I know pretty much about the family of John & Ruth Gill.
The only Gill children would be from the oldest son Charles
(Chuck) Gill and his first wife and second wife, Maryln,
and a third wife which I never met or know anything about.
Would need more from you to know if you are related.
Dick.

GILL family of London and Woolwich, Kent

I’ve managed to make some inroads into my husband’s GILL ancestry. We knew that his 3G Grandmother, Isabella GILL, was the daughter of John GILL, Carpenter, and that she had been born circa 1820 in Woolwich, Kent. I haven’t yet found her baptism, but I’m 100% convinced she was the daughter of John GILL and Sarah YEATMAN, who were married on 11 Sep 1803 at St Mary Lewisham (an entry also for St Peter Lee).

The GILL data I have at present is:

Joshua GILL, presumed born circa 1750; died 1792, Woolwich, Kent; buried 15 Nov 1792, St Mary Magdalene Woolwich; married Isabella BATTYSON, 29 Dec 1777, St Martin in the Fields, Westminster, London. They had at least five children:

1.	Mary Ann GILL, born 4 Jan 1779, Woolwich; bap 31 Jan 1779, St Mary Magdalene Woolwich; died 1797, Woolwich.

2.	Jane GILL, born 26 Jul 1780, Woolwich; bap 11 Aug 1780, St Mary Magdalene Woolwich; buried 31 Dec 1780, St Mary Magdalene Woolwich.

3.	John GILL, born 11 Apr 1783, Woolwich; bap 8 May 1783, St Mary Magdalene Woolwich; married Sarah YEATMAN (daughter of George and Sarah YEATMAN) on 11 Sep 1803, St Mary Lewisham. Occupation: Carpenter and builder. (John GILL emigrated to New Zealand circa 1838, so some info on what happened to him would be wonderful!). John and Sarah GILL had at least nine children:
a)	Joshua Yateman GILL, born 26 Jun 1804, Woolwich; died Mar Qtr 1858, St Saviours District, London. Occupation: Printer. Married Maria HATTON, 18 Jan 1836, St John the Evangelist, Lambeth.
b)	John GILL, born 10 Feb 1806, Woolwich. Occupation: Plasterer. Married Caroline Cassans (unknown) before 1840.
c)	George GILL, born 9 Feb 1808, Woolwich.
d)	Edward Samuel GILL, born 24 Jan 1810, Woolwich (possibly a Blacksmith, and at Greenwich East District Union Workhouse, Kent in 1851).
e)	Samuel GILL, born 20 Feb 1812, Woolwich; died 1887, St Saviour District, London. Occupation: variously Beer House Keeper, Jeweller and Traveller. Married Julia SMITH, 29 Apr 1838, Saint Anne Soho, Westminster, London. Married widowed sister in law Maria HATTON, 12 Nov 1864, Trinity, Lambeth.
f)	Elizabeth Sarah GILL, born 6 Feb 1814, Woolwich.
g)	Sarah Mary GILL, born 1 Apr 1816, Woolwich.
h)	Isabella Margaret GILL, born 11 Mar 1818, Woolwich; buried 7 Mar 1819, St Mary Magdalene Woolwich.
i)	Isabella GILL, born circa 1820, Woolwich; died 25 Mar 1893, Lambeth, Surrey. Married Charles SHONE, 29 Oct 1849, St Marys, Lambeth.

4.	Betsey/Elizabeth GILL, born 21 Feb 1785, Woolwich; bap 13 Mar 1785, St Mary Magdalene Woolwich; buried 3 Sep 1785, St Mary Magdalene Woolwich.

5. Samuel GILL, born 1 Oct 1786, Woolwich; bap 30 Oct 1786, St Mary Magdalene Woolwich; buried 11 Aug 1850, St Mary Magdalene Woolwich. Occupation: Ship Wright. Married Elizabeth/Betsy HARE, 4 Sep 1813, St Mary Lewisham, Kent. Sanmual and Elizabeth/Betsy GILL had at least seven children:
a) Samuel GILL, born 13 Mar 1815, Woolwich; buried 10 Jun 1886, St Margaret, Plumstead, Kent. Occupation: Master Baker. Married (unknown) before 1841. Married Mary Ann MANYARD, 28 May 1841, St Nicholas Plumstead, Kent.
b) John GILL, born 24 Oct 1816, Woolwich. Occupation: Sawyer. Married Elizabeth (unknown).
c) Mary Ann GILL, born 15 Jan 1819, Woolwich.
d) Elizabeth GILL, born 12 Oct 1821, Woolwich. Married George NARBOROUGH, 1844.
e) Ann GILL, twin, born 13 Nov 1824, Woolwich; buried 2 May 1826, St Mary Magdalene Woolwich.
f) Sarah GILL, twin, born 13 Nov 1824, Woolwich; buried 29 Dec 1825, St Mary Magdalene Woolwich.
g) Charles GILL, born 26 Apr 1827, Woolwich; buried 7 Dec 1896, St Margaret Plumstead. Occupation: Master Carpenter. Married Louisa Victoria INGS, 14 Aug 1848, St Dunstan and All Saints, Stepney, London.

