the convict ship link for list details about the Harmony voyage and the Governor Ready voyage too.

Charles Giles received his conditional pardon in 1837 and full pardon in 1842. It was common for convicts to be assigned to their free spouses at that time so you'd often have a situation where a husband was his wife's servant and she the master. They'd even take their husband to the magistrates to have them flogged! I'd like to prove that one in Charles Giles case - I do know Mary Giles was assigned a convict in 1833 but haven't proved it was him yet.

Some resources I have found handy online are the Archives Office of Tasmania that have photographed pages from the convict records books. All the Gov. Ready convicts were there I believe. This link will take you to their searchable index http://www.archives.tas.gov.au/nameindexes

I also found an interesting book archived online written in 1923 about the Aldington Gang and their trial in London. Follow this link http://www.archive.org/details/smugglerspicture02teiguoft. You can view/download the book as a PDF and search within it. Has some illustrations too.

Also the National Library of Australia has a searchable database of early Australian newspaper records http://ndpbeta.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/home

Hope this has provided you some new information or leads. If you have any other tidbits on Charles Giles please let me know.

Regards,
Sasha.
Shirley,

I haven't got any connections to a Joseph Giles yet but will let you know if I have a connection. The Charles Giles who I'm related to was transported to Tasmania in 1827 for smuggling. He was one of the Aldington Gang from that time. If you find any connection to Aldington, Bilsington or Ashford in Kent let me know.

Regards,
Sasha.
