I'm working on a lead that says that John Armour's wife, Susannah, was a Gilkerson. She would have been born in 1744, supposedly in Pennsylvania. Were there any Gilkerson's in Pennsylvania during that time?

Hello Joy,

I have William Golkerson as John & James' father:

born 1720 in Scotland
Died in Fleming County, Virginia which is now Kentucky.

The Gilkerson/Gilkison/Gilchrist family traces their ancestral roots back to Dalriadian origin, and first appeared in ancient medieval records in Angus
GILKERSON Shield: Blue with a gold sun, two crosses and a star in base. GILKERSON Crest: A rising sun.
GILKERSON motto: "I hope to speed"

from Coffinberry genealogy

p. 31 - "In the beginning the Gilkisons migrated from Scotland to the north of Ireland. From there two brothers came to America and landed at North Carolina. One of these brothers afterwards settled in Virginia and one in Greenup County, Kentucky. He had three sons named Jonathon, James, John." p. 57 - "T. Mortimer Gilkison sends in the following data:
My great-grandfather was born in Scotland (am quite sure his name was William) and came to America as an orphan at about fifteen years of age and settled in Virginia.

This is what little I have on James. Does it match yours?
died Scioto County, Ohio.
Married Elizabeth Currens 9 Sept. 1783 in Greenbriar County, Va.

Regards,
Susan

Hi...I replied to another one of your messages as well. I am still looking for info as well. It seems like Garlin Perry Gilkerson is a dead end. I am currently doing research as well through the Gilcrest site to see if anyone there has any info. There are so many different spellings and name changes it makes my head spin. Have you had any more luck? We must keep in touch. If I find out anything I will let you know.....
Thanks!

Re: Thomas Gilkerson - Augusta Co.,VA (1860)

Rick,

I have learned quite a lot since I wrote that query back a few years ago. My gg-grandfather, Thomas E. Gilkerson was born Oct-09-1834 and died May-6-1900 in Churchville, VA. His father was Hugh B. Gilkerson born Oct-1800 in Augusta Co and died May-23-1881 in Elk Run, Va. His mother was Matilda Hogshead born Sep-1806 in Augusta Co. and died June-10-1898 in Churchville, VA. Hugh Gilkerson's father was Francis Gilkerson.

Thru my research most of the Gilkerson family in Augusta County can trace its roots back to Archibald Gilkerson who came to Augusta County sometime before 1767 from PA. There more than likely will be a connection between our two families but I am not sure how far back it will be before they connect. I look forward to hearing more about your Gilkerson family and how we are connected.

If anyone out there has the History of Barnet, Vermont book (Frederic Palmer Wells, 1923), I could use some help figuring out who is who.

On page 443, it says that William Gilkerson married Agnes Somers, dau of Bartholomew Somers.

On page 615 though, Agnes is named as a daughter of Robert Somers, and sibling to Bartholomew, Robert, Jane, Jennette and Marion.

Does anyone know which is correct?

thanks, beth