If anyone connects to any of the above, or knows anything about Joshua GILL’s and/or Isabella BATTYSON’s origins, do please let me know!

Best wishes,

Sue

My 3rd great grandmother was Rhoda Gill, b. 1805 who married Wyatt Camden on 29 Nov 1829 in Nelson County, VA. Her parents were Jones Gill and Patience Nunnally who were married in Buckingham Baptist Church, Buckingham, VA on 3 Jul 1793. I am curious if there is a relationship here to your Rhoda Gill? The places, dates and given names are close enough to merit a question.

Dianne. You were most kind with your info. Your info is most accurate and allows easily to straighten out the many on-line Trees that contain errors on these families.
I know you do not need the following info, but some others in the future might come here confused as I was about the father of Joseph Gill d.abt.1783.Chesterfield and need some help. The most widely accessible accurate info on the Gills of Chesterfield/Henrico can be found at
http://sciway3.net/clark/gill/vagill.html
In addition, the Will books of Chesterfield by Weisiger allow confirming the wills of 1749 - 1802 on these families without having to search through the LDS Microfilm for this period.
Sometime in the future I would appreciate your going to RootsWeb and go to Database edclgenealogy1 and see if you have any additional info on the descendants of William E Gill and Martha F Clayton than I have. I know you cannot see the Notes there, but you are most welcome any of it by contacting me directly. I would have contacted you directly per your note, but wanted to leave the other info I noted.

Mary Gill, Co. Galway Ireland c1880-1936

I am looking for any information on my Great Grandmother Mary Gill.

She was born in Co. Galway in 1879 or 1880, possibly in Caltra, but I don't know for sure.

They story goes that she immigrated to the US, and then returned home to marry. She married William Fallon of Lisnagavragh, Four Roads, Co. Roscommon in 1909 or 1910. Apparently her bridesmaid was Margaret Mannion who went on to survive the sinking of the Titanic. Margaret was from Loughanboy, Ahascragh. There are Gills living in the same townland according to the 1911 census, so that could be Mary Gill's actual place of birth.

In the 1911 census she is living in Lisnagavragh with William, and his parents John and Norah Fallon. By 1911 William and Mary have thier first child Edward. They would go on to have Catherine(Kit), Nora, Tom, Theresa (Tess) and my Grandmother Bridget, who married Malachy Mullen.

Also recorded in the 1911 census is that they were being visited by Bridget Gill aged 6, who I assume is a niece.

Thank you for any help.
Emma
The only thing I have on Harriet Gill is her fathers name. But it looks like I might have him mixed up the William Father. I have Harriet's dad as William Gill, Born 1792, Of, Owlerton, West Riding, Yorkshire, died 1874.
If William's mother was Ann BASHFORTH and his dad was William WALKER, how did William, the son, get the name of Bashforth? It should have been Walker, you think?
Do you have a Pedigree Chart you can send of William and Harriet? The 1871 England Census also lists a 9 year old Isabella Gill born in Ashcrombe, Devon, England working as a servant in the household of William and Mary Jane Bickford.

Unless there were two Isabella Gills born in Ashcrombe, Devon, England at about the same time this is probably her

Isabella Gill (1861 - 1928) > looking for ancestry info

I am looking for info on the ancestery of an Isabella Gill.

US Census records place her birth in July 1861 somewhere in England. US Census records also place the birth of her parents somewhere in England.

According to the 1920 US Census she emigrated to America in 1874.

She married Alfred (Alford) Purkiss (Purkis, Purkin) on 10 Mar 1879 in Leelanaw, Michigan, where they lived for the remainder of their lives.

Her date of death (unsourced) is March 1928.

Census records show their children as being: Henry William, Walter A, Rosa Bella, Amos S and Elbert E.

Now here is my problem. I have seen a number of trees which show a Thomas Gill (1831 - 1907) and a Sarah Mortimer (1835 - 1877) as being her parents. But I have found no reocrd showing that is the case. I have found a census record for Thomas and Sarah and family from when Isabells would have been a child [1871 England Census Record], and while a number of children are listed in those records, there is no Isabella listed as being a child of
Thomas and Sarah, which makes me think their identity as Isabella's parents may be incorrect.

Can anyone shed any light on this?

Who are this 1861 Isabella's real parents?

