Yes the Gilkey's arrived in Maine at what is now Waldo County, Gilkey's Harbor, Maine. The sons started moving west thru Mass, Vt, Penn, coming to what would be Michigan in 1799. Was called Indian Territory back then. There are Gilkey's from Atlantic to Pacific, and Canada, to Gulf of Mexico.

I found a John L. Gilkey b. ca 1863 in Vigo, Pierson County, Indiana. It lists his father as John Gilkey b. Vermont, his mother as Jane b. in Ohio.

The 1880 census has John L. Gilkey b. ca. 1863 in Indiana, in Vigo, Pierson Co. Indiana. His father was John Gilkey b. 1831 in Ohio. His mother was Jane, b. Ohio. John Gilkey's father was born in Vermont, his mother in Ohio. Jane's parents were born in Ohio. I think some of the Maine Gilkeys did go to Vermont. The Yarmouth Gilkeys were descended mainly from John Gilkey of Islesboro, Maine.

Your Sarah Gilkey and James Peeler settled in the Lavaca County area of Hallettsville, TX where there are several court documents concerning the ownership of a slave named Nelson that belonged to Sarah's sister Rebecca/Rebecka who had died and their brother Alfred Gilkey, from whom I descend, was trying to settle his sister Rebecca's estate. It's a long story, but very interesting. I am assuming since James Peeler's will is on file in Lavaca County, that he died and is buried there.

GILKEYS IN MASSACHUSETTS

I'm trying to trace the immigraton of my Gilkey family to MA.There appear to have been 3 Gilkey families in MA in the early 1700s. John, William and James.

According to MA sources I have been able to confirm so far:

John and Mary Gilkey had a son, Charles, born in Braintree 9/21/1724. (Listed as Kilkey)
John Gilkey died in Braintree in 1727.
Have found no further records in this family. Could be that Mary remarried and relocated.

William Gilkey married Hannah Hayden in Braintree on 7/9/1731. I have found six children for them.
William: Born in Weymouth on 3/10/1733
Mary: Born in Braintree on 7/10/1736
Ruth: Born in Braintree on 10/8/1738
Rebecca: Born in Braintree on 3/22/1739
Charles: Born in Hopkinton on 10/23/1746
John: Born in Hopkinton on 10/16/1748
The 7 year gap between Rebecca and Charles makes me think that I’ve missed some. This family settled in Leicester.

James Gilkey married Grace Randall on 2/9/1736 in Scituate. I have found six children for them all born in Scituate.
Rachel: Born 5/24/1741
James: Born 7/24/1743 (must have died young as there is another James)
John: Born 6/16/1745
Lucresia: Born 1/24/1747
James: Born 9/9/1750
Jacob: Born 6/21/1752
Grace died on 8/16/1759 in Scituate. I have found nothing more on James so I think that he most likely relocated after her death – probably of Maine. Son John is my ancestor and I know that he went to Islesboro Maine and his daughter, Matilda, my gggg-grandmother married there.

All of my info is sourced. My question is “Are these three men Related?” Haven’t found any immigration records yet but hope to tie them together. The names of the children aren’t unique but do seem to be consistent. I’m hoping that somebody else has climbed over this brick wall.
Actually, there are two distinct groups of Gilkeys in Ky.
One came from Pa. which appears to be kin to the Ohio group and the other group came from the Carolinas into Ky.

Really dont know anything of the kinship of these two groups.

As to the spelling of the name, Guilkey-Gilkey and all the variations ie: Gilke, Gilkie, Gilkey, Guilkey, Guilikey, Gilky, etc, all are the same name, just spelled as phonetics as the writer heard them.

If you have the book, "The Gilkeys" by George Gilkey, pub. 1950, you can get a lot of info from it.

it seems like alot of people do not realise that there were more than one Charles gilkey which came here about the same time, the decendents in ky.are of a charles from penn. who moved to ky and died there. the other is the father of the gilkeys in southern ohio, who also died in ohio. some ky gilkeys may have moved to ohio, but most of them were already there. our charles also came from penn. go to "the gilkey family tree of ohio" to view birth and death records and place where they are buried. I am of this line of the family. thanks

Sylvina Gilkey/Thomas Morton

I was wondering if anyone had any information on the children of the above referenced couple. I have a Rebecca Morton who is the mother of my great great grandmother. She was born in Maine and married George Washington Parks in Maine. They later left Maine and settled in Licking County, Ohio.

I read on the internet that the marriage date for Thomas Morton and Sylvina Gilkey was November 29, 1792 in Maine (probably Hancock County). My Rebecca Morton was born about June 20, 1800 in Maine. I have noticed a census in 1810 for Thomas Morton in Hancock County, Maine and they have a daughter that would fit the time frame of the birth of my Rebecca Morton.

According to cemetery records from the Cedar Hill Cemetery in Newark, Licking County, Ohio, Rebecca died January 11, 1858 and her parents are listed as Thomas Morton and Salina ?(no maiden name listed). I am wondering if Salina is actually Sylvina Gilkey since Sylvina could easily be mistaken for Salina.

Something interesting I'd like to point out is that my gg grandmother who is Rebecca Morton's daughter was named Mary Matilda. Sylvina Gilkey has two sisters named Mary and Matilda.

I recently received an obituary for one of the children of Rebecca Morton and George Washington Parks and it says that he was born in Hancock County, Maine... The apparent stoming grounds of the subjects of this post. So, as you can see, I have lots of circumstancial evidence, but nothing conclusive as of yet. Is there anyone out there who has heard of this couple and maybe has documents listing their children? T I know this is a long shot, but I gotta try!

Thank you for reading my post.

Interested in Kentucky Gilkey history

I live outside of Detroit. My best friend of over 40 years has a mother (now deceased) who was a Gilkey from Kentucky. The Mother was born and raised in Kentucky. I don't know the city or county. She was born around 1928 and had a twin sister.
I always knew them as Christine and Madge. Both came to Detroit in the 40's, married, and raised their families here.
They had other siblings, one sister was called Bea. There were some brothers, I think one was called Fairy or Ferry and the other was Ester or Estel. Although most of the siblings relocated to the Detroit area, a couple of them remained in Kentucky, married, and raised their children. I'd like to get as much information as I can and then surprise my friend.

I found some Gilkey families with slaves in Montgomery County, Kentucky but have not seen any names listed, the slave census only lists ages. This Gilky family moved to Clinton County, Ohio after the civil War.
I believe William has a brother Henry born about 1850 also in Kentucky and also in Clinton County, Ohio by 1870.

William Gilkey has known children
Amanda abt 1866
Hattie abt. 1868
John Henry abt 1870
Arthur abt 1878

Thanks
Lukas