Re: Harriet Gill Bashforth, Yorkshire

After several years, I have got back to the Bashforth family genealogy. Are you still interested in tracing William Bashforth and Harriet Gill?
I have no information on Harriet's ancestry, but William was the son of William Bashforth b. 1792 in Hoylandswaine, died 1874 in Wortley; he married Mary (?surname) born 1789 in Chesterfield.
William's mother was Ann Bashforth, born 1768 in Silkstone. Ann married William Walker in 1802. She was the daughter of William Bashforth b. 1739 in Silkstone and his wife Penelope Beaumont, daughter of Jon Beaumont, in 1764.
William's father was another William, born 1706 in Hoylandswaine, and his wife Sara Turner.
William's parents were John Bashforth, born 1681 in Hoylandswaine and Edith Elliott born 1705.
John's parents were Brian Bashforth, 1660-1727 in Hoylandswaine who married Mary (?surname) 1680, she died 1711.
I would be glad to have information on the women whose surnames are unknown, and on Harriet Gill's ancestry.

Gill Family in Long Island, New York or Connecticut area

I am looking for information about Ermine "Minnie" E. Gill. Her middle name could have been Estelle or Elizabeth. I do not know her maiden name. She was born in 1883 and died in 1929. She married Frederick William Gill and had a daughter named Audrey Estelle Gill. They lived in the Suffolk, Long Island, NY area and may also have spent time in CT.

Minnie's daughter Audrey worked as a teacher in the Edgewood Elementary School in Bristol, CT during the late 1930's. Audrey married Edward Earl Kaller (owner of Kaller Jewelers store in Patchogue) and they had one daughter, Joan Kaller. Audrey passed away when Joan was a small child.

Any info on Minnie or kin would be so greatly appreciated. Email julie_faerie at yahoo dot com.

Hi Mr. Clayton,
Please excuse me if this is a duplicate message; I was sent through this reply process twice.

Joseph Gill (will 1778 Chesterfield Co, probated 1783) was the great-grandfather of William Eldridge Gill. Joseph Gill was the son of Stephen and Martha Gill. Joseph also had an uncle Joseph Gill who had a son Joseph Gill. Some web sites have gotten these Josephs mixed up.

Land transactions places our Joseph Gill on land in Chesterfield Co. at Second branch, and Swift Creek. This is the same land that eventually became part of Pocahontas State Park. This is the park where the Gill cemetery is located. Martha Clayton Gill, Emily Gill and William Eldridge Gill are all buried here.

Will of Stephen Gill 1753 (proven 1755) leaves 600 acres to son Joseph Gill and the other 300 acres of his 900 tract to son Robert. Son James get land where he now lives on White Oak Branch.

Joseph Gill 1778 will (proven 1783) mentions wife Elizabeth, sons Stephen , Benjamin, Joseph and John. Daughters Mary Ferguson, grandson King and Joseph Ferguson. Daughter Elizabeth Gill.

Benjamin Gill will May 1819 (proved June 1819) Wife Elizabeth. Sons Goode Gill & Joseph Gill (Joseph to get plantation Benjamin lives on with 150 acres). Dau Nancy Perdue, dau Sally Johnson, granddaughters. Betsy C. Perdue and Sally G. Perdue

Goode Gill will May 1839 (Proven Oct 1839) Wife Sarah. Daughter Frances S. Clayton. Son William E. Gill. Daughter Mary C. Gill.

Notes on children of Goode Gill:
 Frances S. Gill was wife of William H. Clayton.
 William Eldridge Gill married 1st Emily A. Gill, his 1st cousin and daughter of his uncle and aunt Joseph & Judith Henry Gill. William Eldridge Gill’s 2nd wife was Martha F. Clayton.
 Mary C. Gill married her 1st cousin Benjamin W. Gill, son of Joseph and Judith Henry Gill.

I hope this information is coherent and useful.
Steve. If you or anyone reading this finds hard copy paper evidence of these families it would be wonderful to post what the full info is and where the Sources of the info are.
I know from Joseph Gill's will written 1778 and probated abt Jan 1783 Chesterfield Co that he had 1)a daughter Mary (married to John Ferguson), 2) a son Joseph, 3) a son Benjamin 4) wife Elizabeth and 5) his mother was still alive. Others have said that this Joseph was son of Joseph Gill b.abt.1673/VA and Elizabeth Eppes b.1672.Henrico.VA. Nowhere can I find hardcopy evidence of this other than a Ancestrial file. Another researcher has said that references quoted in Hohelohe, Bethune Research on Ancestry.com do not hold up.
I have no interest in what is posted in internet Trees without Sources to documentary evidence other than IGI or Ancestrial files.

Hi
Have you checked to see if William and Edmund might be brothers or related somehow? Maybe Christopher's father passed and he was raised by a relative possible adopted?
Ruthie

Gill Family Roots

My Gill Family Tree is from Punjab, India. It is believed to originate from Central Asia, possibly from the Province of Gillan in present day Iran. It is believed that Part of the Gill Tribes crossed the Mediterranean to go to Europe and others crossed the Indus River and went to(Old) North India and eventually settled in Punjab. I am interests in finding the relationship between the European Gills and the Punjabi Gills. I am a newcomer to Ancestry.com and am not familiar with the previous books that have been mentioned. I wrote a family history booklet of my Gill, Sidhu, Brar and Toor Ancestry for distribution to my relatives last year.
G. S. Gill
